I like that the outrage is from today but the actual episode in question was aired last May.

Also, fairly amusing to read an American upset about a Canadian TV show commenting on an English politician.

Or maybe the character in question would have held these views and does not necessarily represent the views of the show's creators.

What, Thomas Harris doesn't actually eat people?  My mind, she is blown.

The main character is into punk rock, so this is my shocked face upon discovering that punk doesn't like conservatives.

2014-04-19 11:55:43 PM
Thatcher sucked.
Being outraged doesn't change that.

2014-04-19 11:59:27 PM
"England was burning. Maggie Thatcher firing on all barrels - at Ireland, the Falklands. She sacked social security, went after the immigrants, the poor, unions."

So... did she?

2014-04-20 12:36:54 AM
I think they mixed up the words "gratuitously" and "accurately."

2014-04-20 12:43:14 AM
Heh, I remember my very proper grandmother dancing up and down when Thatcher got voted out and shouting "the Iron Lady is gone!"

2014-04-20 12:54:44 AM
Huh, I kinda thought that's why the right loved her so much

2014-04-20 01:27:46 AM
Hang on,  are they angry that Maggie went after the unions, the immigrants, the poor, or are they angry that someone remembers it?

2014-04-20 01:32:28 AM

Johnny Texas: Tell me true, tell me why, was Jesus crucified
Is it for this that Daddy died?
Was it for you? Was it me?
Did I watch too much T.V.?
Is that a hint of accusation in your eyes?
If it wasn't for the nips
Being so good at building ships
The yards would still be open on the clyde.
And it can't be much fun for them
Beneath the rising sun
With all their kids committing suicide.
What have we done, Maggie what have we done?
What have we done to England?
Should we shout, should we scream
"What happened to the post war dream?"
Oh Maggie, Maggie what have we done?

All I know about 80s British politics I learned from 80s British rock stars. It's true!

They're angry that someone thinks it was a bad thing.

Thatcher the Milk Snatcher?  That Maggie?

Truly worse than Hitler.

2014-04-20 04:59:38 AM
And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment
And then expect you to say thank you straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
Filled up with dreams then poured down the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame
Well I hope you live long now, I pray the lord your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down

Maggie apparently inspired the Doctor Who episode 'The Happiness Patrol'.  It was a little too over the top for people to get the social commentary, though.

Progress, smogress
Britain is in retrogress
Trip back in time on the moral decliner
Beliefs and values, years in the making
Swept away in a whole generation
Deprivise, vandalise
Cut back and shut down
Poll tax busting
Laid up and let down
She's shiatting on Britain
She's shiatting on Britain

I can do this all day. She shiat on my childhood, as one of "Thatcher's Children".

Seems like you have to have some rather emphatically rose-colored glasses to want to say positive things about Margaret Thatcher.

Who was it who said that for the cost of her funeral, they could buy everyone in Scotland a shovel and deliver her to Satan personally?

"Our feeling was that Margaret Thatcher was far more terrifying than any monster the Doctor had encountered". Sylvester McCoy. The Doctor's calls on the drones to down their tools and revolt was intended as a reference to the miners strike.

Thatcher was worse than "Davros".

"For 3 million you could give everyone in Scotland a shovel, and we could dig a hole so deep we could hand her over to Satan in person (on Margaret Thatcher)"
― Frankie Boyle.

"Some in Westminster have talked about her receiving a state funeral when she dies, which seems a bizarre sort of tribute to someone who believed the state should do as little as possible.

It would be far more appropriate to allow competitive bids from private companies to run the funeral arrangements.

'And we now go over live to Westminster, where state leaders are lining up for Lady Thatcher's funeral sponsored by McDonald's. And there we see the coffin respectfully borne on the shoulders of six part-time burger-flippers dressed in the official Ronald McDonald costume, before the private cremation when the body will be flame-grilled with gherkins and a slice of cheese.'
It's what she would have wanted."

Stop being a farking dumping ground for stupid mouthbreathers, Drew. This kind of shiat goes beyond "making fun of stupid news".

You realize a very large and powerful voting bloc in the USA believes everything they say, right?

This isn't an example of "ignore it and it will go away." These people need to have lights shone on them at every opportunity.

One more question about this. You almost certainly paid more money to comment on this thread to right-wing causes you probably don't agree with than you ever would have with a single mouse click and page view.

So um, why do you do that? Wouldn't it just be easier to read the article instead of whining that it exists? No one is getting any richer or poorer either way, but your righteous non-clickey-ness is pretty easy to mock, so I'm not sure what you gained.

Don't reward their advertisers by loading the link.  Easy as that.

I mean, commenting on your objections to the link on your favorite internet weapon of choice is surely giving more money to the phone/internet/electric companies than actually just clicking on the link would produce.

And you don't have to come in whining about an article you refuse to read. The self-respect alone would be worth the click to me.

Not much, but I don't even want to find out who their advertisers are.  If they're on NewsBusters, or other misinformation sites, they don't deserve for me to learn their names.

Oh trust me, I've facepalmed a thousand times ever since I learned there were righteous internet men out there who refuse to click on certain sites because it apparently shows "support."

I remember when the Christians drummed Monty Python's Life of Brian out of my town on its theatrical run. Those tickets were like $3.00 apiece! (70s money). And yet the Christians got nowhere.

Now I see people refusing to give up their theoretical thousandth of a penny because they can't support such things and I just sigh and laugh.

Good luck at changing the world with that strategy.

Well, mostly I'm against the whole "I'm making up a [insert political slate here] against [insert current movie/TV/music] because it clearly goes against my [insert belief system here] system of most of these websites. They really show the insight of their writers in way the writers do not intend.

I leave Mother Jones out of this though; it's a liberal mag but does do some good work outside of a political brainwash sometimes.

I'm right there with you on that.

But I wasn't really talking about the quality of the writing or whatever, just the way people like him reach their conclusions.
