Fark you.  I read up on this a while ago and went into the article with a reasonably accurate understanding of their efficacy.  Stop assuming I'm dumb.  It's been like 20 years since I tried to make CD shurikens.  Let it go.  I went to college!

2014-04-18 09:25:12 AM
Compare their efficacy with the efficacy of no vaccine at all and get back with me.

Viruses are pussies. Just snarl fiercely at them and they'll run for it.

They're fine when included with herd immunity.

2014-04-18 10:16:00 AM
Was anyone assuming they were 100% effective?

I've got some bad news for you about condoms...

They don't work as well as NPR thinks I think they do.

They work exactly as well as I actually think I do.

It's called Her Immunity.  The anti-Vaxxers are farking it up for EVERYONE, immunized or not.

2014-04-18 01:05:28 PM
Well, that was an unfortunate typo / auto-correct.

Who is this biatch who is hoarding all the immunity?  She should totally share.

Yeah, I wasn't too interested in seeing that movie either.

Maybe they don't work as well because, going out on a limb here so just hang with me a moment, maybe they don't work as well because of all the people who refuse to get them for themselves or their children? Do you think that could be a possibility?

2014-04-18 01:48:44 PM
They do when everyone gets them.

And it's not "vaxxer vs. anti-vaxxer." It's "normal people" vs. "nutcases with persecution complexes" and "people who don't want to admit that their genes produced children with various afflictions."

Anyone remember the whole calamity from the military's forced anthrax shots years back?

Something something George Carlin talking about swimming in raw sewage something something fear of germs.

2014-04-18 01:49:25 PM
Well I've never gotten anything I'm vaccinated against, so they work just fine for me.

If it helps, every time I see it quoted, I read it in Angela Lansbury's voice.

This is common knowledge. It is also the reason that anti-vaxxers aren't just killing their own spawn when they get their medical advice from celebrities.

If it works it shouldn't matter what other people do. Luckily most intelligent people know they are not 100% effective

SquiggsIN: It doesn't work 100% of the time is rarely a good reason to abandon something entirely that works the vast majority of the time.

We only lost 2 space shuttles. Doesn't mean we have to shut it down. Oh, we did, never mind.

It's not really "Dont' really work as well as you think you do" and more "Don't really work like you think they do"

They're not there to give you magical immunity to things. THey give your body a small dose and your immune system takes over the rest, and mileage may vary from person to person, disease to disease.

If it's not 100% effective, why bother? That's why I never wear a seat belt, use condoms, or floss.

George wasn't really talking about vaccines. He was talking about the Howard Hughes type people who over-clean everything.

This highlights an endemic problem in this culture of ignorance.  People actually and honestly believe that vaccinations are supposed to be 100% effective.

I guess stupid people are more easily led and riled and misguided.

I hate the "Because nothing is perfect, we should not do anything" argument.

2014-04-18 01:54:05 PM
This just in: Vaccines are like armor, not an invulnerable shield. Vaccines are also complex medications that are influenced by social factors, such as vaccine uptake in a population, as well as individual immune system differences.

2014-04-18 01:54:56 PM

CruJones: If it works it shouldn't matter what other people do.

It does matter, according to the article.

Are you saying that vaccines don't work as well when large groups of people aren't immunized?
Correct. Vaccines have two functions: Protect the person vaccinated and provide protection to the entire community.
If you want to eliminate the infection entirely from a community, a very high proportion of people have to be immunized.
If children are left unvaccinated, measles will find them and make them sick. It's one of the most contagious diseases we have.

2014-04-18 01:55:11 PM

Infernalist: People actually and honestly believe that vaccinations are supposed to be 100% effective.

The Nirvana Fallacy works both ways against vaccines being effective. People believe that they are 100% effective, and that they don't need to get a vaccine because other people have it - OR - they believe it's not worth it if it won't work 100% of the time irregardless of social or medical factors.

It is at the core of the anti-science movement. Everything must be 100% or we fall back on the "do nothing" position.

/ have I mentioned that the anti-science people are phenomenally stupid? That has been proven to be 100% true btw.

2014-04-18 01:56:04 PM

BizarreMan: Compare their efficacy with the efficacy of no vaccine at all and get back with me.

Well exactly but some people do have issues with them and they should find out why that happens.

My biggest issue is getting them all at once, they should be spread out more and let your body adjust IMO. I'm no scientist but in my chemical experience a ton of drugs in your body at once wrecks havoc with your system.

Farking Canuck: from celebrities.

Not even celebrities.  Jenny McCarthy has never produced an entertainment product or other project that anyone could realistically enjoy, without getting totally naked and posing suggestively.  She's not a celebrity, she's a former masterbation aide that thinks she's better than that because something's wrong with her kid.

It works because of herd immunity, which only works if other people do their part. And yes, most intelligent people do know that they're not 100% effective. I'm glad we both agree on that point.

2014-04-18 01:56:37 PM
They're not perfect so we should stop using them.  Let's go back to virgin sacrifice and may I suggest we start with anti-vaxxers?

I guees it would depend on the industry. Some are very proud of their "sooner is better than perfect" culture. But I digress....

MasterAdkins: Was anyone assuming they were 100% effective?

Just the "I believe the guvmit" vaxxers who attack anyone who questions vaccines

If vaccines truly were safe and totally effective...the US Government would not have billions set aside to compensate victims injured and killed from bad vaccines.

Your Hind Brain: I guees it would depend on the industry. Some are very proud of their "sooner is better than perfect" culture. But I digress....

The only way you will ever have a "perfect" vaccine is if humanity somehow develops nanomachines that can adapt a vaccine to each and every individual person they are injected into.

Otherwise, you're still going to have reduced effectiveness, reduced uptake, and even vaccine failure in certain persons.

2014-04-18 01:58:37 PM
Subby, vaxxer vs. anti-vaxxer is not nonsense; It is equivalent to ignorance vs. reality. If a group of strident uninformed people have a dangerous and incorrect point of view, it does not make you a 'vaxxer' to point out that they are wrong.

Asking honest questions about vaccines from ignorance or concern is quite different than what you're doing, which is asking loaded questions and concern trolling for an agenda. You're not "questioning" vaccines or practices - you're promoting an agenda by JAQing off.

FloridaFarkTag: If vaccines truly were safe and totally effective...the US Government would not have billions set aside to compensate victims injured and killed from bad vaccines.

Which no one ever said they were 100% safe and 100% effective - but the risk of an adverse event is less than the chance of you being struck by lightning. The Vaccine Injury Compensation Court was set up with a reduced level of evidence for the plantiff to prove harm from a vaccine adverse event, and to eliminate the amount of frivelous lawsuits which created a public health crisis in the 70s and 80s by driving manufacturers away from making vaccines.

The Vaccine Injury Court cases are often misquoted or even openly lied about by Anti-Vaccine advocates to scare people to their position.

If we are sacrificing virgins, there are plenty of them to choose from. Redditt Atheists subredditt is full of them! Plus, we can sell their fedoras to pay for it

Ditto, i'm 100% immune vs everything I've been vaccinated for, and considering how much that is it's a REALLY good thing. While in the military i recieved all the usual plus plague battery 1 - 3 and anthrax vaccines. Although I'm reminded that the anthrax one wears off after a while and was probably worthless to begin with.

Hey, don't joke. The use of Fedora and neckbeard-only sexual education in schools has the potential to completely eliminate HIV in the United States.
