Research whaling is a means to seek a way out of the current situation of moratorium by collecting scientific data. So, we aim to resume commercial whaling at the earliest possible date, by conducting research whaling," Mr Hayashi said.

Research whaling is used to research ways in which we can replace commercial whaling with research whaling by researching the effects of using research whaling as a replacement for commercial whaling.

I just love this humor. Can anyone comment on what influences they think this joke structure might have? reminds me of The Simpsons (I take everything back to The Simpsons), possibly Arrested Development. Anyway. I think it is a funny headline, sad and troubling, but funny in the way that you have to laugh or else be forced to cry.

Why don't we call them when these stupid animals beach themselves. We get rid of dying whale before it turns into a stink bomb and they get yummy blubber.

Well, duh, the research onto the best methods of making whale sushi is continuing.

We are conducting research on the sinking of whaling boats.

The only way to find out if it's okay to kill whales is to keep killing whales.  Until we find out for sure!

Anyway, dangnabbit.  I just got back a few weeks ago from a vacation to Japan.  It's a great country.  I liked it a lot.  But this bullcrap has got to stop.

We already won a war with Japan.  They're no longer perceived as a direct threat.

They certainly don't have the firepower to go toe-to-toe with us, but I hear they have weaponized the technology that can blur our genitals en masse. We should tread carefully.

I'm pretty sure that'd be an act of war or piracy or somesuch.

And thus the US is likely treaty-bound to assist.

We do have a military to speak of.

Well the US certainly ignores them when it suits our government's agenda.

You don't say.

After the court ruled that the U.S.'s covert war against Nicaragua was in violation of international law (Nicaragua v. United States), the United States withdrew from compulsory jurisdiction in 1986. The United States accepts the court's jurisdiction only on a case-by-case basis.

Yeah, you heard that, but it's mostly not true. Whale's beach themselves for all sorts of reasons, usually because of illness. Sonar is bad for whales, but it kills far fewer than just the existence of big ships (they run down whales far more frequently than sonar causes beachings).

But just in case you're not, aside from USN and RoK navy, the naval forces of every signal Pacific nation combined would be utterly destroyed by the JMSDF

Does it bring their hearing to a full stop ? How many feet does it take ? Maybe that's why they
beach themselves, they've got defective breaks !

They are hunting a species that is barely understood by us, falls in a category of extremely complex mammalian life, and has brain parts and processes that we cannot understand or explain yet. There gestation, infant, and childhood stages are more similar to our than any other animal we hunt or farm. The fact is, it is not racist to be against genocide of a complex, sentient species that shares more in common, cognitively, with us than other organisms.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government can't get anybody to eat the whales they slaughter, because whale meat tastes terrible even to Japanese palates.

Maybe the IWC should do it's job then. The ban was always supposed to be temporary until the IWC could come up with sustainable whaling numbers. It's not Japan's fault the IWC is a shiatty organization who can't get off it's ass and do the job it was assigned. Hell, if most of us sat around playing with ourselves for 22 years not doing the job we were hired for we'd be fired or sued or both. I have no problem with Japan (as well as Norway and Iceland) telling that crooked corporation to get bent.

Whale sushi was on the menu at a restaurant we were at during my recent visit there.  Couldn't tell you if anybody was ordering it, but I feel like somebody must, if they're bothering to keep it in stock.

The PRC navy might pose a challenge - it has a truckload of subs.

According to that Wiki, Iceland does as well.

I guess they're just lucky that the Discovery channel apparently likes the Pacific better than the North Atlantic.
