Damn. I was living on water and Ibuprofen since the last article I was forwarded.

2014-04-22 09:28:30 AM
NSA...AIDS?

2014-04-22 10:04:38 AM
They can pry the NSAIDS out of my cold, achy, old hands (also hips and just joints in general).

....aaaand Tylenol (acetaminophen) destroys your liver. Yay!

A doctor friend once told me that if the FDA had to approve aspirin today, they probably wouldn't. Aspirin/tylenol/ advil are the most abused drugs.

Maybe so. But if I don't take them occasionally, the courts may rule in my favor if the pain causes me to kill in order to try and ease it.

That seems unlikely. Was he saying they'd require prescription, perhaps? They're abused because they are easy to get. If Vicodin was available OTC...

Sticking with aspirin.

meat0918: Damn it.

I've also been told by a former army medic that Ibuprofen is one of the few pain medicines that the body develops an immunity to.

If you find some internet info to back that up, post the link.

Ibuprofen has contributed to my stomach issues.  Of course Tylenol destroys your liver so if those are the choices I think I made the correct one.  I'm trying to stick to none of the above now.

It's amazing how often I've had a similar conversation with my relatives and friends who enjoy running. Same could be said for my friends who do crossfit.

"Man my [insert body part here]* hurts. Not looking forward to this run"
"Why skip running for a few days and let your body rest?"
" I'm not just going to stop running. Maybe I'll cut it down by a few miles."
"Look, nothing is chasing you to kill you and you're not training for NYC or Boston. Take a few days off, take some aspirin, watch some TV."*
*two days later**
"Man my [insert body part here] feels better. I wish I had done that weeks ago."

* this part repeats about 3-4 times
**it's never just normal muscle ache either

Maybe not for OTC use, they wouldn't. Salicylic acid has been used since ages ago to treat certain kinds of pain, and "low-dose" aspirin is a great way to manage high BP without taking more serious drugs (and, since high-BP patients are older, less risk of doing long-term damage).

Acetaminophen doesn't seem that bad, as long as you NEVER exceed the recommended dosage even the slightest bit, NEVER drink alcohol within a couple weeks of using it. Right?

And I believe Vic's and other hydrocodones are also paired with tylenol.... Hence the 15/500 or whatever numbers that are on your pill bottles...

I can't get my mom to understand the difference between NSAIDs and pain pills. Like, I'm sure on some level she knows. But any time a doctor wants to give her anything for pain, she refuses. Even if it's just an NSAID. She has something wrong with her back (MAYBE a herniated disc, the doctor did tests, casually told her, then never did anything about it even though it farks up her life daily). Will MAYBE take some Advil for it if it gets so bad she can't get up and down easily.

I keep telling her to call and ask for something a bit stronger, that it's better to take less of a stronger NSAID than keep taking more and more ibuprofen. I had a problem with my knees a few years ago (kneecaps kept slipping out of place and grinding everything in there) and meloxicam was AMAZING. She pretty much refuses.

My whole family is like that with medicine though.

"I'm alright!"
"But you're .. 56 and have never had a cardiac workup .. and you drop and gain 10 lbs of fluid literally overnight, you can't stand up without taking several minutes because your back hurts so bad, and your doctor literally just guessed you were going through menopause even though you still have periods."
"I'm alright!"

Ibuprofen really never seems to do much for me.  Maybe it is because I only take it when I am already in tremendous pain.  So going from a 8 on the pain scale to a 6 doesn't really feel much better.

I stopped taking it.

There are people out there with legit gluton allergies that make them sick. That said, if you're not one of them there is really no good reason to not eat gluton. Gluton free anything is terrible.

Isn't inflammation how your body deals with things? Stop fighting your natural responses to slight injury, and step up your game so the daily toils don't make you wish for pills every day.

I've largely found super smart people to be the worst. They're so used to knowing more then everyone else they trust their own judgement too much.
