Every year, my grandmother got an egg carton filled with these.  They'd be gone before the week was out.  Fire and brimstone befell anybody who came within arm reach of that carton.

B) They're often priced on sale before Easter as well.
C) It's spelled "Creme" not "Cream."

I hardly ever see much holiday stuff left over and offered at a discount anymore.  I guess most retailers really know to estimate demand for this stuff and order just enough.

...The former Mrs Coast reverse engineered the creme recipe many years ago, and while I was deployed one Easter she sent me a homemade creme egg.

The size of a gorram football.  I remember very little of the following week, as my blood sugar was spiking into the low four figures.

Sometimes they really screw up still, a grocery store near me is still trying to dump coversation hearts. I bought abuch of them for my sister at 50 cents for 500g in the middle of March.

It seems like more stores are better at predicting demand (or, just as likely, preferring to lose sales due to lack of stock over selling them at a loss). That said, I will be hitting up a couple stores Monday.

I pretty much know what you're talking about.

Easter candy is the bomb, but I have reactive hypoglycemia and my husband can find me passed out on the floor about an hour after I eat something like that.  I spike and then crash hard.

But a homemade egg the size of a football sounds like an irrestistible challenge.

I have friends that buy them and keep them. They claim they have some bacteria that makes the center 'oozier' and better. Some even claim that they 'ferment'.

I used to like them as a kid. The Mrs...used to buy me one a year. I was away on a business trip a few months ago and bought one. Three beers doesn't spike my blood sugar and make me tired like that one little egg. Woke up like I had been drugged.

can't do it again.

They were better years ago. At least in the US they were. Cadbury had two factories making the eggs years ago, then they got bought out and closed the one that normally supplies the US. The other factory has a different filling recipe which is much worse.

Or, there are more discount stores now willing to take the overage from the mainstream grocery stores, whose shelf space is more valuable than that.

That explains a lot.  I log my food on myfitnesspal.com which has a large database of all sorts of foods, going back many years.  I noticed that the cadbury eggs have gotten smaller.  They used to be 39g, now they are 34g.

No idea where you are shopping that they are that price.  Everywhere I see singles they are either 69 or 79 cents.  Four packs are usually just under $3, some places have them at that price with a bonus 5th egg.  And yes, I did recently buy a 5 pack and eat all of them within 15 minutes.  Also have killed off my fair share of Mini Eggs over the last few weeks.

I recently bought a Cadbury egg, along with one of those Lindt balls with the chocolate filling inside.

It was interesting to compare them right next to each other. The Lindt ball was so vastly, vastly better than the Cadbury, that I no longer ever feel the need to have the Cadbury egg again.

Yeah, I just looked it up on Wikipedia. That must be why the quality of the chocolate doesn't seem to be up to par - not that it needs to be, with such sweet filling. They also decreased the size of the eggs slightly in 2006.
