As much as I enjoy a good cop bashing thread (& I do), it looks like the kickstand was down & he was parked (in the middle of a turn lane) while texting.

I don't know about TX, but here they specifically exempted the cops from the texting law.

Not only *is* the kickstand down, there are multiple pictures from many cars all showing the bike cop in the same position. Why he's stationary there is a mystery, as we can't tell what's ahead of him, like an accident in the roadway for instance. Physics would easily allow one to text from a motorcycle if you had cruise control to keep the bike moving.

I can ride my bike with no handlebars..

"Under investigation"?

What left is there to investigate? There is proof right there and I'm sure the officer is easily identifiable.

I'm sure charges won't be filed because cops live by their own set of rules.

Yea, he looks like he is stopped.

That being said before all these texting laws, when I was young and dumb I would text from my bike. It isn't that hard, phone in left hand throttle in right.

/just as unsafe as texting while driving
//probably more unsafe for the rider

DNRTFA, but a few years back a buddy's 18 year old son wanted to get into motorcycle racing.  Dad knew he couldn't dissuade him, so he paid for some track lessons from a bike racing pro, at least get the kid off on the right foot.

They spent a few hours at the track, and afterwards my buddy thanked the pro, and said he'd really built up the kid's confidence, especially on the very first lap of the day.

The pro looked quizzical..."We were only doing like 120 on the first lap, how did that help your son?"

Dad said "Because apparently you were uncomfortable, and you took your hands off the bars at 120, and then took your time tucking your shirt in..."

Some time ago, a video was on Fark of a physicist doing a demonstration of a bike wheel remaining vertical despite being supported only on one side of the axel.  In the simplest words, as the wheel spins, it actually helps balancing the whole vehicle.  I had a coworker who took a spring out of his throttle, so the throttle would stay where he put it, then go riding on the highway talking on his phone.  I'm sure he moved up to texting now that phones can text.

I loved that video, and I'm trying to use it to get my kids comfortable with the idea of trusting themselves on a bicycle.  They want to go slow, but slow is more dangerous, when you are trying to stay upright.

Where are these multiple pics from many cars?  Seriously, I only see 2 pics, and the second looks like an enlargement of the first.

The kickstand is up.  Here, look at this pic of another Goldwing:

That's what they look like with the kickstand down.  Note that the kickstand is in front of the footpeg location, while the small drain tube is behind the footpeg location.

Also note that the bike on the kickstand is leaning, while the cop in question is level.

You're mistaking a drain tube for a kickstand, the cop's kickstand is up.

Also, the only other traffic I see is fairly light and in the mirror of the car taking the picture.  I'm not sure why you think traffic in the mirror should also be visible to the side.

Meh - cops should be allowed.  Our laws are already setup such that we accept that cops are better than 'regular' citizens.  There are places where only cops can carry guns, for example.  In towns where it is illegal to use a cell phone or text, cops drive around with a 2-way radio (that requires a hand to operate) and a laptop with a full-keyboard for running plates and license numbers.

I can't quite tell if the kickstand is down (it doesn't look substantial enough), but judging by all the traffic in the rear view mirror, he is on a major highway. If he IS fully stopped but hasn't pulled over to the shoulder or put his lights on, then he is in a very dangerous spot and likely to cause some serious carnage.

Cops in Calif are exempt from all laws regarding cell phone usage while operating a vehicle.
They are also exempt from most gun laws, they have no background check, no waiting period, no 'assault' weapon restrictions, no maximum number purchased in a month, etc.

Cops are, after all, beyond reproach and should be treated much, much better than your average subject, I mean citizen.

I'm aware of what a center stand is.  The center stand is much more substantial, and contacts the ground in two places.  That cop bike is not on the center stand either.

It's a crappy American motorcycle.  I call them Hardley Ablesons.  Crap acceleration, crap handling, and ugly.  Always sounds like something's very very wrong with the engine.  Hardly able to do much of anything but ride in the back of a truck and leak oil.  Made one almost decent bike, had to get the Germans to design the engine.
