These pigs wanna blow my house down, head underground to the next town
They get mad when they come to raid my pad and I'm out in the 9-deuce cad
Yes, I'm the pirate, pilot of this ship if I get with the ultraviolet dream
Hide from the red light beam, now do you believe in the unseen?

You'd think that by now, that with a little planning you could completely conceal your grow. First, invest in a good insulation job to eliminate any abnormal heat signature outside the home. And second, they make LED grow lights now. Use those. It would keep the cops from using electric bills to find you. And LEDs don't put off the same amount of heat as incandescents.

This. I would totally use LEDs if I was going to get into the business (which I'm not). If LEDs are too expensive, buy fewer and motorize them on tracks. I would be far, far more worried about being tracked through electricity consumption, not to mention having to pay for all that electricity in the first place.

Is there a way to grow off grid? With solar, wind or generators you would think that would be feasible

well considering the power draw of modern LED grow lights it is probably more than doable. the big ones are like 188watts compared to 1000watt HPS or Metal Halide. and they dont get hot like the HPS or MH lights so venting isn't as big a deal or an issue at all

It depends on how much weed you wanted to grow. I've been in a legal grow house for medicinal cannabis and they were running a a 6,000 watt flowering room and a 3,000 watt veg room with a separate 1000 watt mother and clone room. If it was just some dude growing for himself and his buddies he could easily get by using two 600 watt switchable ballasts for veg and then flowering and a 300 watt mother and clone room and then the 6 inch centrifugal fan and a climate controller and some other fans, there you're talking only like 1600 watts total.

No, they sure don't. But they still get incredibly hot, hot enough to boil water.  They may use less wattage than incandescents, but they still waste a hell of a lot of that energy as heat.  Ever wonder why the new LED bulbs have giant farking aluminum heatsinks on em?

this is odd as i just changed many incandescent bulbs for LED bulbs. All of the incandescent would heat up the fixtures they were in. So much that you could not take the glass off or touch the bulb to remove it with out waiting for it to cool. the LEDs i can walk up and touch them and remove them while they are on and have been on for hours

In the infrared picture the hottest LED was 89 oC in the 2nd picture and 87 oC in the first picture. The CFLs, incandescents, and halogens were all over 100 oC. Unless you are living above 10,000 ft, water is not boiling for the LEDs. Still hot as hell though.

To answer the question, c) gangs of geeks and their infrared drones. Private citizens are not bound by the 4th Amendment--at all, not even a little tiny bit--the way police are.

Gyrfalcon: To answer the question, c) gangs of geeks and their infrared drones. Private citizens are not bound by the 4th Amendment--at all, not even a little tiny bit--the way police are.

Consider this:  Private citizen with a bug up their posterier goes flying around looking for "hot" houses.  With his little infrared camera equipped drone, he finds a place that is hot like a grow house.  So he anonymously calls the police and says he thinks the house at 1313 Mockingbird Lane is growing dope.  Police think it's a credible tip, so they check with the utility company, and see they've run up some serious electric bills.  They do some surveillance, get their probably cause for the warrant, and bust the operation.

Now, it would have been illegal for the police to do it themselves, because the Supreme Court has ruled that the police can't use infrared like that.

So now what is to stop them from doing it anyway and claiming they got an anonymous tip?

It's something called "parallel construction" and apparently that's how sensitive information that should never be used to get a warrant because it violates the Fourth Amendment is used to bust people.  The NSA intercepts a domestic call, informs the Special Operations Group, and the DEA tells the state troopers to check a certain vehicle traveling down a certain road at a certain time.  They pull the car over, end up searching it, find drugs, and then lie to the court about the ultimate source of the information that led to the car being pulled over.  Well, the troopers don't know, they just got an "anonymous tip".  Except it wasn't really anonymous.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/05/us-dea-sod-idUSBRE97409R20 13 0805

So what's to stop them from doing the very same thing with FLIR-equipped drones?

2014-04-19 02:15:29 AM
Should have used LEDs and better insulation.

HID sucks, T5 sucks, we've got white LEDs pumping well past 150 lumens per watt (200+ in case of the MK-R) and with superior wavelength output versus fluorescent, we're talking almost perfect emulation of blackbody radiation.

Don't believe me?

dittybopper: So now what is to stop them from doing it anyway and claiming they got an anonymous tip?

Nothing....but because Anonymous Citizen is already doing the work, they don't need to. There's no need to be paranoid when nosy neighbors and busybody do-gooders are allowing the cops to not break the law.

A few kiddie-diddlers have been caught by hackers who then vanish into the Internet with a pat on the head to hack another day, nevermind that the script-kiddies came upon the dirty pics while scavenging for credit card numbers. And these FLIR pirates are no different. What they are doing is flat illegal--but if they can hand off a few illegal grow operations to the cops, the police will be more than happy to look the other way and let them do all the heavy lifting (running the drones, taking the chances with trigger-happy gangsters) and accepting the "anonymous tips".

The convoluted scenario you propose is entirely plausible and probably true; but just as plausible and much less convoluted is the cops just accepting geeks with cameras who need the police to overlook their transgressions for a few high-resolution pictures the fuzz couldn't afford otherwise. The two concepts aren't mutually exclusive.
