What exactly is Coachella? Is it more of a music festival? A fashion festival? Is it like Burning Man but for yuppies? I don't get it, but it makes me cranky.

Based on the demographics of my friends who are going and their descriptions...

It's a giant White/Hispanic Trash reunion where they get drunk and high.

There may be music, but orthogonal to drunk and high.

/Also, completely off topic, what's up with the golf courses?  There's like more golf courses than people.

Ok, if I was young, beautiful, and had money to burn, I'd do it.

You would, too.

Don't lie.

If that plane ended up as a giant fireball in the middle of the concert crowd would anything of value have been lost?

Isn't that what having money is really for?

Honestly, I wouldn't.  Not because I'm opposed to the idea of the flight, but because I have zero desire to go to Coachella no matter how I get there.

Also, I try to avoid Indio as much as possible.  I had to drive through that town and its speed traps far, far, far too many times before they build the 86S bypass.

In music festival terms, it's the fall guy. It takes one for the team and quarantines all the shiat bags from crashing all the good underground festivals.

I don't know what it is, but I know it somehow escaped from the Entertainment tab.

A great place to contract HIV.  There is a lot of negative stuff about Coachella, but at least there is one positive.

And after the show, you can catch Lindsay Lohan (who's gonna be there and is swearing up and down she'll be sober) snorting and drinking with hipsters who will in turn sell the photos to TMZ. Just kidding. It'll be during, before, and after the show.

I called it!

Say what you will about Coachella, but I went last year and New Order  killed it.
Also, the Violent Femmes played everything from their first record beginning to end, which was neat.

//yes, New Order is still around

Its where dirty hipsters and dirtier hippies congregate.

Its the only thing Indio is known for.

Was better before they locked you in like a prison for a whole weekend instead of one day tickets.

Bye.

No! New Order is not still around, any more than Joy Division is still around

I got bored of going to large festivals a looong time ago.  I'm sure they did kill it, but having to fight your way to the front to camp out a spot, probably not being able to see (5'2'' me, and concert etiquette used to mean tall people wouldn't cut their way up to the front to stand directly in front of me... ah, at least I still have a good accidental elbowing move), and crappy sound = just not worth it.

I did go to Laneway outside of Detroit this year and was pretty damn apprehensive, except Dismemberment Plan and Sigur Ros were playing so I was totally f--king going.  Apparently they didn't do a great job on the marketing side of things, or deliberately undersold, because it was amazing.  Had to get up to the stage all of 20 minutes early to be right in front.  Beautiful.

Every once in a while a quote comes along which simply screams, "I AM YOUNG" and this quote is it.

Lawrence seemed calm as she talked about renewing her visa to stay in America.
"I feel like people don't really need to 'live' anywhere," she said. "I just sold all of my stuff and it's the best feeling."

Wait until the big decision in your life honey is whether you get to die in a hospice or at home. Then come back and talk to me about how leaving all your possession behind and living wherever you want is "the best feeling".

To be truly underground is to be in a state of constant digging.

I was just in the neighborhood. Not AT Coachella music festival, just close to it.

I'm there on spring break with my little kids, I didn't have a choice in the timing, their school was on break for the week. Some of our kids' school friends' families were vacationing there, so sure, we'll make it a group thing!

Gawd.  Okay.  Lemme boil this thing down into one brief scenario that kinda summed up the interaction between us and *them*.

# Young 20-something woman in an unusual bathing suit (tasteful enough, just ... not mainstream).
# Standing in the pool in the shallow end.
# Right next to where all the little kids are splashing/playing. In the shallow end because they don't really swim yet.
# GLARING at the kids and their parents because ...
# She's texting and doesn't want her phone to get wet.
