So...

There's not enough hotels.  People then turn around and rent out apartments/condos.  HOA is handling it, city's actually being reasonable by SF standards, not really seeing the problem here other than "Have you considered building more hotels?"

/Don't think this'll fix the problem entirely.   Family rented out house in Harlem when visiting NYC because it was easier.

In California, cities have City Councils and counties have Boards of Supervisors. San Francisco is unique in California in that it is both a city and a county, so it has only one entity that does both jobs.

Not really, it's because of what happened south of them in the Silicon Valley. The tourism is a result of SF being a cool place to visit, but the people that live there aren't generally working at places that revolve around tourists, it's too expensive for them. SF is a yuppie tech town now.

I was on tour and the reasonably nice hotel we were supposed to be staying in Madison lost our reservations and so tour management put us up in a vastly inferior Best Western. My friend the sound guy was so angered at the change in accommodations that he took a long wet dump across the bedspread in his room and wiped himself clean with his sheets before passing out drunk and stoned in the clean twin bed in my room.

Yup. When you have an exceptionally large salary due to being in the tech or biotech industries, where would you choose to live?

San Jose and Oakland have too many gang problems (perceived or otherwise)

Marin & the North Peninsula are mostly out of your price range

Richmond is the real gang-infested Hell-hole of the area with the added bonus of living next to oil refineries that occasionally explode

East Bay is alright but already heavily developed with families that won't be moving soon, so low chances of turnover

Peninsula housing prices are way more expensive than the houses are worth.

San Francisco is doing lots of renovation focusing on condo living, has an extensive public transportation network, and has most of the culture and attractions of the Bay Area. Anything outside of San Francisco can be reached easily and cheaply via public transit.

It's pretty much a no-brainer if you're a mid-level techie.

Besides crushing cost of living, perpetually cold and gray skies, a political culture that could rival Best Korea's in insanity and vehemence, there was this need to complain about EVERYTHING. There's no cause so trivial, no use of property so private, that someone in the Bay Area can't gin up some outrage and Demand Action.

Usually because a) Shut up and b) Root Cause!

I've never done anything worse than steal the little containers of shampoo. Although there was one time before I was born where my dad got locked out of his hotel room wearing nothing but his boxers.

San Francisco is a City/County and only has a County board of Supervisors no city council.

I recently sold my home on the beachfront in venice, CA. - and I can tell you, this has become a huge problem there. More and more homeowners are vacating their homes, moving to cheaper parts of L.A., and renting their houses out by the week to Euro-trash as "party houses".
Predictably, this has made living a normal life difficult for actual people or families trying to live in those neighborhoods. It's coming to a head, and there is talk of making laws to forbid the practice.

Hotels and business suites versus apartments, rentals versus ownership, condo owners versus Civilization. It's a constant flux and as Heraclitus says, you never step into the same housing market twice.

You do not own anything permanent in this world, it's just a time share.

Not that I have anything fixed against NIMBIES. NIMBIES preserve many of the good things of this world: communities, neighbourhoods, the country side. Even rich people sometimes have their uses: Mssrs. Irving have some of the fattest deer and salmon in the Province of New Brunswick and the world. Their ownership of 1.5 million acres (or possibly 1.7 million) in New Brunswick, and another 1.5 million in Nova Scotia, and again in Maine and so forth means that forests can grow, streams can sparkle and wildlife, fish and birds live largely unmolested except when the Irvings grant permission to hunters or fishermen (and fisherwomen) to travel on their vast feudal land-holdings. This is, as Martha Stewart would acknowledge, a good thing ... at least for some thing but not others.

It is nice to see somebody give a dispassionate and balanced view of such matters from time to time.

I've worked with economists, wildlife preservers, academics, and all sorts of people, and my family tree is  pretty much conterminous with society now, so I can often see the many sides of an issue, even if American and other media usually prefers to present only two sides to every issue and to bias and slant towards one side only.

This sort of thing is vital to the productivity of an eco-system or an economy or the life and health of a great city or state. Yes, some win and some lose. But it is a law of life that many are inconvenienced for the good of the whole.

No man is an island resort. Each is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

Man without society is either a beast or a god said Aristotle. Which are you pretending to be?

Did I read their solution right? They want a 60 day minimal rental? Most SMART condo restrict it to 30 day max or it can turn into a flop house.

There was a thing in one of the NYC tabloids this week about how prostitutes are using AirBnB to avoid detection.  Basically this woman came back from vacation to find her place loaded with baby wipes and the trash filled with used condoms.  Apparently AirBnB was like "Who knew that could happen?  Whoopsie."

I don't know why anyone would want to live in SF.  Its a complete shiat hole.  Its almost as bad as LA.  Bums and their piss and shiat smells everywhere, no free parking, its impossible to drive anywhere, there is no open space or privacy and most of the folks that live there are batshiat insane.

The short term rental thing is a weird "problem."  My take is whatever the property owner wants to do with it is their business.  Now if these are rentals and it is really a renter that is further renting it out then I am all for the real owner setting whatever rules they want limiting the practice or booting out their tenant at a moments notice.

SF wouldn't be in such a crappy situation if they just let the market work, rather than interfering with insane commie ideas like rent control.

Vacant units are about twice as expensive to insure than occupied units.  Agree with you.

Eh, I can sympathize.

My NYC apt building has had issue with Airbnb renters. For whatever reason, they prop the door open to pull their luggage inside, but then never close it. It's not only a safety issue, but in the winter it let's all of the cold air inside. And then in the winter they've been smoking in the stairwell or right at the entrance to the building. So in other words, people renting for 3 or 4 days don't care about the rules, let alone basic courtesies.

At the same time, thank god someone is giving hotels competition.

my husband, 3yo, and I took a trip to Barcelona with a couple and their baby. the men went out the first night and got LIT. The other husband pissed on the wall in the room. My husband only fell asleep in his undies is the main lounge lol.
