Article doesn't say which McDonalds, but I hope it's not the one by West 4th St station. What a horrendous place that is.

FTFA:  The home was torn down Thursday by officers, who said it could collapse onto the bike lane.

Riiiiiiiiight.  *wink*

Yeah, seriously. What a shiathole. It's like there's homeless people living in it.

So the police dismantle the ramshackle sleeping area of a (seemingly illegal) Chinese immigrant who seems to have some mental health issues (just based on him up and leaving his family to live on the streets of NYC and the fact that they mentioned he has trouble finishing sentences) and they just set him loose to camp out in a McDonalds?

I agree that people shouldn't be living in the bridge, but neither should they be living in fast food restaurants.  There needs to be a bit more followup than 'hey, we threw out your bed' and a pat on the ass.

i am sure he will be building a new home in a more secretive location.

That's my thought. He's not hurting anyone being up there and made himself a decent shelter that's out of everyone's way. Why kick him out?

He married, had kids and worked as livery van driver until, for reasons he wouldn't discuss, he left them behind and moved to the United States 17 years ago.

I always wonder about that. I remember reading views from people who'd rather hire an illegal immigrant than an ex-con.

They took him to a shelter. He promptly left there and states he doesn't like shelters. If he chooses not to avail himself of the services provided (and he's already left his family behind), what more do you think the police should have done?

Well sure, you could let this guy stay, but where do you stop?   There has to be a limit to the number of shanties we allow to be built within a bridge's super structure.

Forty's a good number.  Fifty or more would obviously be ridiculous.

Can we settle at 45? It's a bit much but gives the bridge some character.

This is a simple liberal or conservative test.

If you think society is marginalizing him and not giving him the tools or chance to succeed and maybe there should be a social government-funded  program to help people in these special cases , you're liberal.

If you think many people go through tough circumstances and those that are self-reliant and willing to work hard and put up with difficult work if necessary is what's needed to get ahead in life, you're conservative.

/If you think both are true that's Integral thinking

Isn't there a whole Chinese-American community in NYC? He's managed to alienate himself from them.

It's that he doesn't want to stick with a job. He only wants a little bit of space to drink beer and sleep, I could see him finding a benefactor with a closet to loan in exchange for some minor task, like getting Cheese Whiz.

He sounds rather bootstrappy for a homeless guy.

But he has preemptive rights. That cubby hole in the bridge wasn't being used for anything. He has the right to use it. He is a true patriot fighting for the rights of all Americans. We the people own that bridge, not the government. The police have no jurisdiction over sovereign bridge territory. I hope the militia guys don't hear about this government land grab, or blood will flow in the streets of Manhattan. It's all right there in the Constitution. The Bible told us this was going to happen.

It's not about bridge trespass at all. I just found out that Donald Trump's second cousin twice removed made a deal with Mayor Bloomburg to develop those bridge cubby holes into luxury studio apartments. It turns out that the squatter is an operative of a Chinese developer who planned to develop the bridge spaces as affordable housing until Trump's distant relative somehow persuaded Bloomburg to turn the contract over to him. Was there a bribe involved? Maybe a kickback promised? Some people might claim that. Turn on the lights and watch the cockroaches scatter! That's how the government operates these days. They keep taking away our freedoms. We the people need to rise up and take our country back.

Not sure if serious, but you know, if I owned that land - and by your argument I sort of do in a very small way, I wouldn't just want people camping out on it - at least not with my permission, especially since homeless people don't tend to be the most tidy of folks.

I'm not sure what this guy's problem is, but I doubt that getting too good at menial jobs is it.  I'd feel sorry for the guy, but some people just can't be, or don't want to be helped.

Homeless shelters are overcrowded, stinking, controlling, pits. It should be no surprise that many people choose the streets.

Have you ever BEEN to a homeless shelter? He's safer on the streets. At least if he found somewhere to hide (which he did) he doesn't have to worry about getting shanked or raped in the middle of the night.

FTFA: The Chinese immigrant was first taken to Bellevue's homeless shelter after cops raided his bridge loft on Thursday - but he left to spend the night at McDonald's.

It has been many, many moons since I was at the Bellevue Intake Center/Shelter. While it probably has changed, I am sure it has not been much for the better.

Essentially it is (or at least was) an initial intake center for new persons or persons returning to he shelter system. Due to that, you would get the entire range of homeless from people forced into the system to newly released ex-cons who had nowhere else to go. You get booted out in the AM with a bag lunch and cannot return until the early evening. The sleeping areas were like something out of the 1930s with peeling, overpainted walls where the paint was a quarter inch thick from all the over-painting. It is truly as scary as it looks from the outside.

Heck yeah McDs is a better place to go.
