Here's a better idea, but still weird: Bacon and maple ice cream.  I've actually had it.  It's very good.  It's like breakfast in a cone.

According to some documentary I saw on the History Channel (before they became round-the-clock Pawn Stars crap network), Dolley Madison's favorite flavor of ice cream was ...

The tomato/cherry doesn't sound very good, but I like the idea of orange/carrot.  Orange is already an accepted ice cream flavor, and carrots have their place in the desert world (carrot cake is the best cake) so the combination should work.

Most dishes are improved (or at least tolerable) with bacon and maple.

Tomato ice cream... maybe. "Vegetable"... nope nope nope.

Pollyanna ice cream in San Francisco was doing this 40 years ago. I used to go there after school all of the time (A. P. Giannini) back when Polly herself was behind the counter. Some of the oddest flavors you'd ever see alongside the staples.

My thoughts exactly. The cream cheese frosting on my (delicious) homemade carrot cake always includes plenty of orange zest. And, when I make glazed carrots, the glaze contains fresh squeezed orange juice. Carrot and orange play nicely together.

Tomato cherry, though? That sounds horrendous.

There's an ice cream shop near me that's run by a nearby farm, and they sometimes do a very good tomato ice cream. They also do a carrot and ginger flavour that surprisingly wasn't that amazing. OK, but could have been better. The one that did amaze me with its awesomeness was coffee and yuzugosho (yuzu and chilli paste, not black pepper). It sounds awful, but it was really good.

IMHO, the only potentially unappealing thing about tomatoes is the acid content. Their flavor can be pretty damn good if they've ripened enough on the vine, so you could probably get a pretty good extract for flavoring desserts. In Japan, they seem to be into savory ice cream flavors. I've tried red and green bean varieties... but they're about as unappealing as they sound. The cherry would add some sweetness, here - or tartness, depending on the type.

Is it just me, or does the picture of the carrot and orange look just a bit suggestive?

The way I sees it, ice cream and bread have very similar ingredients, just in different proportions. And tomatoes go well with bread.
And carrots can disappear into anything and make it sweeter.

Carrots and raisins might work.

Why yes, yes that is fresh corn in that ice cream. One of the Bizarre Foods episodes even had one with flavors running the gamut from "Hm, sounds interesting" to "OH HOLY HELL NO", all served in a hamburger bun.

Vegetable-flavored gelatin? Imitation tomato flavor? *hork*

Sunshine Salad (orange Jello, shredded carrots and canned pineapple) may be the only good thing to come out of that weird trend of gelatin-all-the-things.

And yeah, of course we don't get to try either of them, Japan gets all the interesting food, again.
