Even in America, people do turn themselves in without the normal preliminary shootout with the SWAT team. You don't say, "I'm a career criminal, did they put out a warrant for the bank I robbed last week?" You present yourself, ask if they have any warrants, and go from there. Judges like it when you do that.  It shows a level of responsibility that might earn you release on bail.

This. If the police already know enough about you that they've issued a warrant for you under your real name, you're already farked.

Uh, no. Best bet is for you or your attorney talk with the DA/ADA. Then make arrangements to turn yourself in. If you just walk into jail you don't know for sure the extent of charges, bail you might need, or even if they will let you out on bail. A lot of DA's, I've heard, will even reduce charges if you'll present yourself so they can clear their case loads of your possession charge. Er, whatever it might be.

Agreed. This is what lawyers are for. And most lawyers know the DAs well enough to fist bump when they see each other so this shiat gets taken care of pretty efficiently.

/not that I ever had this happen to me
//never. really. why are you looking at me like that?

In the town where I live, the local police station web site urges you to call in to them if you think there might be a warrant out for your arrest.

Just last year, they arrested 5 people at home after they called to find out.

/possible objection due to relevance.
//Some criminals are not too bright.
