Have a Galaxy SIII and I hate it.  It is a work phone so I do not get much choice in the matter.

Your blog sucks... A bunch of unqualified nonsense, speculation and iPhone faboyism there.

When your argument is "The S5 isn't selling well because I don't see people using them, and by the way, Verizon is giving them away in a buy one get one free sale... Therefore, the phone is a dud and Samsung is lying about sales," you are officially an idiot.

2014-04-21 09:10:13 AM
Maybe the market is saturated and people don't want to update their phone every time the company redesigns their icons.

2014-04-21 09:16:31 AM
To be fair, Verizon runs BOGOs all the time, so maybe the launch just coincided with a major promo? Verizon may have already had the promo budgeted out. Eating an extra $200 on the after contract price is peanuts compared to what they make over 2 years, especially since they have the bulk of their LTE rollout done, and it is unlikely another big new tech rollout will be required anytime soon outside of updating LTE to faster speeds (and 50 Mbps is way more than most phones can deal with anyway, and most data plans caps are too low to really use that speed anyway).

I'm sorry, Bill Palmer, but Apple still isn't going to sleep with you.

wow, sounds like iphanboi nonsense.  this article seemed to have been incorrect out of the gate: from what i saw, verizon was offering the BOGO on this BEFORE the s5 ever came out.

so... yeah...

The problem with Samsung phones is farking *TouchWiz*. TouchWiz is a nightmare.

Samsung hardware is really nice, though.  Get a Samsung phone and throw CyanogenMod on it, and they're pretty great.

But if you aren't going to do that, buy a Motorola phone. They have a nearly "pure" version Android, and they work great. The hardware isn't as cutting-edge as Samsung's stuff, but since you won't be stuck using TouchWiz, it'll still feel faster.

/farking TouchWiz. Seriously, it's awful./

Plus a lot of the cheap phones these days have dual cores+, 1 gig+ of ram, and GB's of storage, which is plenty for the average user. No point in updating when your current phone can do almost everything the new phones can, not counting some special features like the Moto X, the LG G2, etc have.

I have an Atrix HD. It does all I need it to from phone calls to playing Playstation 1 games with an Xbox 360 controller on my TV. I wouldn't mind an update because some of my emulators would like the extra cpu cycles, but I'm just fine where I am, especially since my phone is on Motorola's list to get KitKat 4.4.2 and that should greatly improve performance (it does on the custom rom side).

2014-04-21 09:45:35 AM
They are? Awesome, because next week the wife and I are getting new phones and I wouldn't mind getting a free S5 for her. I'm guessing it ain't gonna go down like that.

Also I'm thinking we'll be getting HTC One M8's. It's purdy. I've enjoyed my Galaxy S3, but it's time to move on!

Question: Is my only option on Verizon to get a Developers Edition phone if I want a stripped down non-bloated version of Android? I had a Droid Incredible, using a Galaxy S3 currently but will be upgrading this year.  I really wanted a Nexus 6 and go pure google, or even a Google Play Edition phone but from my limited research it appears  none of those work on Verizon.

I have a Galaxy S2 that does what I need it to do.  I don't see much 'wow factor' to make me spend several hundred bucks to get.

I haven't looked in a while, but probably yes, at least it is for Motorola phones; only to have the unlocked bootloader to be able to flash a custom roms. I know you do need the DE for the Moto X and Droid Razr HD & M (there used to be an exploit to unlock the bootloader for the retail versions, but Verizon patched it). You might be able to get a Moto G off contract that works with Verizon as well. Most phones that you get from a major carrier like Verizon will come with additional software and will take longer to get updates for, an unlocked bootloader on a popular phone will fix that right quick. There might also be a way to get retail X's bootloader unlocked from some eBay vendor....been a while since I read that thread on XDA.

I've always been impressed with the Galaxies carried by the IT guys at work.

Pretty sure it's stupid.

I had 3 iPhones, and finally got sick of them. I switched to the Galaxy S4 and haven't looked back.

Author is right about iPhone sales, though. Any way you slice it, they are outselling Android sets. Herd of sheep, etc..

How many IT guys were running a custom rom? My friend had one and I didn't care much for it stock.

Only buy Samsung if you've held it first and it doesn't feel like a cheap piece of crap. Samsung likes to put decent hardware into crap cases.

Motorola has been doing really good lately, especially compared to how they used to be. The Moto X, G or Ultra are all decently made and performing phones, and the RAZR/Atrix HD/M line are getting KitKat real soon as well as having external sd support and hdmi out if those are of any interest to you -- their specs aren't the greatest, but I'm happy with mine until I get something like the One M8 (preferably the M8's specs only made by Motorola...Motorola phones are hard to break...).

I have a Galaxy S3, and it's great for almost anything I want to do (note: I don't give a shiat about fancy graphics in games. I play Backgammon and Plague Inc, so...).

My only real complaint is Samsung's bloaty services chewing up the battery, and even though I keep disabling them they show up again after a reboot.

In 3rd world, and some 1st world, countries, the phone is the computer and the most expensive luxury item, like a car is to some of us.

My problem is, after about a week's use, it started getting really slow and flaky. I wiped it, started over, and again after a week it decided to stop working well. It was fine while it worked.  But I can't just keep wiping the server out.

heh - I got a lumia 520 for around $100, no contract, with my choice of operator.

I really love this phone - WP8 is such a nice breath of fresh air, compared to iOS, and iOSclone jellybean. It integrates nicely with W8, too.

Verizon is running a BOGO with the HTC M8 as well, but my contract isn't up until July.
Owned a Galaxy S1 and now S3 but may switch to the M8.

I'm not sure why sales figures on launch seem so important when many folks are still tied to contracts. May not be you, but it is that way with a lot of folks.

It's tough for people to find an identity these days. If they're not tying it to a consumer item, they're tying it to things they hate and how they are not one of those people that likes the thing they hate.

My Galaxy S3 is the best phone, and one of the best pieces of tech, I've ever had.  I'll gladly take a S5 if they're giving them away.

2014-04-21 10:59:26 AM
I agree that this guy is an idiot.  Just as likely an explanation is Verizon trying to stay the #1 carrier by offering a popular item on sale.  Though f*ck Verizon.

We get decent Sprint coverage in my area, so I went with Republic Wireless' 3G service (on the Sprint network), which is about as fast as Verizon's 4G is here (the only issue is the coverage range).

Republic has you buy the Moto X for $300, no contract, and I pay under $30 a month total for the 3G (under $50 gets you 4G)..  I'll save enough over my old Verizon setup to pay for the phone in about 4 months, and I really like the Moto X.  I might get my wife their Moto G for $170 when her Verizon contract is up.

Phones have reached the plateau that PCs have: one from 1-2 years ago is still good enough.

Like with PCs, once you had enough power and OS to run Outlook, Word, Excel, and Photoshop at the same time without noticing any lag, you don't go looking to get a new computer when the next processor comes out.

Same with phones. You needed a new phone every 10-12 months because the tech, and the applications, changed so fast.

My phone (G S2) runs Facebook, Gmail, and HBOGo just as well as my friends S4. My contract has been up for months, but i have no motivation to get a new handset just yet. Not until there is a new advancement in users applications or in a handset use that requires more powerful hardware.

Agreed. At this point in time, I'm more interested in things like battery power and ergonomic comfort.

It's human nature. Humans like to glom themselves in with other people who look the same, come from the same place, or have the same religion. It's tribalism, baby.

In a world with cultural pluralism, great individual mobility, and fading religion, the tribes have realigned around consumer factions. Fanboi-ish arguing on the internet is better than genocide or inquisitions.

What ever happened to that Motorola phone with two antennas, rugged case, and super battery life that they were creating for developing markets? I still think that there would be a market here for a long-life phone with great reception. Hard to play Angry Birds on, I guess.

My line to people years ago when the "latest and greatest" processors and PC's were coming out was....you've gotten to the point where you can't tell the difference in how fast the card flips when you're playing solitaire.
