TuteTibiImperes: So the police dismantle the ramshackle sleeping area of a (seemingly illegal) Chinese immigrant who seems to have some mental health issues (just based on him up and leaving his family to live on the streets of NYC and the fact that they mentioned he has trouble finishing sentences) and they just set him loose to camp out in a McDonalds?

I agree that people shouldn't be living in the bridge, but neither should they be living in fast food restaurants.  There needs to be a bit more followup than 'hey, we threw out your bed' and a pat on the ass.

They took him to a shelter. He promptly left there and states he doesn't like shelters. If he chooses not to avail himself of the services provided (and he's already left his family behind), what more do you think the police should have done?

The One True TheDavid: What law was he breaking that's worth wrecking what little life he'd achieved? Tresspassing? Supposed we do the same with you: step one foot on property you don't have express written permission to be on and we'll take throw all your stuff out and make you stay in a homeless shelter or McDonald's.

Public property, making it his home, trespassing, possible danger to the public/traffic, there's this whole 'logistics' thing most people don't take into consideration.

The One True TheDavid: What should we do with you? I know! How about take your car and license away just in the off chance that it might save a life.

Your hyperbole and strawman are adorable, but let's keep that to a minimum if you want me to take you seriously.

The One True TheDavid: As for "order," in what way was he causing disorder? What tumult or commotion, what civil disturbance? You think maybe drivers were spooked by his snoring?

Did you miss the part about 'discouraging others from trying that'? Or are you willfully ignorant?

Look I get that you have a spoiled 1st Worlder's Conscience and an overabundance of empathy instead of rationality, that's common in most places these days. But do you really think that this guy's story is that unique, and that others won't copy it if the cops had just 'let him be' after it became news?

Again, your lack of forethought and ability are what's cutting you off at the legs here.

"Dear God. What is it like in your funny little brains? It must be so boring."

FTFA: The Chinese immigrant was first taken to Bellevue's homeless shelter after cops raided his bridge loft on Thursday - but he left to spend the night at McDonald's.

It has been many, many moons since I was at the Bellevue Intake Center/Shelter. While it probably has changed, I am sure it has not been much for the better.

Essentially it is (or at least was) an initial intake center for new persons or persons returning to he shelter system. Due to that, you would get the entire range of homeless from people forced into the system to newly released ex-cons who had nowhere else to go. You get booted out in the AM with a bag lunch and cannot return until the early evening. The sleeping areas were like something out of the 1930s with peeling, overpainted walls where the paint was a quarter inch thick from all the over-painting. It is truly as scary as it looks from the outside.

Heck yeah McDs is a better place to go.

Mr_Crink: But he has preemptive rights. That cubby hole in the bridge wasn't being used for anything. He has the right to use it. He is a true patriot fighting for the rights of all Americans. We the people own that bridge, not the government. The police have no jurisdiction over sovereign bridge territory. I hope the militia guys don't hear about this government land grab, or blood will flow in the streets of Manhattan. It's all right there in the Constitution. The Bible told us this was going to happen.

Not sure if serious, but you know, if I owned that land - and by your argument I sort of do in a very small way, I wouldn't just want people camping out on it - at least not with my permission, especially since homeless people don't tend to be the most tidy of folks.

I hear there is a whole African-american community in NYC as well, yet strangely, there is still homeless African Americans..

It's that he doesn't want to stick with a job. He only wants a little bit of space to drink beer and sleep, I could see him finding a benefactor with a closet to loan in exchange for some minor task, like getting Cheese Whiz.

This is a simple liberal or conservative test.

If you think society is marginalizing him and not giving him the tools or chance to succeed and maybe there should be a social government-funded  program to help people in these special cases , you're liberal.

If you think many people go through tough circumstances and those that are self-reliant and willing to work hard and put up with difficult work if necessary is what's needed to get ahead in life, you're conservative.

/If you think both are true that's Integral thinking

picturescrazy: He's not hurting anyone being up there and made himself a decent shelter that's out of everyone's way. Why kick him out?

Well sure, you could let this guy stay, but where do you stop?   There has to be a limit to the number of shanties we allow to be built within a bridge's super structure.

Forty's a good number.  Fifty or more would obviously be ridiculous.
