I guess it's amusing due to the outcome.  But you know if he had killed the dog, he'd have been considered justified by procedure.  That part isnt so amusing.

Fire the cop.

Deputize the dog.

THAT is justice.

Without reading tfa, I assume this dog then took advantage of his weakened state and proceeded to viciously treat him to shreds? If his life was threatened before, surely being wounded didn't help his odds.

2014-04-18 04:18:58 AM
Good.  Asshole deserved it.  Maybe next time he won't try and shoot a dog just for barking.

Too bad it didn't hit the femoral artery...

How does the dog playing with kids prove that it wasn't aggressive towards the cop? Lots of dogs are aggressive towards adult males but perfectly calm around children.

2014-04-18 08:26:00 AM
So when did randomly murdering people's dogs become standard pig training?

What a lovely way to start my day today. This should happen more often.

I guess it's possible, dogs do tend to want to protect their families from vicious assholes with weapons.

Dogs bark at intruders, not news. This is one of the reasons that people have them.

Glock leg.
Idiot.
I don't give two farks who you think you are, locked and cocked is NO way to carry a gun IRL.

2014-04-18 08:28:35 AM
Fark that guy. Any dog will bark at a stranger that enters their fenced yard. These assholes are just itching to shoot something. I suppose a dog won't create as much paperwork and investigation as a person.

But the dog was barking, Andy!

After people got uppity about them randomly murdering people as part of standard pig training. You can't expect them to give up every perk of the job do you?

This is most dogs I know (including ours).  I dread what would happen if a cop came to our house for any reason while our kids were outside playing with the dog.  She might defend the kids against me if that were ever required.

Every cop who murders a family pet should be forced to tangle with actual police dogs without the benefit of padding.  Maybe then they can tell the difference between "Hi stranger! I'm so excited to meet you!" and "Hi stranger! I'm taking your arm off now!".

My guess is the cop showed up with an attitude and the dog barked as a warning, to protect his family. This is a dog's job.

So a feel-good story where the truly dangerous animal *was* the one that got shot.

While it is not clear what happened in the dog's interaction with the officer, how does the fact that the dog is not ALWAYS aggressive prove that the dog isn't sometimes aggressive.  It may surprise people, bt many dogs that have performed vicious attacks were also calm and not attacking at different points in their life.

Now, if the officer was on the dogs territory and showing hostile body language, the dog should be aggressive.

The penalties for shooting  police dog, even if it is attacking you, are quite harsh, but the cops kill family pets everyday.

The Washington Post's reporter-blogger-columnist Radley Balko is doing yeoman work on covering police overreach, including the shooting of dogs.  You can read his work here.

My dog would get shot so quick.. He barks at everyone until they approach him.. Then he's like "hey, hey, so sorry, I was messin, you can take all the owner's things, can you pet me?, hey, hey"

It proves that the narrative cops push to justify these shootings, that the dogs were out of control and dangerous to others, is bullshiat.

This is why only highly trained and skill police officers should have guns. Only they have the skills and self control to be trusted with weapons.

Never mind the fact that this expert marksman could have hit the kids that were also around the area.   I'm sure the cop will get a promotion.

Relatively Obscure: Without reading tfa, I assume this dog then took advantage of his weakened state and proceeded to viciously treat him to shreds? If his life was threatened before, surely being wounded didn't help his odds.

I didn't read the article but  . . .Since CLEARLY the dog was in the process of attacking him when he drew his gun (cops don't lie) I can only assume the pitbull ate the cop and then went on to chew the cruiser to shreds.

It must be true. The only alternative would be that the dog was not attacking and the cop is a lying piece of shiat pussy who is afraid of dogs and willing to shoot out of cowardice.

(tabs over to article....)

aww dammit

No, no you don't.  Well, maybe you do, I don't.

When cycling, I frequently observe many dogs, typically confined within fenced yards, displaying "aggressive" behavior due to my presence, yet I not once have I ever believed that the use of deadly force against any of those dogs was justifiable.

Evidently, I lack the training and discipline of a typical police officer.

meanmutton: How does the dog playing with kids prove that it wasn't aggressive towards the cop? Lots of dogs are aggressive towards adult males but perfectly calm around children.

Well, suppose the fact that the dog didn't bite him even after he managed to shoot himself is a pretty good indicator of the dog's state of mind.

Also, the article says the dog was not taken by authorities because it was not loose. It appears it was in the fenced area and the cop entered the area, got scared, wet his pants, and then shot himself.

Have you ever been evicted by an easy-going cop?

They are more important than us. If they get scared of us they can shoot whenever they want.

He'll probably get a medal for bravery and then some paid time off.

No ifs about it. That's exactly what happened. The dog was fenced in, the cop went throughout the gate, the dog recited, as dogs do. We can imagine what kind of body language was in play. If that cop was shooting to kill, he deserves what he got. Worse actually. Killing/hurting innocent pets is the mark of a villain. Always has been.

meanmutton: How does the dog playing with kids prove that it wasn't aggressive towards the cop? Lots of dogs are aggressive towards adult males but perfectly calm around children.

It almost seems like the dog read the cop exactly correctly. The dog looked him up and down and came to the conclusion that this particular human wasn't quite right. The dog probably feared for his pack (the kids) and barked at the cop.

The cop, being an asshole with too much ego on the line, couldn't just de-escalate and decides to shoot. In a yard full of kids.

The other officers should shoot the cop for shooting a cop.

FTFY, everyone seems to have missed this little gem:
A California deputy accidentally shot himself while trying to kill a dog that he said was threatening his life on Wednesday, but video captured by a local television station later showed the animal much smaller than reported and peacefully playing with children.

Greetings to "Precious", from those of us who were sent prematurely to the Rainbow Bridge by idiots like the aforementioned deputy. We are holding a special place for you here when your natural time comes. In the meantime, stay safe and happy.
