There's still some 8 and a half months left in 2014. I'm sure USA Today will top that at some point.

For starters, there appears to be a wormhole stretching across the country that allows residents of California in 1960 to visit New York City in the year 2060.

What, the blue band? It doesn't even touch California. I guess it's not surprising someone who doesn't know the difference between California and Oregon/Washington would be confused by that graph.

See, the concept of an infographic is to helpfully spell out statistics in a visual format, which of course is easily abused (Y-coordinate skewing, etc.)

This is the opposite of that. You actually have to stare at it for a few minutes to even begin to convey what it's trying to explain.

2014-04-17 07:53:31 PM
It needs Wolf Blitzer standing in front of a 3D version of it

And what happened to all the Asians in 1970?

I'll admit if they hadn't explained it I probably would have given up without understanding the US map.  The original graph made perfect sense, though.

It's pretty obvious (at least to me) what they're trying to convey; it just looks like shiat.  It really has no business being labeled "the worst infographic of the year,"  in fact, I'm more offended by that title than the actual infographic.

You clearly spent more time on that than the NBC intern that made up that real graph.

Eh.  It makes sense without the overlay of the US maing it look geographical.  Just making the map overlay mostly transparent would help.

It's not a decent graph, but it's understandable.  And for the audience its intended, it gets the point across: Since 1960, the percentage of white Americans has decreased and the decline will only continue over the next 50 years, with most of that increase coming from Hispanic-Americans.

2014-04-17 08:57:58 PM
Oh, I wouldn't call it the worst. The Washington Post one from the other day was worse because it was outright deceptive. This one simply looks inept. It's also worth pointing out that the graph distributed by Pew is also not well designed and therefore doesn't provide a good basis for this chart.

I don't know what everyone's problem is, it's very informative with a lot of takeaways. By 2060 Florida will be 100% crazy, Asians will once again be close to the coast (and you know how good their sushi is), Manhattan will be renamed La Isla De Pendejos, and Delaware will be like that music video California Love.

Three generic pie charts would have made the point even better, I would think, to anyone with a functioning brain. "zomg the 'white' slice is getting smaller!!!one"

I get annoyed with the attempt to integrate maps/images of the United States when otherwise very broad demographic data (with no geographic specificity) is presented. This is one of the uglier ones, but I see similar crap to this all the time.

It's somewhat poor of a graph. But I'm sorry if I disappoint the majority, I figured out the graph pretty quick. The entirety of the article submitted is content filler (page clicks), and this thread is finger pointing because why not?

I'm only in here to complain about the meh material provided. I'd rather comment on one of those Buzzfeed featured partner pages to discuss how terrible they are, but Drew shrewdly disabled featured partner commenting.

It seems easy to understand to me.  The only confusing part is having to do math to determine that in 2060, 2.1M Canadians of some 'other' race will invade the U.S. via Maine.  And also that 8% of the people living in the U.S. in 2010 were missing.

Technically Hispanic isn't a race. It's a mix of white and Asian or in some cases all Asian or a mix of white and Asian and black depending on the country.

The way I see it, making a good Excel spreadsheet is more of a science, whereas making a good PowerPoint presentation is more of an art.  Excel takes care of a lot of the data-presentation details for you (charts, AutoFormat, etc.) and lets you focus more on technical details (and frequently makes it obvious when you do something wrong), whereas PowerPoint gives you a very freeform canvas for presenting information and thus many more ways to shoot yourself in the foot.

The Asians did vanish in the 70s, according to the graph, which is due to the outline of the US not extending high enough.

So it's a bit of a joke there, eh?

In any case, it is not just about poor choice, it is about that fact that the graph does not show all the data.

The maker of that graphic will inevitably go into climatology.

2014-04-17 09:49:54 PM
I made this infographic as part of my job at USA Today. I work from home and received the assignment just yesterday morning. There was no time to send it to the political expediency team, because the team leader who is a Pacific Islander was in Maine at the time attending a racism awareness seminar, along with the technical lead who is Asian.

My working partner (we do pair programming during the month of April), who is from Guatemala and is here on a witness protection assignment, called in sick although I think she was probably doing the books for her uncle's landscaping business in New York.

My best friend, who is African American and whose name is Sh'Qua'n D'stamb'odo Nijeme Niemogo and is from my hometown of Washington D.C., was on Capitol Hill representing our company at the annual press conference methodology workgroup meeting webinar council briefing.

So, I was forced to finish this all by myself on the beach in Kapalua, Maui this morning with no oversight or editing.

So if dem buggahs wen get kronk and like beef, den they stay coming heah an we tell um why dis kine map ting wen come all buss up. Ey brah you like fix um den fine, ah. Den when you finish we come put um back bumbye. Know what I mean?

anfrind: Zulu_as_Kono: Killer Cars: Teufelaffe: I get that it's a poorly designed graph, but I'm failing to see what's "racially insensitive" about it.

I think Gawker, and any of their satellite/offshoot/whatever-you-call-them sites have a daily quota of submissions that invoke progressive outrage.

Seriously, are some of you people functionally retarded?

Bad graphics are "racially insensitive" and fuel progressive outrage?  Or are you saying Asians and liberals have more highly refined aesthetic sensibilities when it comes to visualized data?

The headline of TFA is "NBC News Creates A Racially Insensitive, Time-Traveling Map of America".

Although of all the things in TFA for one to obsess over, that seems like an odd choice.

I'm pretty sure that's gawker making a joke.

As in the chart both implies that California in in the 1960s and traveling to New York (in the 2060s) is time travel, and it's racially insensitive because it implies segregation by showing whites only in the south followed by blacks and then hispanics as you move north.

Now there is an offensive graph.

Dude doesn't even know how to butcher a body (hint: the loin is not the muscle down the back, it is the psoas--i.e. the muscle that runs through your loins).  However, it's probably not going to be as good as this guy thinks, since while in cows it's very tender, we use that muscle far more in bipedal locomotion so human loin would probably be best off stewed.  Also, you'll only get CJD from eating brains if the person you are eating had CJD so avoid Brits and New Guineans and you're probably fine to enjoy the subtle taste and delicate texture of brain.  And sure, the liver does store Vitamin A, but how much liver are you planning to eat in one sitting?  A human liver would feed half the restaurant, and individual slices would be fine, especially with well-carmelized onions.

That's what most reasonable people would see at first glance, and is why it's a bad graph.

The trick is to notice that the surface the cat is sitting ON is labelled as 13 feet 6 inches. The bottom of the graph (the dotted line) is the top of the truck.

It would maybe help a bit if the line continued under the cat, but probably not enough.  Because yeah. That totally looks like a 14 foot tall cat, particularly given the placement of other text nearby.

The Universe - some information to help you live in it.

Population: None.
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

By 2060, most "Hispanics" other than some really dark-skinned people will be considered "white," just as Italians are now (they weren't in 1915), and most of them won't speak any Spanish. So confusing graph is not only poorly designed; it's meaningless.

If you think that's a decent graph, you need to lay off the beer and head onto vodka, cause there's no hope for you.

It's not a decent graph, but it's understandable.  And for the audience its intended, it gets the point across: Since 1960, the percentage of white Americans has decreased and the decline will only continue over the next 50 years, with most of that increase coming from Hispanic-Americans.

Technically Hispanic isn't a race. It's a mix of white and Asian or in some cases all Asian or a mix of white and Asian and black depending on the country.

Forgetting Spain, Portugal and the Americas?

Plenty of Hispanics there with no Asian ethnicity.

I think he meant Native Americans. Those are of Asian descent, they're not called "Indians" for nothing!

I thought they were called Indians because it took a while for Columbus to figure out that he hadn't landed in India?

You're worse at trolling than Farker letrole. And that's saying something.

It's cute that you can mistake mockery for trolling.

Yes, but there are plenty of Hispanics without any Asian ethnicity. Like the Spanish.

And, go back far enough and we're all African anyway.

RobSeace: mr_a: Am I just reading this thing sideways, or is it telling me that at this moment the US population is made up of 0% people of Asian ethnicity or race? 0%

There sure seem to be a lot of people hanging around that seem to be Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Vietnamese making up that 0%.

So are the 50 people that are always in line in front of me at the post office some sort of worm-hold singularity? Should I call that deGrasse Tyson guy next time I see one?

With a graph like that, it just makes me wonder EVEN MORE why we can't ever get any Popeye's Chicken restaurants on the white side of town.

I'm sorry, but it's true! Popeye's is ALWAYS in the city, usually on MLK Boulevard in most places, and it's NEVER, EVER in the suburbs. Why is that? Don't the executives at Popeye's think that middle-class white and Asian people would enjoy some fried chicken, red beans & rice, or other Popeye's delicacies? Dammit, Popeye's Chicken!!! You're there, on the other side of town TEASING me, TEMPTING me. You're ALWAYS in the worst, most violent parts of the city. You're on the street EVERYONE knows to be the place to find drug dealers and hookers. WHY? Why not a nice little Popeye's in the burbs? What's the problem with putting one of your restaurants in a part of town where pale-skinned people aren't risking being killed to get a little chicken?!?!

Because DAMMIT, Popeye's-- You're better than KFC. Why can't you see that and expand to places outside of the city?

And then you run ads with white people in them. What the hell? There are no white people at Popeye's! We WANT to be at Popeye's, but most of us know that parking our car at a restaurant on MLK Blvd and walking the distance from car to restaurant is a good way to get shot for being in gang territory.

WHY DO YOU TEASE US, POPEYE'S?

They used blue for black people.

Nope.  First of all, that bit about Italians not being considered white in 1915 is bullshiat.  If you want to say they weren't considered Anglo-Saxon, well yeah.  That was true then and is true now.

Second, Latinos will still be visually distinct from Anglo whites, in that the majority of them will either have significant African or Indian admixture, or both.

I'd be very careful about this line of thought.

This. They're always in the "bad" part of town, almost always filthy, generally ran by people who just don't give a fark, but god DAMN that is some deliciousness for fast food.

Not seeing racial insensitivity, am seeing lots of intelligence insensitivity, both in the original and in Gawker. Is their mission to just repost every tumblr and facebook fw:fw:fw:re:fw:OMG?

rugman11: In the maker's defense, he/she said that the intent was to evoke the following graphic which, as a histogram, makes the point much more clearly than a line graph.

OK, I can see the homage, but the Florida graph is bad and its maker should feel bad. Bad intern. There's a reason the original used bars, not lines.

Nix n' Nixon sitting in a tree...

On the West Coast Popeye's seems to have expanded well beyond its usual ghetto demographic, maybe that's where all the white folk commercials come from. I'm still waiting for White Castle to show up, though....

Hey now.  considering how many Chinese restaurants there are in Bangor and points north (per capita), I can believe that there's a shiat-ton of Asians up here.

I mean, Christ, i live in a Podunk town in northern Maine and there are TWO Chinese restaurants here.  We don't' have ANY other ethnic foods up here.  but we have Chinese restaurants coming out of our ass.

Relatively speaking, I'm sure.  But still.

/I really have no idea what the people who came up with that "infographic" were smoking.....
