Nobody worships the number 8. The "8theist" is the 8th theist - it's like Fark account numbers.

I seem to recall hearing a story about someone being fired for being an atheist and being told they couldn't sue for religious discrimination because atheism isn't a religion. Google is failing me at the moment, though.

Why are Christians so insecure?  Is your message so fkn weak that a license plate will corrupt you?

Seriously, show some confidence rather than batting down everything you don't like.

It may not be a Christian thing specifically. There is a database of off-limits language on various grounds--the story is from 2013 but it has a database you can page through. You can't have "JEW" or "JIHAD" either.

A Michigan mayor who says that he believes in freedom of religion has refused to allow atheists to set up a so-called "Reason Station" inside City Hall, saying it could upset Christians visiting the nearby "Prayer Station."

In a letter to Marshall, Fouts explained that the Freedom From Religion Foundation was not protected under the First Amendment's Establishment clause because atheism was not a religion.

Yikes.

Who worships 8?  Well, in Chinese culture "8" is a pretty big deal.  Try getting a vanity plate in Hong Kong with a series of 8's or a building address with a bunch of 8's.

Since they say they manually review everything I bet they'll just say although baptist passed the auto scan they would have denied that request just like the 8theist one.  I had OMG WTF for 5 years until the maryland DMV sent me a letter asking me to tell them what it meant and that after an automatic review my tag was flagged.  I always assumed someone complained about it.  You can't have anything fun anymore.

/Not in maryland anymore, yay!

I personally avoid putting messages of any kind of my car. Mostly because if I did they would not be pro-conservative messages and just about all the hardcore conservatives I know are a vicious lot. I'd rather not have to spend money to fix things just because they can't tolerate anything that doesn't line up with their ideals.

Additionally, I've been physically attacked by a Christian because he found out I'm an atheist. And while I understand that not all Christians are as shiatty as that guy was, I'd rather not take the chance.

You can easily flip that around and ask why are there some atheists who need to advertise that that they are atheist any chance they can? T-shirts, bumper stickers, licence plates, key chains, just about anything knick-knack used by Christians to advertise their faith, you can find the atheist version of it proclaiming their lack there of. Both can be pretty obnoxious.

No, I don't want to hear about how Jesus Christ died for my sins.

And, no, I don't want to hear how Jesus is a fictional character and God is a fairy tale either.

Wise words indeed. I am what I am and don't need to advertise....although I used to wear the rainbow colors mixed in with my jewelry and I had pride colors on my car. Why would I do that, well to make a political statement and let people now ya one more queer out there and well this is probably the same so stop judging?

Athiest may already be in use, or made unavailable for some reason. From the article, it sounds like the state will allow 8theist (they allowed ath1est after a lawsuit), it's just that the state uses low-level peons make subjective initial decisions, and citizens apparently have to file a lawsuit to dispute those decisions.

Yes but the point is it's only the one side trying to censor/outlaw the other, as in the case in TFA with the license plates.

Atheists often feel the need to advertise their presence because the entrenched religious establishment continues to operate as if they don't exist, absent visible pressure to do otherwise (for just one example, see TFA).  Atheists are a minority who are not discernible from the majority based merely on physical inspection, and the current mindset in the US is still to assume Christianity by default, so many atheists feel the need to proclaim their position because unless they do so they get counted amongst the "Christian Majority" by those who claim to represent that majority.

I need to find a bumper sticker that reads something along the lines of "If you can see what I'm jacking off to, learn how to use your brakes."
