(Slate)   Here's how long that Portland kid would have had to urinate in the city reservoir before making it unsafe to drink   (slate.com) divider line 66

in regards to the reservoir on mount tabor eventually its going to be a closed one. They are doing construction on new parts of it to eventually put a lid on it to keep idiots from doing this sort of thing in it.

My husband and I have to drive by the construction many times and its actually right across from his work.

Found this while I was looking up when the project might be done.

I think they have about 1-2 years to go.

Urine is only sterile while it's inside your bladder.

Urine is sterile unless you have a urinary tract infection.  It doesn't magically become a threat as it leaves your body.

What if you have fap crust around your pee hole?

Hepatitis B is spread through Urine.  Although I understand that's pretty rare.

The problem is that the kid made a bunch of homeopathic urine that would cure everyone of urinating.

This would result in excess fluid retention, dangerous salt buildups, and interfere with the liver and kidney's ability to metabolize and remove toxins from the body.

So really, they had no choice in the matter but to flush it.

I would think semen is also sterile before it exits the body. The end of the urethra is home to some harmless bacteria, as is the outer surface of the pee hole, so whatever's coming out of it is not sterile by definition.

Oh, and I forgot to mention- the guy who pissed in the reservoir had been drinking, so his urine would have been more diluted than usual. Alcohol suppresses the production of antidiuretic hormone. He would have had to do it much longer than the article suggests.

ActionJoe: It's great that the article points out how stupid this whole thing was. Animals probably piss more in that each day than a human ever will. But the story had to throw in that stupid idea that if you are stuck somewhere that you can drink your piss to survive because it is 95% water. Yeah, well, that other 5% will probably degrade you faster than not drinking it at all.

It'll definitely dehydrate you. Urine is salty and drinking it is definitely  not recommended in survival situations unless you have some means of distilling it to remove the impurities.

drjekel_mrhyde: Says a woman who probably drinks bottled water all the time. Would you eat/drink human semen? Some people have no problem eating fish semen from fancy restaurants.

News flash: everyone is irrational about what they'll consume.

Let me prove it. Carefully salivate into an 8 ounce glass until its full. Now drink it.

Unless you're a more literal geek than most of us, you'll probably find yourself unable to do that, even though all that saliva came from your mouth in the first place.

It's Portland. I'm sure that some anti-vaxxer homeopath saw that video, panicked, and told everyone that dynamisation on that scale would kill everyone.

Hmm... I wonder if Portland will become a market for this:

I'm confused and have no idea how these systems work.

It's an open air storage of treated water and it's piped directly to the customer from there? Or is it held then goes off for more treatment before being piped?  What about dead animals, bird crap, pollutants, or any number of other things that could get in it?

The huge number of other things that could end up in there would worry me more. Urine? Please. If you've ever gone down on someone then you have zero reason to say a cup of piss is the sole reason to dump this much water. It doesn't matter how much it rains. People have already paid for that water to be treated and stored.

When I was in Portland a couple years ago I was walking around, half-lost, and saw a sign for Mt. Tabor... I decided to take the walk to go see the world's largest flush toilet.
I don't regret that decision.

lewismarktwo: Most people think running their dishwasher sterilizes their dishes.  Or that they are 'clean' after taking a shower.

but... I got a dishwasher that actually does have a sanitization cycle at the end cert'd to kill 99.99% of wee beasties.

Neato! I bet that cost a pretty penny. Is it cert'd to kill all that fungus growing in there too?

"Water? Never touch the stuff. Fish f*ck in it."

That's what I said:  the amount of contamination is insigniificant.

Reminds me of the Ren & Stimpey episode where Ren forces beavers to drink a lot of lemonade  so they'll pee in the lake.

As W.C. Fields put it so eloquently he never touched water because fish **** in it. But how often do you worry about Uncle Milty in your water supply?

My book on measurement, The Sizethaurus says that one part per trillion is about a jigger in Lake Superior.

One part per billion would be 1,000 times that or 25 40-ouncers in Lake Superior. But if somebody dumped a few boxes of Scotch into Lake Superior, not even the fish would notice because damn that Lake is big and deep (and the present time, pretty cold).

CO2 concentrations are measured in parts per million which is a thousand times parts per billion again but denialists claim that doubling the CO2 levels will have no effect whatsoever although in the 1890s a Swedish Noble Prize Winner to be, Svante Arrhennius did the math and concluded that the difference between the depth of the Ice Age and modern climate could be the result of a past doubling of CO2, i.e. 5-6 degrees Celsius globally for an increase of 200 ppm.

We'll see who is right in less than a century but at the moment, enjoy your ice caps, polar bears and beaches, and try to see Venice or JFK airport before you die, let alone New Orleans or London.
