Sure.
It has nothing to do with the economic situation of many women and couples being untenable for raising a child.

The federal data behind the report show that over the past seven years, the number of live births per 1,000 women between ages 15 and 29 in America has plunged 9 percent.

A normal article would be pleased about the reduction in teen pregnancy.

The real problem isn't so much that they are getting "dogs" instead of children, but that so may of them (that I've seen) are getting these baby-sized yip dogs instead of full sized dogs like collies or shepherds. It's as if they actually want babies, but without all the maintenance.
Strange.

Are they choosing dogs over babies, or are the choosing dogs over having 4 cats?

Call it, Sterilization via Puppy Dog.

Ladies, It's a real turn off for you to be a keeper of a Dog.   A cat not so much.
It makes some of us think you have high emotional nurturing needs.
and for the larger dogs,  we think you are  F**ing them.

The reason a cat is not a deal breaker is that if the
cat doesn't like you as a guest it just leaves the room.  Plus
the litter box is just a box, and not a side yard waste dump.

I've always hated dating women with dogs.  You always end up staying at their place because of the dog, They always have a set schedule because of the dog.  They always have to arrange boarding if you want to go out of town.

Cats?  Put down some extra bowls of water, extra bowls of food, fill up a spare litter box, and get on the plane to Vegas.

This is A LOT of the people I know.  I'm in my mid-20s.  While there are a few people who have kids, a lot of them decided to have dogs first.  And some people have just had the dogs and have forgotten about the kids.  And then there's me and a couple other people I know, who decided to get cats instead of dogs.  So here I am, a mid-20s cat lady with 4 cats and a husband, and we have no plans to have children anytime soon.

/who needs kids, I was woken up at 4am by a cat who wanted me to watch him take a dump
//and then a couple hours later to feed the bastards

I don't know why it stopped at 29, but all the census related things that I read, all considered child bearing age for women to start at 15 (I believe ended at 45). That's the child bearing age of a woman, reported as a matter of fact way.

This. Though dealing with anyone regularly on a personal level with dogs can become tedious. A lot of dog owners seem to become very dog-centric in every aspect of life, even to the point of being unreasonable. I can see why it can be so appealing for those who feel the need for children. Same messes and regularly destroyed property. Same assumption that everyone else thinks your dog is cute or that people want to hear about it all the time. Same feelings of shock when guests or friends don't want to interact with the dog. Same anger at others who don't like dogs and feel anyone who doesn't love their dog is personally insulting them.

My roomate always manages to date guys that want to have a kid a month after they start dating eventhough she pretty much said she never wants to have kids after raising her brothers. The last nutbar already had a 6 month old and his friends were talking about her and him having another. The one thing he had going for him is he had a good job unlike the others. When she asked what I thought about it I told her to "Eject Mavrick!!!"

As a woman that lives alone with her pug and has no plans for children.. am I the only person that doesn't feel like it fills a "child-sized" hole? I've had dogs all my life and it just feels comfortable to come home to one/take care of one. Dogs aren't children; they are animals and should be treated like one. My pug is crate trained and gets plenty of walks and doggy day care once a week, since I work/go to school full time. If you begin to let your dog interfere with your social/love life, then you're really not treating it like a dog anymore.

2014-04-18 12:02:41 PM
If the women I work with that go completely ape shiat over their dogs are any indication, the world is better off with them raising a dog than one or more humans.

Watch that number drop A LOT more when a non surgical/non condom form of birth control is invented for men. I'd bet that a healthy percentage of children born both inside and out of marriage is due to females giving the impression they're on birth control and either legitimately forgetting/messing up or deliberately deceiving the male. The line for a male birth control pill/shot is gonna be miles long.

My husband and I got a dog, but he had some physical and behavioral issues that meant that he wasn't good with kids.  When we got pregnant, we talked to the vet and his trainer and we all agreed that he wouldn't be trustworthy with a baby, so we found a great rescue that placed him in a home with an older couple that didn't have children.  It was one of the hardest days of our lives to take him to his new home, but he was happy, and we got updates on him for the first year.  We are waiting until the kids are older before we decide to take on another dog (my husband is allergic to cats), but in the meantime, we have two pet rats that have made great pets.

I'd question the claim that you have any guarantee that your kids will carry anything other than your genes into the future, and that goes double, triple, and so forth, for grandkids, great grandkids, and so on. People aren't political copies of their parents, after all. (And thank goodness for that, or nothing would ever change.)

I'd also point out that memes don't require genes. If I want to spread my ideas around, I just need to make good arguments for them to other people.

I would never say that your choices are invalid, but I'm getting a bit of a feeling that you don't quite feel that mine are. Believe me, I think that it's awesome that you think of your children as a legacy and I honestly hope that works out for you, but that kind of legacy doesn't really interest me.

I'm totally with you.  A healthy, well-trained dog doesn't need to be attended like a baby-- it doesn't replace having a child.

I adopted a racing dog to have a running partner and roommate.  The dog understands where to go for biological breaks, doesn't make noise after dark and is WAY more cooperative than any baby I've met.

heh, I see so many of my friends (and hear of other's stories) that once they get married, they get a dog (or cat, but usually a dog of some sort) and then they post a picture of their dog EVERY day on FB, etc...Okay, almost every day.

And then once they have kids, of course the kids get posted to FB and then they start hating the fact that they have a dog.

Example (a status from a friend):

I am THISCLOSE to opening up the door and letting my dog run away. A 4 yr old dog should not be pooping in the house, eating trash, eating 1500 pacifiers, eating anything we accidentally leave on the counter ( see a pattern here?), running away, growling at oldest son (2 years old), and have more expensive haircuts than me! I am going to SCREAM!!!!

Me, being single, see even some single women doing the whole dog (animal) thing.  Getting a dog and being all about that dog, etc...and then wondering why no one is dating them.  *shrugs*

/one day I'll be married and may have to deal with this but for now...no pets!

Up until age 35, they can safely get pregnant and have children.  After 35, the risks for birth defects increase.  Halle Berry just had a child recently, and she's in her 40s.

And If your are over the reproductive years and single by all means get a CANINE.

Possibly, but as long as they get out routinely for walks, they should be okay.
