Eh, we had this in middle school science where we made accelerometers that we can hold in our hand while on a roller coaster.

C'mon, is this really that astounding?

What's remarkable about this experiment is that the balloon's behavior seems completely counterintuitive to what we've been conditioned - with every turn, brake, and press of the gas pedal - to expect of objects in accelerating vehicles.

You mean it travels in the same direction a denser object would?

I remember the arguments so much.. so much derpage.

It is for it's target audience who probably thought God made only some balloons float because Jesus.

Saw a lady lose a dozen balloons out of her van's driver door window and figured it might have something to do with this. Course she lost them one at a time over a 3 mile stretch so maybe she was just of diminished mental facilities.

The balloon thing was a question on one of the tests I took in Fluid Mechanics.

That is the hard way to answer it.  The easy way is to point out that by general relativity, acceleration in a frame of reference (such as a minivan) is equal to placing said frame of reference in an equal gravitational field.

Just don't break out the tensor calculus.

Tried this in graduate school ~25 years ago - didn't work for us but we were using a small sedan. Easy to see why it might work better in a larger and mostly open minivan... cheers

I hate having balloons in the car, it farks with my mind, regardless of which way they move.

OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! THE BALLOON MOVED FORWARD INSTEAD OF BACKWARD! I WAS TOTALLY EXPECTING IT TO GO BACKWARD, BUT IT ENDED UP GOING FORWARD! FORWARD! WOWOWOW! MY JAW DROPPED AND MY EYES BUGGED OUT OF MY HEAD AND KNOCKED MY EYEGLASSES OFF MY FACE! MY NECKTIE ROLLED UP AND DOWN LIKE A PARTY FAVOR AND MY TOUPEE FLAPPED AROUND LIKE A DYING HUMMINGBIRD! WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS?! SOMEONE PLEASE AVERT MY EYEBALLS FROM THIS DEMON BALLOON AFORE I GET THE VAPORS! I AM FLABBERGASTED AND ASTOUNDED AND STUNNED! SURELY I MUST BE DREAMING BECAUSE THIS VIOLATES EVERY KNOWN LAW OF BALLOONS AND MINIVANS!

Dad ain't new to this rodeo because he's been wowing the kids for years with science by doing all of those videos.  Be an interesting parent and neither you nor your children will need drugs.

Farking buoyancy, how does it work?

No. It moves in the opposite direction that your intuitions would suggest. When the van accelerates, the balloon is pushed forward because the denser air around it is moving to the back of the van. The less dense air in the balloon causes the balloon to move forward due to buoyancy.

So, yeah, it's counterintuitive.

But it is already moving in a counter direction since I am used to things falling down not falling up.  So, it only follows that since it moves the opposite direction everything else seems to move...
Oh, I give up. WOW, IS IT MAGIC OR SOMETHING?

Unlike liberals who don't have fathers.  It is just amazing how the progressives get so upset by the site of a family that contains both a mother and father with kids that are well behaved.  This guy that made the video is from Alabama and as someone from the South  myself, to not call someone ma'am/sir that is older then you is a sign of extreme disrespect.
