For a free-to-play game, it does a fantastic job. Not once have I ever needed to buy anything in order to advance. The higher-tier tanks require some grinding, but they aren't necessary to have a good time.

Just a warning, depending on your speed and how busy the servers are you may wanna open it and find something else to do for a while since it can take a long time to download the various patches. They don't come with the initial download and only start when you open the game. It took a looooooong time for them to download for me, but that was during the first week of release.

I puttered around with World of Planes for a bit, haven't tried out Tanks.

Was disappointed Planes seems to be arcade-style flight with a heavy bent towards mouse-pointing for flight maneuvers, so I sort of lost interest.

Wow. Sounds like I need to re-investigate it. Tried it when it first came out and was less than impressed, but I am willing to give it another try if it has improved.

I got tired of WoT as well as WoWP not too long ago. It's a good F2P game, but it's SO very grindy unless you want to shell out real money.

And Warplanes is totally mousepointy.

meat0918: Is it better, or did it go full Pay to Win?

Depends on when you quit playing.  When they removed the requirement to pay gold (in game real money currency) for better shells last year, it actually leveled the playing field quite a bit.

I paid money for the "pre-order medium pack" 3 years ago when the game came out in the US.  Cost about as much as a normal PC game ($60), and I still have 13000 gold or so left (I've won a few thousand gold here and there).  The premium $$$ tanks are generally not game breaking either.

It will be interesting to see how Gaijin's Warthunder: Ground Forces will compete with Wargaming on this.  It may make it better, it may make people even more likely to pay to win.

Does it still have a following? I used to play years ago but there was hardly anyone online. Also most people would bury themselves, I hate that strategy so much.

The original was the first game I ever played on a computer.

You goin the German route too? I just got my first Level VII tank destroyer (Jagdpanther) a few days ago, that thing is powerful. I'm about halfway toward the first heavy Tiger tank.

The kids and I play it every now and then. Looks like they have tournaments and about 4600 members on the forums. I don't do many online games. Its a neat time-waster.

I did a quick stint in the professional circuit in WoT.  Found out that I wasn't very good after all. It's a very different level of play.

The game itself though is amazingly addictive.  And, if you're a tank buff like me, it's hard to beat the setting.  It's also forgiving for older players and the movements are more cerebral than twitchy in normal play.  Trust me, APM is not a critical factor in WoT.

2014-04-22 02:25:41 PM
War Thunder is a good alternative to World of Warplanes, and they're trying to combine all vehicle types (Ground/Air/Sea) into a single game.  Tanks are the second vehicle type they're working on, currently in Beta.

That being said, both of these are not merely 'free to play' games.  They offer extremely in-depth modeling/damage mechanics to the level where War Thunder has a full 'simulator' mode.  All planes in War Thunder modeled after, and mimic their real-life counterparts, with strengths and weaknesses represented by that particular aircraft.

If a plane had problems with overheating, or an undersized engine, that's mimicked in the game.

Both are games that are 'easy to pick up' but 'difficult to master', with hit-locations being important as you get farther along in the game.

The very definition of a 'pay to win' game.

2014-04-22 02:29:35 PM
Do they have a mode yet with actual respawning? Or is it still all one life only?

Because there's zero fun to be had having to sit out round after round because your dinky tank can't possibly damage anything and dies in one hit.

The first few tiers of tanks really need some work. You see a lot of experienced players in strong tanks like the T18 that give the game a really steep learning curve. I think a skill based match making system would help immensely at low tiers.

Kaeishiwaza: Trust me, APM is not a critical factor in WoT.

The most important thing is making every shot count. Some tanks spend the better part of a minute reloading after a shot.

I was a god at that game. Of course, I didn't have anyone to play it with, so I usually just manned one tank and left the other one to sit. Regardless, I never lost a match!

Best Princess Celestia: The very definition of a 'pay to win' game.

Not at all. Tanks you buy with converted real-world currency aren't in any ways better (and most are worse) than ones bought with in-game money. 'Gold' ammo and consumables can be bought with silver now. Premium time doesn't change how you perform in a match at all. Paying money gets you more convenience, certainly - but doesn't help you win.

I never ran into that issue. The matchmaker always did a pretty good job of matching me up to people on the same level. They've even got maps that are only open to lower tier people. The only time I've been hopelessly out matched. You should be okay during matchmaking up to Tier 4. And pretty much the only people who consistently die are those with zero patience.

Sergeant Grumbles: Do they have a mode yet with actual respawning? Or is it still all one life only?

The whole point of not allowing you to respawn is so you actually think about your moves and strategies. Respawning causes people to not care about what they do and instead just rush out recklessly and die so they can spawn again.

Plus you can immediately exit out (and still get all the rewards) and join another game with a different tank.

I'm guessing you've never actually played it. I have yet to actually need to purchase something in order to be competitive. I've purchased a $7 package simply to throw the devs some money as they've given me hours of enjoyment and still have yet to use it.

Oops meant to finish this sentence.

The only time I've been hopelessly out matched is joining with a friend whose a higher tier vehicle and it goes by the higher rank.

Don't buy it. The extremely limited setups leave few moves or strategies to be tried. You either get it right the first time, or you're dead. It doesn't matter if you can join a new game with a different tank, you'll be stuck with the same limited options. And like some other commenters mentioned, it's extremely punishing early-game.

I just dislike being jerked away from a tank I never get adequate time to feel comfortable in because I died, and there is never any struggle. There is no back and forth, no turning tide of battle, no securing a position and waiting for reinforcements before the enemy counterattacks. No respawn feel more like it limits moves and strategies just because threat mitigation is so final. You take out a tank, you know it's never going to bother you again.

I'm really coming to love Robocraft. It is like someone threw Minecraft, Space Engineers, a knockoff flight sim and a third person shooter into a room filled with alcohol, then sold the retarded offspring that resulted.

My current setup is something my kids are calling "The Battle Chair" It is a chair with jet engines and guns. and it rocks so hard.
