Jim_Callahan: The same problem caused a recall of nearly 386,000 older Ford Escapes earlier this month. The Escape and Tribute are nearly identical vehicles.

... wait, Mazda owns Ford, or is it the other way around?

Huh.  Apparently ford owned about 1/3 of Mazda (controlling interest) since the mid-90s and manufactured the bulk of US Mazdas until 2008-2010, where Ford divested because the Mazda brand was dragging their main brands down (the 2007 financial crash hit a lot of Asian companies harder than US companies).  I did not know that, guess I learned something today.

// Apparently the divestment was a good move since Mazda damn near disappeared as a brand and had to sell out to Sumitomo, one of the big four Zaibatsu, just to keep the doors open.  Further confirmation that Ford is the only US auto company that knows what the fark it's doing.

Ford ran Mazda into the ground, the same thing GM did with Suzuki.  Ford doesn't know jack shiat what it's doing.

When both Suzuki and Mazda began making cars without American oversight, the quality greatly improved. It was too late for Suzuki here in the US, but Mazda is making a comeback...don't know if they turned it around soon enough, however.

Who would buy a Mazda SUV thinking it would last more than 5 years?

American manufacturing rears its ugly head again.

Early to mid 2000 Mazdas are notorious for rusting.

Anecdotally, I've seen an inordinate number of late 2000s Mazda 3 sedans that are utter rustbuckets.  The cars appear to be otherwise well maintained, but the rust is just astonishing.

My 1996 GM manufactured car with 170,000 miles runs great.  The only rust issues are with the exhaust system (straight pipe just got a small hole for the first time, makes it a teenie louder, i'll replace it soon), which of course after 18 winters with salted roads is expected.

Basically what I'm saying is American made is always crap.

I've always had the impression that Japanese cars rusted more than American ones. It's the drivetrain that I expect to be more reliable on the imports.

No I do not have the memory of this perhaps it was because this did not do the happening and maybe if you would wish for not treating me with such the disrespect of the suggestions of this then we would not exist with the problem of the suspicion. OM MAGOODNESS who are you the DMV of Vehicle Registration? If you do not wish for the vanity plate of me which says MSTD because you believe this is the endorsement of the venereal disease then perhaps you should have the learning that the surname of me is SãÏdthě'døg.
