I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I think Atlanta is safe from this iceberg.

Chris Ween: I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I think Atlanta 99.999% of the world is safe from this iceberg.

FTA: "The ice island, known as iceberg B31"

How long until CNN starts naming icebergs for ratings?

That's about one fifth of a Rhode Island, for the majority of you who don't know how big an Atlanta is. I don't know where the Atlanta municipal boundary is and how much is separately incorporated suburb.

2014-04-22 12:25:18 PM
Yeah, but the iceberg won't make it to October. It'll melt right after the Division Series.

Thanks for doing that conversion - when will CNN get on board with the RI as the international unit of large objects?

I'd rather live on that iceberg than in Atlanta. Throw in the rest of the south too....

If its anything like the Atlanta football team, it'll fumble twice at its own glacier, give up 5 TDs and a special teams gaffe, and choke before it gets halfway to its goal

In the grand scheme of things, Atlanta isn't that big. For a more dramatic effect I would have said it was MORE THAN FOUR TIMES THE SIZE OF MANHATTAN or something. Still not that big, considering the vastness of the ocean and the fact that it will shrink quite a bit out in warmer water.

... At least they aren't the Texans.  Why bother letting the other team's offense score TDs when you could let defenses score TDs.

Atlanta better watch out, then. They're sclewed.

"The iceberg is now well out of Pine Island Bay and will soon join the more general flow in the Southern Ocean, which could be east or west in this region," iceberg researcher Grant Bigg from the University of Sheffield in England said in the NASA statement.

Well that narrows it down...

When did Atlanta become a form of measurement? And is it a measurement of area? Volume? Mass?

Yo momma so fat, she's like 3 Atlantas with a side of Macon.

Once that happens, the researchers worry it will be difficult track the iceberg during the long weeks of darkness that comprise the Antarctic winter.

Can't we put some kind of beacon on it? Strobe lights? Fog horn? We can track sharks but not a giant ice cube?

Just tell North Korea to go do their testing on that, they'll be happy, and the iceberg is no longer a threat if their test work.

Win-win.

That's what you think.  What if Russia picks it up with a giant blimp and drops it on us?  Putin has invaded Georgia before.  He'll do it again.

Do we mean the city of Atlanta or this God forsaken amalgamation of NASCAR T-shirts, Winston Lights, and "In God We Trust" license plate stickers that is colloquially called Atlanta?

The worry that it will be "hard to track" in the dark and therefore be a danger to shipping.  Hmm.  Throw a few GPS transponders and LED strobes on top of it?

come on.... their missiles can't reach the edge of Asia.  No way they can hit this thing UNLESS we towed it up to them.

Atlanta proper sprawls over 5 counties and the officially recognized Metropolitan Area is 8,376 square miles.

We need a better metric, like how many Scotch On the Rocks could you make from the berg.
