And don't forget the race to avoid Europa League purgatory. Come on you Spurs!

Supposedly Diego Costa has already agreed to a contract with Chelsea. With Chelsea's recent track record with expensive strikers, how long do you think it'll take before they'll ruin him?

Today is Record Store Day also and the only reason I"m up early.  I'm spending entirely way too much money on records and will try to ignore it by watching soccer.

Fulham has been the better side this half. Quite a change from their midseason collapses.

Bad defending on that free-kick. Left Paulinho completely open.

Well that was a fun 2 minutes.

Banker on Spurs today. Feeling as if I am going to regret it.

Liam "Billy" Whelan played four times for Ireland and scored 52 goals in 98 games for Manchester United. He was 22 years old when he died in the Munich disaster.

A few years ago a bridge in Dublin was renamed in his honour, near where he was born and where his family (including his brother) still live.

On Monday afternoon, this happened:

On Monday evening, Bohemians FC fans covered it up:

On Tuesday, the graffiti had been removed and fans started leaving jerseys:

Spurs fans already packing it in? WHL is awfully quiet.

I had this as a 2-1 Spurs win. Thankfully, I resisted the temptation of banking on this match.

I was a mess yesterday. But I did learn one important and very valuable lesson: if three drinking buddies from high school want to connect and hang out and get lit up on a weeknight, the guys that are either divorced or still single have a whole lot more time for recreational drinking. I was the only married guy of the group and whatever competition there may have been, I surely lost.

I'm still a bit bleary today, but at least I'm functional.

Started off this morning with a perfect. Shame I didn't use my banker on it, but Tottenham has had a lot of mixed performances lately and I don't entirely trust them to perform consistently.

I'm watching on TV, and they're showing Cardiff/Stoke, so I'm catching that one by default.

Nathanjr cruises into the top spot with four rounds to go.

My calm, balanced reaction?

encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com

At the bottom, cameroncrazy1984's corpse lets out one last whisper of gas. Cognitive_Displaysia makes it through the 600 point barrier and it's close at the top of Page 2 with Gonz_Hotspur, Rev.K and MNMarkPW all within 25 points.

LucklessWonder and The_Envoy came joint third with 115s, latter accreting, former with a +90 from Everton squeaking past Mackems. Nathanjr in second place with 125, three perfects outweighing a busted banker. Top score of the round belongs to  Langston, with only 3 of 11 results wrong and a very cheeky +45 from CP Vs Villa.

Kevinatilusa and StRalphtheLiar zenned.

On the slide, goomba lost 5, cameroncrazy1984 auto-ed to -20 but krej55 had one perfect standing out amidst a terrible performance otherwise to give a -40.

As predicted last week - one of the few I got right this round alas - we had a banker massacre with both CP and Mackems not performing as advertised. Presidency of the BB club falls 6 spots to Stimied.

In the old days, before there was a fourth official, they occasionally had to appeal to the crowd for a replacement credentialed official. It's surprising how often there was one.

They probably should have done that at Newcastle.  The 4th official is that guy who messed up a couple penalty calls last week (or maybe two weeks ago).

Haha, ftom BBC:

Tottenham's Sandro tweets: "Good morning Guys, just to let you know that i'm not injured ! Hope that we can win the game today. "

BBC asks Tim Sherwood about that after the game, Sherwood says: "He's entitled to do what he wants. He's right, he's not injured. He's not good enough to play in my team at the moment... "

I'm realizing this morning that mediocre football is not my cup of tea 1st thing in the morning. I'm officially dragging here.

Also, I see that the Norwich-Liverpool match starts at 4am my time tomorrow. Chances of me being awake for that - pretty much nil.

Cardiff has blown a lot of chances today. If they only manage a point today they have nobody to blame but themselves.

2014-04-19 11:56:42 AM
1-1 a fair result for Cardiff and Stoke, I think.  Credit where it's due though:  Howard Webb was fantastic in that game. We give refs a hard time when they suck.  But he got every big decision right and calmed things down very well when the handbags started flying.

+50 on Spurs (w/ bonus), -40 on the others. Sigh...

I hate bitaching about fantasy sports, but I have to vent here...

My fantasy EPL team had 6 players on it either likely or definitely out due to injury or suspension this week. So I made two transfers (incurring a points penalty) just so I had some players.

Then I find out just now that Cech is out today due to a virus and he's my keeper. WTF!?

I really don't know if I can wake up for the 4:00am local kickoff time tomorrow of NOR v LIV. I get up at 5am most weekdays to jog before work as it is and I really didn't sleep well last night. God damn it.

And it's Wickham again. He had all of 1 PL goal before this week. Now he's had 3 in the past few days.

If Sunderland and West Brom pulled off miracle draws this week, I'd just about shiat myself.

It'd reveal the long plan that Liverpool made with him: Torres is a double agent, draining Chelsea of funds, revealing his true colors when he sabotages Chelsea in order to give Liverpool the title.

So I had to run out and get some errands done today and decided to do that during the Chelsea match so I wouldn't miss any playoff hockey. As soon as I get in the car at my last stop, I turn on the satellite radio to the SiriusXM soccer channel and hear the full time score of Chelsea 1, Sunderland 2. It took me 3 minutes to comprehend those words and then I just started laughing my ass off. I can not wait to watch the highlights tonight, especially knowing that it was Fabio Borini doing the deed for Sunderland and for Liverpool (and maybe for most of England). Can we have Borini knighted?

To elaborate, two more Liverpool wins put them at:

Title-2pts if City draw against either WBA or Palace and win the other
Title-1pt if City win one and lose the other
Champions if City can't win either of those.

Moyes' 50 failings in 50 games

Wilfried Zaha wanders from the path to greatness

Evra nominates Suarez for POTY. Again.

Manchester United's David Moyes must face down the demonising at Everton

Leighton Baines: "The two managers are totally different, in every way. They both have things they are really good at but with the current manager, he's ultra-positive. He takes the positive from every single scenario. That's been the big thing for me: the difference in the style of play, committing to that and not feeling like we have to adapt to the opposition. The new manager has that confidence and belief in himself, in his own blueprint. And then in us. He tells us we're not going to change, we're just going to improve constantly and keep practising until we get to the level where we want to be. Stick to it, don't compromise, get better at it."

Roberto Martinez: 'United's squad is bigger and better than people are trying to make out.'
'An ageing squad if you win becomes an experienced squad with knowhow. If you lose, it becomes the players have no legs. It's something in between those extremes.
'You look at Chelsea, title contenders, but squad-wise worse than United.'

Princip's Sandwich: Anyone else awake for this?

Yeah, somehow dragged myself outta bed for this one. Hockey playoffs making these early matches tough.

Someone has to represent the Reds

2014-04-20 07:11:04 AM
Suarez gets the expected goal and it's 2-0. I obviously was pessimistic on their goal output here. 2-0 banker.

2014-04-20 07:12:36 AM
Great save by Ruddy

2014-04-20 07:13:03 AM

Norfolking Chance: The sad thing is our defence has been mostly solid this year. The goals we leak have mostly been great shots from outside the area.

Liverpool is just too much for them today. The ball control, passing and movement would be hard for any defense, and Liverpool really wants those three points today.

2014-04-20 07:13:32 AM
It looks like I have the early stream today.

I'd be surprised if Liverpool managed to keep a clean sheet today. Norwich with a real opportunity there.

Not entirely sure how Norwich didn't get one back there.

Surely Sterling has to go to Brazil in place of Welbeck?

689908: Moyes' 50 failings in 50 games

Some of those are legitimate criticisms, but several of them seem sort of repeated (e.g. Fellaini criticism) or hair splitting after the fact. It really comes down to being too conservative, playing not to lose rather than to win. He didn't have a good transfer window last summer, that much is certain. Fellaini still looks like a panic buy after other deals fell through. This season has been pretty awful by the standards set by Ferguson, but even if he had stayed, United wouldn't have repeated their title-winning form this season.

Snodgrass lucky to not get straight red on his tackle of Allen

Oh, without a doubt. Moyes' mistakes since taking over have been many. They've also been ridiculously magnified, because 1) Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, 2) United won the title last season under arguably their most iconic manager, and 3) Moyes has a different personality than Ferguson's fire, which by comparison makes him look weak under this kind of scrutiny.

He's managing a team of players that (except for Fellaini) are all accustomed to Ferguson's style. Believe it or not, Moyes' win percentage with United is higher than any other United coach except Ferguson (if Wikipedia is to be believed) so far, and there's still lots of room for improvement. Undoubtedly he could have done much better at several points this season. Sadly, he'll be let go before anybody really gets to see what he would have done over time.

Liverpool came flying out of the gate again. Almost 3-0 there.

I never thought it was a dive. But for sure highlighted that he was a basis point as injured as he was making out.

Why not two?  Liverpool is doing it's usual 20 minutes of brilliance and 70 of mediocrity.  Our 20 minutes is usually amazing enough to make up for the 70 and some.

You should've picked Sterling.  You're 2-0 up without him on the pitch.

SmackLT: This season has been pretty awful by the standards set by Ferguson, but even if he had stayed, United wouldn't have repeated their title-winning form this season.

I totally disagree. The standard below Liverpool isn't very good, and he wouldn't have let them win the league. He just wouldn't.

Say United had beaten LFC once this season (as we often did, but not always) and won one of the games in hand (Hull at home is more likely than Everton away), that would put Liverpool on 77 and United on 63. You don't think there's another 15 points out there in is this horrible, miserable, pathetic season that Ferguson would have won?

I sound so f*cking Scouse. Next year ... (we'll finish 5th).

For god's sake, Moyes, stop playing Fletcher and Carrick together. Too slow and predictable, too much sideways.

And stop playing Kagawa out of position. And Jones, for that matter.

For the second half, Moyes should bring on Valencia for Nani, let Kagawa play in the middle close to Mata, and bring on Januzaj for Carrick.

But since this is Moyes we're talking about, he'll probably bring on Fellatio for Fletcher, and then wait for the last ten minutes before throwing Welbeck and Hernandez on in place of the wide players.

With the Liverpool win, Arsenal and Everton were both mathematically eliminated from title contention. Only 3 teams are still alive and no one has a higher points maximum than Liverpool (89 to MC's 86 and Chelsea's 84).

2014-04-20 04:46:26 PM
OK, as desertgeek mentioned, Liverpool has now qualified for the group stage of the CL.  Any points against Chelsea next week means that Liverpool would have to lose their last two games to finish worse than second.  A win against Chelsea means that Liverpool would need only four points in the last two games to win the PL.

Barring a bizarre collapse and/or Everton blowing out opponents (as in beating Man City 9-0), Chelsea is also in the CL.  Four points will put them in the CL playoffs and five points into the group stages.  Chelsea need to beat Liverpool next week or they had better hope for minor miracles.  They could still finish second if Man City drops points.

Man City is probably out of the CL if they lose the rest of their games--they will face Everton.  With their goal difference, they only would need to get seven points to make the CL and eight points to make the group stages.  If they win out, they could win the PL on goal difference if Liverpool only get six points out of the remaining three games.  Man City will be cheering for Chelsea to win outright next week.

Arsenal and Everton need to win out to even have a prayer of getting an automatic berth in the CL group stage.  Any dropped points by either will likely lose the final CL berth.  This gives the edge to Arsenal because Everton faces Man City.  Arsenal has earned a berth in Europe.  Barring a complete collapse, Everton will also get a berth in Europe.

Tottenham is still mathematically alive for a CL berth.  But they would need Arsenal and Everton to each gain only one or two points in their last three games.  Because of goal difference, Tottenham will need at least seven points to finish ahead of Man United.

Man United will not be in the CL next year.  I'm not quite sure if the seventh place team in the PL still has a chance at Europe.  If so, Man United needs to win out to ensure their place--that's only if Southampton wins out.  If Southampton drops any points, Man United is assured seventh place.

Southampton needs to win out and have Man United drop points to gain seventh place.

Europa is still possible for MUFC thanks to Man City's League Cup win. Since City is likely going to the UCL, the Europa League spot reserved for League Cup winners would go to the 6th place team and while MU is 6 points behind Spurs for 6th, they do have a game in hand.  I would not call it likely, but they're not out of it.

Also at this point, 4 teams have nothing to play for since they can't be relegated and can't get a spot in Europe: Southampton, Newcastle, Stoke and Palace

2014-04-20 04:57:28 PM
If Arsenal finish in the top four, Hull qualify for Europe. If Arsenal finish fifth and win the FA Cup, 7th in the PL qualifies for the Europa League.

2014-04-21 06:55:15 AM

Lord Jubjub: Man United will not be in the CL next year. I'm not quite sure if the seventh place team in the PL still has a chance at Europe.

Bizarrely, the seventh place team does have an outside shot this year. Normally the three Eurolol places go to...

1. The FA Cup winners or, if the winners qualify for the CL, then the runners-up
2. The 5th place team
3. The League Cup winners or, if already qualified for Europe (i.e. Man City), the 6th place team.

BUT this year there is the following possibility: if Arsenal win the FA Cup and finish 5th, then Hull does not qualify as runners-up. (That backdoor only applies if the winner qualifies for the CL.) In that scenario,

1. Arsenal qualify as FA Cup winners, go straight to the group stages
2. The 6th place team qualify in place of the 5th, and go to the playoff stage
3. The 7th place team qualify in place of the 6th in place of the League Cup winner (if you follow me), and go to Q3 qualifying in early August.

(Yes, I know that people have been saying that Hull were guaranteed to play in Europe next year, but that was back when Arsenal seemed a certainty for the CL. If Arsenal slip to 5th, everything changes. EL qualification is a hot mess.)

If qualifying for the Europa League is a poisoned chalice, qualifying in the bottom slot is a chalice poisoned with iocaine powder.

I would imagine that no players get bought without input from the manager, so Fellaini can probably be blamed on him, too.

Princip's Sandwich: eagles95: LucklessWonder: ADubs86: A few reports coming that Moyes gets his walking papers TODAY. Still unconfirmed.

They must have somebody already lined up to take the job, and want to give them a transfer window.

Griggs would be interim manager per reports. Isn't Barca or Real Madrid's manager talked about coming to England?

I'd laugh if anyone's thinking of hiring Martino after Barcelona's season. He's supposedly going back to Argentina. As for Ancelotti, I don't think he'd take that big a step down unless he's getting paid a lot of money.

I find it funny ManU is now a step down. How much of a money hit is it for ManU to not make CL this year

Yeah, but if you're Man United you have players pounding at your door to be a part of that.  The directors fumbled that in the worst way possible.

IIRC very early in the window United going for both Fellaini and Baines in a package deal but the price was less than £30 Million.  So to go from both at £30M to just Fellaini at the same price sounds like someone screwed that up badly.

I get the fact you don't want to overshoot when you file an initial bid, but there is absolutely no way in hell that a manager can turn to his former club so shortly after accepting the new job and make a below-market value offer for two of their (at the time) best players without a pretty big stink being made. So, being only able to get Fellatio in the end for that amount was one thing, but Everton had every right to publicize the initial offer and go ballistic because of the gall in that initial offer was something to behold.

Yes, and in particular the board isn't going to buy a player from the manager's old club without the manager's backing. And remember, he could have been bought earlier in the transfer window for less money because of a buyout clause in his contract.

The Fellaini fiasco is representative of so much that went wrong for Moyes. Before he left Everton, Fellaini was in the middle of trying to transition from attacking midfielder (which Utd still need) to defensive/holding midfielder (which they didn't). So you start with a player unsure about his own best role. And then Moyes didn't seem to know where to fit him in at Utd, despite knowing him well: he really didn't have a plan for either Old Fellaini nor New Fellaini. Consequently, on the few occasions that he did play, he seemed lost, with no idea whether he should be playing the attacking role Moyes wanted or the defensive role he wanted for himself, and ended up doing neither. (See also: Mata).

Utd have plenty of players who can hold (Cleverly, Fletcher, Carrick come immediately to mind). They lack players who can pick the ball up in midfield and run with it at their feet.

And for the record, I don't think Welbeck and Chicharito are similar players, but I do think they play in the same spaces and mostly go after the same opportunities, the loose balls and second chances around the six yard box.

So now you think Cleverley should be in the team? Fletcher didn't play until December, and hasn't exactly been great. Carrick has had a terrible season. United have been regularly overrun in midfield for years. Signing somebody with the aggression and physical presence of Fellaini (to play in central midfield) made perfect sense, except he's been technically woeful, whatever the opposite of physical is, and he is incredibly nasty.

Welbeck and Chicharito aren't similar, but they play in the same spaces and go after the same opportunities. So how would you describe them if you *did* think they were similar? For what it's worth, in my opinion Welbeck and Chicharito are about as polar opposite as possible. In basic terms, Welbeck has everything except finishing ability, Chicharito has nothing except finishing ability.

But Giggs has been with the team for 24 years. He knows the workings of the club better than anyone else available for the job.

I'm also thinking of Neil Lennon's succession as the manager of Celtic after Martin O'Neill stood down. Or, Souness with Rangers, back in the day.

Giggs may never have been the first team coach before, but he surely knows the team better than Moyes does. Player -> manager transitions happen, and, could Giggs be worse than Moyes? Remember how well Everton are doing at the moment.

Go for it. Or maybe you could pick a fight over whether Suarez' talent is worth his shenanigans? I could use something fun and meaningless right now.

I watched the Liverpool game -- something I rarely do, but I'd far rather they lift the title than Citeh or Chelski, and frankly, the Liverpool/Man Utd rivalry is one of the best in the game, and I'd actually enjoy seeing both be title contenders at the same time again -- and later the Man Utd game, and the thing that really struck me is Liverpool's movement off the ball and ahead of the ball. The contrast with Utd, with everybody static, no appealing target, and inevitably a series of pointless sideways passes, was striking. Liverpool has a lot of players who can run with the ball and who will run without the ball. Utd really lacks that -- the closest they have is Januzaj, and for some reason he rarely gets 90 minutes.

But right now, my biggest concern is that Utd don't qualify for the last Europa League place and consequently screw up my rare chance of seeing them over here in the US in the summer.

I'll give Man Utd credit for this: they're not resting on their laurels. They could've said "we're going to give Moyes time to make things right" and that would've been justifiable considering it was still his 1st season and there are some players on the team who are past their prime.

But I think it was obvious that SAF farked this one up. He chose Moyes and Moyes wasn't qualified to take on that role. And maybe SAF knew that whomever replaced him would be in for a hard time and chose Moyes to be a jerk (and be honest, MU fans: SAF is a jerk). Now whomever takes over for Moyes doesn't have the SAF burden on him.

I've said in the past that this season should've always been viewed as a rebuilding year. If Moyes had just missed the UCL by finishing 5th, I doubt he gets sacked. But MU is going to end up in the same spot that Liverpool finished last season. The difference between the 2 situations is that we knew what Liverpool was going for. There was a direction they were going and we could see that (we just didn't expect to get to where we are so fast). Man Utd doesn't have that clear direction right now. Therefore, a change had to be made.
