I don't really think the Tigers are after a bat at SS they are looking for a good, defensive SS and Alex Gonzales was kinda sucking at that. I don't know if Romine and whatever call up are going to fit the bill either. They might have to drop some money on someone until Iglesias can come back.

To demonstrate the math here...the Tigers traded a competent starter (Doug Fister) for Steve Lombardozzi, traded Lombardozzi for Gonzalez, and then let Gonzalez go.

That's a good job outta you.

Except they didn't trade Fister for Lombardozzi. They traded him for Ray and Krol with Lombardozzi being a throw in.

It's not THAT strange when you consider that he is a shiatty shortstop.

I still find it hard to believe there have only been two Alex Gonzalezes in baseball. It seems like everybody's had a shortstop named Alex Gonzalez, but apparently only 13 teams have.

I liked the Tigers before spring training.  Losing Iglesias and Rondon (set-up man) for the season really hurts.  They don't have great depth in the minors for position players (the Tigers tend to draft arms and trade them for position players).

Why not just put Worth at SS?

2014-04-21 07:56:53 AM
according to the Free Press, Worth is going to play SS along with whoever else they can call up.

I guess he should have reconsidered his street name "A-Gone".

2014-04-21 08:22:28 AM
They've still got Romine on the roster, so I assume he and Worth will split time.  The Mud Hens are HURTING in the infield; with Worth getting his call, Toledo is down to two 1B and two 2B - and Hernan Perez is most likely going to get his call before the All-Star break.

/Toledo falling off the cliff doesn't bother me one bit - anything to make a Bulls-River Bats Governor's Cup more likely

I wish more major league teams could admit they f-d up and drop a starter -- like maybe a fat egotistical Designated Hitter who can't run, can't field, can't hit for power, can't hit for average, swings at garbage like a human windmill, and is essentially physically painful to watch.

Why no, I did not mention Billy Butler, why do you ask?

Has any team ever traded Alex Gonzalez for Alex S. Gonzalez?

//seems like time is running out
//not even sure which one this is
//S, I think

I usually figure they're kept on the roaster because they have  an embarrassingly large salary negotiated 3 years earlier when his stats were pumped up by steroids and the owner wants to see the superstar he is over paying.

He's been playing a long time. As long as he hasn't blown all his money he should be okay.

I was thinking the same thing. If he manages his money well he won't be hurt financially. Everybody should start a savings account as well as a retirement account.

With the power of their offense and the crappiness of their infield, they should go for defense with their SS.

Although Kinsler for Fielder did help their defense quite a bit

Oh, and yes, I know Kinsler is awful at defense, but Fielder is just as bad, if not, worse.

Is he the same alex gonzales as the one who played SS for the Marlins back in the nineites?

On opening day he had 2 hits, including a triple and 2 rbi.

Since then he has gone 3/26 with 0 rbi, 0 XBH, 2 bb and 4 runs scored.  He had a chance to show what he still had left in the tank.  He has nothing left.

he wasn't a starter.  he was the guy filling in for the starter that is hurt.

No team's had both, which is actually kind of remarkable for two players who have played for that many combined teams.

Igor Jakovsky: Is he the same alex gonzales as the one who played SS for the Marlins back in the nineites?

Right, the Alex Gonzalez who was with the Marlins when they beat Alex Gonzalez and the Cubs in 2003.

Dan Duquette?  Hmm.  Though, obviously, he did get the better of this particular trade.

This is why I don't like baseball. How can you have loyalty to a team when the teams aren't loyal to the players and the players aren't loyal to the city?

2014-04-22 08:47:01 AM
It's sad, but unfortunately Alex Gonzalez simply doesn't have the tools to compete at the major league level anymore.
