A Del Taco pizza? Yeah, not on your freaking life.

I once paid $1,442.00 for some carne asada fries and a breakfast burrito.  Was supposed to be $14.42, and the person royally farked up at the register.  Got it all straightened out via my credit card company, but pissed me off real bad for a while.

It happened to me as well. Which is strange as I was paying with cash.

Two years ago I bought a new phone, with activation, first month bill, tax etc it was 250 and change, went down the street to eat only to have my card rejected so I used my other card to pay for dinner then tried to call my bank to find out WTF was up only to find that my new phone was shut off, found out that when the cell company ran the charge their computer hiccuped and just kept resubmitting the charge over and over again, on my statement it was almost 3 pages of 250 charges all time stamped as occurring in a 2 minute period which tripped the hell out of my banks fraud protection and shutting down my visa, which bounced the subsequent 250 charges causing the cell company to shut off my phone for non payment (even though they had about 200 years of prepayment charged to my account by then)

This happened to me at a restaurant once. The bill was 23.40, but was charged 234.00 and when I pointed it out they fixed it, refunded me the wrong amount and then charged me the correct, but I was charged 257.40 for that visit because it takes a few days for a refund to go through. So I was overdrawn that week. Bad times, bad times.

It's not an actual pizza.  It's basically a thick tostada with a bunch of toppings on it.

Reminds me of when I went to Menard's for some fencing supplies.  The cashier ran the fencing clips after the fence.  Total bill came out to be close to $10M.  The cashier couldn't figure it out and told me to just run the card through and take it to the customer service desk.  Instead, I flagged down the assistant manager who told him that the clips were free when buying fencing materials...right after the cashier cleared the order, causing him to have to rescan everything.

Then, there's the time our credit card processor at work multiplied the charge to a customer by pi.  They ended up charging it back to us, causing us to lose a $5K order.

No thanks. I've seen too much variety in those who have to take it. Including one who takes it and some meds that keep him alive as well.  He calls himself the patchwork human.  He has enough stints and stitches to make Frankenstein's Monster envious.  His words.

He once got knocked out by a pissed woman because he couldn't remember the wonderful night of sex they had the night before, what her name was, where he met her. Or even how the hell he got there since his doctors didn't want him driving. And nobody took him.

PURCHASE - $4,000.00
                OK?

Do the machines in the USA not say this?  In Canada, at any store, when you make a purchase using visa or debit, and you swipe your card in the little thing, the purchase doesn't go through right away, first it displays the amount it will be charging to your card on the screen, and then you have to press OK to confirm that.  Some of the machines have assignable context buttons, and randomly assign one to be the OK button, so it forces you to read the screen to figure out which button to press.

I've actually almost been overcharged by a factor of ten before, it happens, its just a missed keystroke on the cashier's end, but that's why you LOOK at the screen before pressing OK!

Or maybe they only keep a limited amount in the checking account with the debit card attached, because of all the fraud lately. And the rest is in savings or investments, or just another checking account with no debit/ATM card - which is now considered a smart financial move.

After the freaking IRS (and Michaels, but that's a distant second) sent me a letter saying "we got hacked", I opened a second checking account at my same bank for exactly that reason... set it up with no automatic overdraft transfer in either direction, and no debit card on the larger one. Nothing comes out of the big one except automatic monthly payments (so they can't fail by surprise) and the few actual checks I write. That way if my debit card gets compromised, I can't lose more than a couple thousand dollars. And the bigger account can be the kind that pays interest but requires a minimum balance to avoid fees.

Fast food is often cheaper than cooking at home, at least in the short term, and close to half of Americans have less than $800 in savings at any given time.

moeburn: PURCHASE - $4,000.00

It depends on the machine.  At retailers it's typical for there to be a keypad where you have to confirm the number.  At restaurants (including most fast food places) as well as retailers that aren't part of a big chain the card is usually run and then you have to sign the receipt, but you don't get to OK the amount beforehand.  If you look at the receipt you can alert them if it's wrong and they can void the transaction, but it's already run and there will usually be a hold for the initial amount on your card or account for at least a few days.

Hey, don't bag on the Del. Their food is way better than the other major fast food Mexican chains.Their beans are fresh cooked, whereas many of the other guys (Taco Bell, most prominently) use reconstituted powdered beans. And they do serve burgers and fries; I've been veg or near-veg for a very long time and can't comment on the burgers, but the fries are very good. They also have "specialty" items like fish tacos and shrimp burritos. Still not anywhere near restaurant caliber but you can really fill up for $2-3.

For some reason I've never really enjoyed a Del Taco burrito nearly as much as even a Taco Bell monstrosity. But El Pollo Loco destroys both of them.

----- DAMN STRAIGHT.
Taco Bell's sorry excuse for an 89 cent taco is an abomination.

Del Taco deluxe taco for a buck is INCREDIBLE.
And they actually let you have some cheese!
Taco Hell gives you cheese like sprinkles on a cupcake, and the "baja taco" is a farking INSULT.

There's a reason there was a hardcore band in New Mexico in the 90's called FTB.

So if I have $2000 in my account, a $4000 debit would still overdraw me. So I shouldn't go spend $5 on lunch if all I have is $2K?

/still stupid.

It's my rule.  And 4000 and change, despite the 2,000 mentioned,  is too little for me to justify enjoying a restaurant. I've been hit with too many bills before to justify it in the future.  Should I be at that point again.
