Because if there's an industry on this planet that can take the high road on environmental impact by releasing a smarmy Earth Day ad it's "disposable smart phone" manufacturers.

Last I checked a decent, few years old smart phone was still worth around $200. So who are these people you know that throw their smart phones away?

Good grief. They're both as bad as each other and as bad as every other electronics mutlinational. Wear a green t-shirt for a day won't help, and in fact makes it worse. A t-shirt that will only be worn for a day then thrown away? Recycled? What about not making it in the first place. And a "green leaf accent" doth not a green company make.

*rage*

Still, that was some ad money well spent. I wonder if the Chinese child that wrote it has committed suicide yet?

So you imagine that with the millions of smart phones sold every year that there are millions of people also waiting to use the old ones up? According to Mobile Phone Track there were 121 million phones sold just last year in America.

You're probably right to a limit, especially when you consider other countries that buy up our refuse phones, but there are still tens of millions of phones being made and sold just in the U.S. every year.

Manufacturing electronics at all is an environmentally destructive process and with the "new ever two" mentality of U.S. carriers smartphone churn is a massive problem for the environment, particularly where they're made and the non-recycled materials for them are mined.

There is no way ANY electronics maker should be releasing an Earth Day ad unless it's an apology.

Assuming you're being serious, are you suggesting electronics companies should not be involved with promoting Earth Day? That there is no way their involvement could make the public more aware of the current practices and how they could be improved?

Smarmy? Check.
High Horse? Check.
Fanboi fodder? Check.
Rounded Font? Check.
White Apple Logo? Check.

What we have here is not an ad, but validation for all Apple fanbois that their device is somehow superior yet is worse. Apple's data centers might be solar powered, but the sheer number of iPads, iPods, iPhones has had an environmental impact larger than people can imagine.

Promoting earth day is a good thing. Promoting yourself as being environmentally responsible is like Fark promoting how it supports an alcohol-free lifestyle.

digistil: Assuming you're being serious, are you suggesting electronics companies should not be involved with promoting Earth Day?

That's fine, but Apple isn't promoting Earth Day with that, Apple is promoting Apple. Otherwise, I'm not suggesting anything. I'm expressing a hint of sarcastic amusement at the notion that an electronics maker, of all people, would release a smarmy, self-promotional piece on the back of Earth Day.

Look, I love to play with my electronic gadgets and I've probably committed more than my fair share of "crimes" against nature with the amount of electronic crap I've bought in the last 40 years, so I'm in no way, shape or form anything other than a part of the problem. However, I also didn't release a snotty, self-promotional shot at a competitor by implying my environmental credentials, either. That's my beef: the notion that an electronics manufacturer has the moral high ground to release sarcastic advertisements using an environmental cause as the engine.

It would be one thing if they'd released something along the lines of "hey, you know, don't waste your phone or ipad when you're done with it, it can be recycled or donated blah blah blah". Fine, okay, great. But they didn't. They released a shot at their competitor. That seems rather... cynical... to me.

Not until they have their own payment system locked down. If they add NFC before they're ready to profit from it their drones may exercise free will and use a competitive system.

I had an escalated call from an Iphone user a few days ago.

She wanted to sign up for the ISIS payment system, as American Express recommended it to her and she was pissed that she had to cover her iphone in a case to use it, that the cell phone companies were just trying to charge her more money, and that there ought to be a law.

It took about a half hour of explaining that the payment system recquired NFC and her phone did not have it, and they she yelled at me for 20 minutes on how I needed to send her an iphone with nfc. I explained the only way was to buy the special case.

She could not get it through her head it was an Apple problem.

Haven't you ever upgraded your smart phone when you've gotten a new contract?

Unless they do something very different where you are the AT&T, Apple, Microsoft, etc shop will cough up a hundred bucks or so for your discarded phone as long as it still works. They're not doing that to save you the effort of tossing it in the trash.

I've had similar tales of tech support.  To the point where someone wanted me to get on the phone and have Microsoft issue a change to Windows, he didn't like the File Open dialogue.  An Android user demanded I change iTunes & iPhoto so it would sync to their phone.  Not read it as a USB mass storage and import stuff but full two way sync.

Where ever you go, you will encounter stupid.

iPod Video owner here, still works.  It's on it's 2nd battery pack and 3rd headphone jack but it's the original 60Gb HDD and still works a treat.   Unlike my iPad2 which is showing signs of battery wear... that's going to be "fun" to deal with.

You're way off, or maybe that's just the way the Android ecosystem works. I haven't paid for an iPhone since my first one, because every time I upgrade for pennies-and-tax I turn around and sell my old phone on eBay for $200-350. That's right: I make money upgrading my iPhones. Because yes, there are a lot of people that will pay for a working iPhone.

/Apple sucks butt but I never liked Android and like I said, profiting from upgrades ain't bad

No, see, all of the good things they do are innovative, industry leading ideas. All of the details (chemicals, hazardous materials, workers' rights) are the responsibility of individual factory operators and whenever those things are bad, they're called "rogue" factory operators.

I don't dispute that they're taking trade-ins, but the fact is these makers in combination pumped out 121 million phones last year that were sold. They all had to be assembled, some portion of the materials that weren't from recycles had to be dug out of the ground and some portion of them are going to be broken, lost or otherwise discarded and become waste material.

That ain't going to make Captain Planet's dick hard.

bingethinker: recycling lies from 30 years ago

It is a well documented fact that Steve Jobs was allowed into the Xerox research center in Paolo Alto, most famously known as PARC, and was allowed to see the point and click mouse driven interface which he then became infatuated with. It drove him to create some of the biggest failures for Apple (the Lisa) and successes (the Mac).

I have been inside PARC, I have seen the infamous bean-bag chairs that apparently were crucial to the researchers' creativity and I have seen an Alto which was Xerox's mouse driven "personal" computer (built in 1973 - note that Apple was founded in 1976).

You are the one pushing lies.
