How the hell did they get it in the damn truck?

And I have no objection to them killing the shark as it's legal and they're going to eat it, and I don't think makos are endangered, though I'm not sure.

I assume he tied it to the side of the truck and, by the time he got home, stray dogs had picked it clean.

My guess would be that somebody didn't have a fishing license and they lied about catching it from shore, or there are warrants involved. I've NEVER heard of somebody trying to hide a world record, and he certainly seems eager to take credit for it, so something doesn't add up.

NOBODY is going to complain that you caught an 800lb Mako off a beach. If anything it's a public service.

Put it in the truck that it turns out to be not too big for, take it home and sell what you don't eat?

So they trucked the predator home and planned a family feast.

However, this species will not generally attack humans and does not seem to treat them as prey. Most modern attacks involving mako sharks are considered to have been provoked due to harassment or the shark being caught on a fishing line.

And may I add that mako is delicious.

Near Navarre Florida, Mako (and all the humans) are there for the Cobia because it puts up a good fight and it's farking delicious. 800lb sounds huge, but that's only based on "shore" fishing records. Back in 2007 they caught a 1061lb Mako a bit off shore near Navaree... but they caught it in a pretty wonky way with gaffs instead of a guy bringing it in with a fair fight.

The guy with the 800lber either got reeeeeeally lucky, or was running multiple hooks and lines, which may be illegal. Pardon the pun, but the whole thing seems pretty fishy, ESPECIALLY since they're going to eat it. You don't have to worry about PETA types as much as you do about other fishermen being pissed that you killed a fish that big without the intention of eating it.

What was with that headline subby?  It fit fine in the truck, they plan to eat it at a family and friends gathering, saving a good bit of money.  There wasn't anything weirdly Floridian about this article.  Everyone behave responsibly.

IUCN says it moved from "who gives a shiat" to "vulnerable" because of hunting and soup and such. However "vulnerable" just means people are worried, it's not actually endangered. At least not yet.

The article points out he already holds the record.  The other details of the article seem to point to legitimate catch.

I'm guessing it's something like an extended cab or some such junk. A real full sized bed is 8 feet, not like those trucks nowadays that have 4 doors for the brats, and a small bed. I should know. I have a restored 1977 Silverado in my garage. A full size will at least fit a full sheet of plywood in the back, many trucks nowadays will not.

1. You missed an opportunity to say /ducks
2. duct indeed.  Duck tape a pet peeve.  Although there really is a duck tape which is a cheap knockoff of duct tape.  Not sure how they get away with that obvious attempt at name confusion.  Unless I'm wrong and 3M doesn't actually have Duct Tape trademarked.

If I ever owned a truck, it had better fit a sheet of plywood or drywall in the bed, because that's the only reason I'd drive one.

Every year from late July to mid-August I put in a few nights fishing for sharks from the beach down the Cape.

We'll get them about half that size and it's enough to scare the hell out of the tourists who come through strolling the beach after dark.

For the record, before anyone gets on my case, we don't keep them and most times we cut the leader before we get them into water that's too shallow.  We never get them close enough to take pics and we use hooks that will rust out in short order.  I also go overboard with the tackle so they're not exhausted by the time we get them close to the beach.

I remember when the ads bragged that their truck would fit a sheet of plywood BETWEEN the wheel wells, or that THEIR compact truck would fit a sheet of plywood with the bed closed.

Now?  Yeah you're right   Now it is "OUR truck offers all of the luxury benefits of our SUV but there's an external bed pouch where the Sav-A-Lot can forklift that 50lb bag of dogfood because no human could be arsed to lift anything 4' up because we need gigantic ground clearance and 22" chrome wheels for your mall crawler"

Oh yeah?  If I ever owned a truck, it had better fit a whole lot of genetic instability, because I can't see owning a truck unless one also enjoys banging one's own siblings.

That or owning a farm, I guess.  Or plumbing.  Or lawn care, I suppose, but that's another case where the tree don't fork amirite?

What are you blathering about? I don't like to drive trucks, but they're eminently useful things if you have various amounts of large, heavy objects to move around. Since I don't, I prefer not to drive one.

But if you like to bang your siblings in the bed of your pickup, then groove on your bad self.

Is it? I didn't think shark meat was supposed to be very good. Is mako different from "normal" shark meat?
Also, how do you cook it? Fried? Baked? Steamed?
Just curious. In Japan, shark meat is not really eaten, except as fish paste.

Mako is very much like swordfish in taste and texture.  I'm in awe of someone catching something that big off the beach.  You'd have to have a dozen guys to carry it off the beach.
