The murder, and subsequently this fiasco would be very easily avoidable if we'd just legalized weed back in the 60's.

Our entire society is falling apart around our ears because we spend so much time making an enemy of our own people and punishing them for nothing that a pot farm has enough value to invite armed robbery and subsequently murder.

Hemp is just a weed that happens to have some happy juice in. Dandelion is also a weed. If I grew a whole bunch of dandelions, though, I wouldn't make enough money to pay for a free lunch, let alone get robbed.

The neighbors were probably cheering because they were attacking the correct house / not their house.

doglover: Y'all give criminals too much credit.

All they want is an easy buck. Where's easiest bucks to be had? The black market. Illegal businesses can't into banking.

If, and stop me if I'm going too fast here, you legalize vice; prostitution, drugs, gambling, alcohol; you invite regulation, taxation, and most importantly FINANCIAL SERVICES. When was the last time someone attacked a bee keeper? A farmer? A cheesemonger?

It doesn't happen. What you'll get is everyone keeping their cash in the bank. Credit and debit purchases. Plus good drugs would be legal at the lowest possible price point and with supervision. No one would attack the growers.

Also, don't forget, violent criminals are usually not setting out to be violent criminals. It's just that they're really poor at impulse control. If you just make crime a little bit less convenient, they'll choose law and order out of slothful indulgence. Lighting up black markets is the best way to do that. Look what happened to the alcohol business.

If everything is legal, then there would be no crime?

I don't know if you've run into many actual criminals; they don't choose crime because it's inconvenient or because they lack impulse control. Many are quite well controlled, and often work much harder at not working an honest job than any ordinary person ever worked at making a legal buck. If you ever watched a shoplifting team or a forgery ring, you would abandon the idea that they "just lack impulse control."

If everything was legal, people would still commit crimes of opportunity; they would still want the quick buck over the slow buck, the money today over the money tomorrow. There would still be people who'd want to take the gains someone else made either by force or by fraud. It doesn't matter if drugs/booze/sex/gambling/investment banking is legal or illegal. If money rained down from the heavens every morning, there would still be some who are just too lazy or too conniving to go pick the crap up themselves and would find a way to get someone else to do it for them.

Drugs are currently the easiest and most cost-effective way to do that; it used to be the spice trade or the slave trade; in some areas it's gold or information. But your idea that people will obey the law if its in their own self-interest to do it sadly overlooks the fact that some people are just vicious, violent or lazy, its in their nature, and always will be.

addy2: TomD9938: doglover: The murder, and subsequently this fiasco would be very easily avoidable if we'd just legalized weed

This guy would have probably been a murderous thief even if weed were 100% legal.

The unfortunate truth. Illegal weed didn't make this dipshiat a murderer.

No no, I'm sure that if only pot was legal, this guy would  never have been a brutal killer whose neighbors are cheering and applauding that the cops had to drag him away kicking and screaming because they're so glad he's out of their neighborhood. If marijuana was legal, this guy would have grown up a perfect citizen with a job and a life.

Just like in the flip side of the argument, if only weed didn't exist, all those pothead slackers would be model citizens with jobs and lives, instead of living in their moms' basements and eating Cheetohs all day long. Guess what: lazy slackers will always be lazy slackers, and murdering scumbags will always be murdering scumbags, regardless of the excuse they pin their personality disorders on.

exactly. it's one thing to argue that the people being prosecuted for possession are only criminal because of silly laws, but guys like this are generally just criminals

Legalizing weed won't stop people from robbing and murdering.  It will make the growers less vulnerable targets.  So maybe this crew would've had to murder a coke dealer instead.  I'd say that's progress.

A San Joaquin County SWAT team used a K-9 officer, flash bang grenades, a remote-controlled vehicle and even an armored vehicle to tear off the front of the home to get to DiBartolomeo.

What good are flash-bangs. RC "vehicle" and armored vehicles if you never get to use them?

doglover:

I'm drunk and stoned, but I read that article twice and didn't see anything about marijuana.  To be fair to the cops, he was wanted for MURDER.

To any cops:  If you ever want to arrest me, you can skip the SWAT team .  I probably won't like being arrested, but I'm not going to fight you.  I'll get lawyers for that.

Drop this argument.  It isn't helping the cause.
Many things come from plants that are illegal and should stay illegal.
You aren't convincing anyone by saying "it's just a weed man".

ScreamingHangover: Marijuana? The wholesale market price on that has dropped so bad that the Mexican drug cartels have already moved on to heroin.

So now all we have to do is legalize heroin, and we'll eliminate crime completely!

That was more of a question of demand.  The pharmaceutical companies drove it.

Want some nice pharmaceutical grade opiates?  Yeah, here's an Oxy.

Oh, you really liked that, but they're expensive and hard to get?  Why don't you try THIS.

You think this was an ugly standoff? Just wait until the city sicks code enforcement on the property owner for failure to properly maintain the house.

reported: "That was unusual. In my 30 years in this business, I have never seen that," San Joaquin County spokesperson Deputy Les Garcia said.

Unusual, but the Garcia said that destruction was necessary.

"He was determined. We had received information that he would not give himself up alive," he said.

"The Garcia"? Perhaps the result of some French/Spanish/English auto-translate failure?

He has a kid named the Nino.
