I wouldn't say the whole thing is fake, but their attempts to lay this at Christie's feet is premature, and the "Or he's totally incompetent" is a retarded line directly from the Benghazi play book.

It looks bad either way.  I'll grant you it looks somewhat less bad if he didn't have any knowledge of the plot to close the bridge, but it's not good.

Look, if he ordered the bridge closed, he's a reckless man who thinks nothing of breaking the law to punish someone by risking the lives and damaging the economy of the people who did nothing wrong except live in the jurisdiction of whoever he's exacting revenge on.  That's really bad... and criminal.

If he didn't have any knowledge of the plot to close the bridge then he's a famous micromanager who, for some reason, a)  has literally no idea that his staff are running around breaking the law to "help" him and b) he's such a poor judge of character that he has no idea that people he's known for years would behave in a sketchy manner.  This isn't AS bad... but holy crap those are two really, really poor characteristics for a US president.  They're even deeply troubling for someone who's a governor of a state.

Essentially at this point the Christie campaign is asking you to elect someone who's either a power-abusing, douchebag sociopath or a clueless buffoon who does nothing but assume his staff is behaving.  That's a lovely choice.

I guess I'm naive to assume that he'd be considering a run for president?

Be that as it may, it still would invalidate him as a credible candidate for re-election as governor.  Obviously, however, credibility isn't important in US politics, but maybe it should be.

The investigation isn't even really looking at Christie, anymore. I guess they know they don't have anything on him.

"I know everyone thinks we're on this road to find a smoking gun on Christie. As far as I'm concerned, there's been enough spotlight on excesses in the governor's office," Weinberg said.

The thing is, Christie made this weird dichotomy... either a) he was aware of it, and did nothing to stop it (tacit endorsement) or b) he was unaware of the actions of more than a dozen of his closest, hand-picked staff-members (terrible judgement and management ability)... neither of these is a good thing for someone who wants a promotion.

Here's part of the problem I have with your take on this issue.  You're looking at it like a lawyer.  We don't have an email or a recording of Christie ordering this action.  But look at it like a thinking human being who isn't applying "beyond a reasonable doubt" before believing anything.  Do you think that the staff of any politician at the level of state governor would perform this kind of action...  involving communication and a three person (at least) conspiracy...  without the nod from the man who's gotten them to the positions they currently occupy?

To me, it's unthinkable that Christie didn't have something to do with it.  And it's equally unthinkable that he would have given his go-ahead anything but verbally to only one member of the conspiracy.  Hell, the fact he's been politically smart enough to get to governor suggests that not only did he give his assent verbally, but he probably also did it in person so there wouldn't have been any hope of a circumstantial phone call on a log somewhere.

What would the staff have to gain by going ahead with this closure unless Christie blessed it?  If they were successful, the big boss would never know what they did.  If they got caught, they'd be fired anyway whether Christie went down with them or not.

Scandals like this have always been killers.  Even the dimmest member of society can understand abuse of power... or adultery...  or farking some dude in an airport bathroom.  Trying to get them to understand why someone shouldn't ever be elected based on macroeconomic theory or by analyzing foreign policy hasn't been possible for several decades... if ever.

Even s2s2s2 would admit (I think) that this is an actual scandal.  If you dispute that this is a scandal, you are trying to hard or your brain is lacking oxygen.

The only thing you can argue is how serious it is and how directly culpable Christie is for ordering the lane closures.
