The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints openly practices polygamy on the YFZ Ranch, as well as in the twin border towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona. Critics of the sect say girls are forced into "spiritual" marriages with older men and sexually abused.

Sect members have denied that any sexual abuse takes place.

Some cults are just more popular than others. America's most popular cult is a slave religion, founded on top of another slave religion.

They just happen to be more popular due to some clever marketing.

Can he prove that. I mean: Can Cliven Bundy prove that he isn't a pedophile going after young girls? Maybe Cliven Bundy can prove he doesn't have a strong attraction to young boys?

Hey, I'm just asking questions here. Does, or does not, Cliven Bundy have proof that he is not a pedophile?

Cults have some distincitive characteristics, though, that make them more psychologically damaging, outside of how stupid their beliefs are.

Things like:
*Isolating themselves from outside influences
*Demanding self-sacrifice for the sake of the cult leadership
*Extreme social punishments for deviating from message

Those can be enormously harmful to people, in ways raising your children to believe in a deity that doesn't exist aren't.

Bullshiat. If it was true that America doesn't like cults or pedophile cult leaders then why is Waco brought up all the damn time by the paramilitary movement.

Unless they actually do support cults and oediphiles.

Warren Jeffs is an asshole. This could have all been taken care of before they even BUILT that ranch. Phoenix New Times was covering the FLDS stories for at least five years before anyone remembered to give a shiat. Corruption, graft, underage brides, boys being forced into exile, high incidents of rare birth defects, these were all covered, but nobody listened.

That said, the Texas Supreme Court were 100% right about the authorities having no cause to storm the place. That phone call bullshiat and they knew it.

We're lucky it didn't turn into another Waco. That church was designed to be a fortified position. I saw that before they even finished the compound...
There's no need for the fence, those towers on the corners are great locations for shooters, and the building could hold a ton of people.

I watched Sons of Perdition (new window) on Netflix - it was pretty damn depressing.  They basically ruin the lives of any male children who don't toe the line and kick them out with very little skills to handle life outside the fold.  The most depressing thing I took from it was that I swore that if they got a call saying that all was forgiven they would go back in a second.

I was fully expecting that.

The other possibility was Jeffs and his top men just disappearing.  I have a Mormon coworker in the "normal" LDS who thought he was being persecuted and railroaded.  I could easily have seen him being absorbed into the mainstream Mormon community.

Most mainstream LDS people don't like Jeffs though. I also have a friend who is a polyg, lives on his own with his family, none of this FLDS crap, and HE hates Jeffs... Of course, a lot of people are torn on who is the sleaziest: Warren Jeffs, or that Flora Jessop chick who sticks her mug in front of a camera whenever she gets the chance. She's slimy enough, people might root for Jeffs just to spite her. I was glad to see Jeffs caught, he's a piece of shiat.

The real problem is that this is the West. People idolize outlaws here... The Nevada thing didn't really surprise me. Hell, I grew up in Idaho, and THIS guy was on the loose. He was poaching and killed two game wardens, people would give him food, supplies and shelter when he was on the run.

The call tuned out to be bullshiat, but did the authorities or did they not find out that (for example) 18 year olds were the mothers of 2 year olds, 20 year olds the mothers of five year olds, etc.?

And business with the congenital birth defects is not made up, either.  There were about twenty cases of fumarase deficiency known in the whole world, until doctors found another twenty-some cases inside the FLDS.  This situation is exacerbated by the fact that the trait entered the community through their founding prophet's family, and those folks don't get kicked out the way the majority of other young men do--they have actually been working to concentrate the fumarase deficiency gene within the FLDS.

Although, to be fair, the ATF were acting like thugs. They could have picked up Koresh any time when he was in town and spared all that mess, but nooooo, they wanted to show off to the US what big dicks they had by raiding the Branch Davidian Complex.

The point about the call is that by going in on a call they were pretty sure was fake, it's the equivalent of stop-and-frisk, warrantless wiretaps or racial profiling. I don't mind what they did, but that's not how our laws were written, and regardless of the final outcome, I think it's an important right to protect, and it needs to be applied equally. It shouldn't be OK just because we don't like the guy they applied it to.

And I didn't say that the birth defects thing was made up. I pointed out that this was covered before people could be bothered to be outraged. I stated that I can't stand Flora Jessop, but that's not where the birth defect story came from. That was from Phoenix New Times, which has done a great job of covering this from the beginning.

Fire is very unpredictable and can move rediculously fast.
Ever watch the video of the Bradford City Stadium fire? It looks like it starts off in the tiny back corner of a small section of ground level bleachers. Fans were literally only fifty feet from the safety of the unfenced field.

56 people still died.
