SquiggsIN: I've tried seeing where this is offensive and i'm just not seeing it.

No one is offended. It's just very poorly executed and doesn't clearly show the data it's supposed to show.

It seems easy to understand to me.  The only confusing part is having to do math to determine that in 2060, 2.1M Canadians of some 'other' race will invade the U.S. via Maine.  And also that 8% of the people living in the U.S. in 2010 were missing.

There are a lot more Asians in Maine than I would have thought... or at least there will be in 2060. What do Asian Americans know about Maine that I don't!?!

Smeggy Smurf: I see nothing wrong with it but then I'm not looking to be offended.  It must suck always looking for something to offend you.  It's like being a religious fundie finding sinners everywhere and screaming about it.  No, at least the fundies can claim mental illness.

The thought behind the graph was nice, but the execution was, well, non-existent.

The link to the actual Pew Research article is pretty good though.  Most of the info is already a known, but it's an interesting read anyway.

What this map says to me is "Whites in the U.S. should fear displacement". The outliers fitting inside the lines was unimportant because the image was not directed at them.

If you think that's a decent graph, you need to lay off the beer and head onto vodka, cause there's no hope for you.

It's not a decent graph, but it's understandable.  And for the audience its intended, it gets the point across: Since 1960, the percentage of white Americans has decreased and the decline will only continue over the next 50 years, with most of that increase coming from Hispanic-Americans.

Technically Hispanic isn't a race. It's a mix of white and Asian or in some cases all Asian or a mix of white and Asian and black depending on the country.

Race is a stupid concept anyhow, isn't it?

I don't know what everyone's problem is, it's very informative with a lot of takeaways. By 2060 Florida will be 100% crazy, Asians will once again be close to the coast (and you know how good their sushi is), Manhattan will be renamed La Isla De Pendejos, and Delaware will be like that music video California Love

I take it you haven't been to Delaware.  There wouldn't be much of a change.

skinink: I never understood why people thought out of all the MS Office programs, PowerPoint is the hardest to learn. It's all charts and graphics (but don't use sound or animations if you know better). I could never understand how someone can master Excel but fail at PowerPoint.

The way I see it, making a good Excel spreadsheet is more of a science, whereas making a good PowerPoint presentation is more of an art.  Excel takes care of a lot of the data-presentation details for you (charts, AutoFormat, etc.) and lets you focus more on technical details (and frequently makes it obvious when you do something wrong), whereas PowerPoint gives you a very freeform canvas for presenting information and thus many more ways to shoot yourself in the foot.

The Asians did vanish in the 70s, according to the graph, which is due to the outline of the US not extending high enough.

So it's a bit of a joke there, eh?

In any case, it is not just about poor choice, it is about that fact that the graph does not show all the data.

The maker of that graphic will inevitably go into climatology.

2014-04-17 09:49:54 PM
I made this infographic as part of my job at USA Today. I work from home and received the assignment just yesterday morning. There was no time to send it to the political expediency team, because the team leader who is a Pacific Islander was in Maine at the time attending a racism awareness seminar, along with the technical lead who is Asian.

My working partner (we do pair programming during the month of April), who is from Guatemala and is here on a witness protection assignment, called in sick although I think she was probably doing the books for her uncle's landscaping business in New York.

My best friend, who is African American and whose name is Sh'Qua'n D'stamb'odo Nijeme Niemogo and is from my hometown of Washington D.C., was on Capitol Hill representing our company at the annual press conference methodology workgroup meeting webinar council briefing.

So, I was forced to finish this all by myself on the beach in Kapalua, Maui this morning with no oversight or editing.

So if dem buggahs wen get kronk and like beef, den they stay coming heah an we tell um why dis kine map ting wen come all buss up. Ey brah you like fix um den fine, ah. Den when you finish we come put um back bumbye. Know what I mean?

The headline of TFA is "NBC News Creates A Racially Insensitive, Time-Traveling Map of America".

Although of all the things in TFA for one to obsess over, that seems like an odd choice.

I'm pretty sure that's gawker making a joke.

As in the chart both implies that California in in the 1960s and traveling to New York (in the 2060s) is time travel, and it's racially insensitive because it implies segregation by showing whites only in the south followed by blacks and then hispanics as you move north.

Other than them possibly going for a joke about Asians being confined to Maine, I don't get the racist angle either.  I mean, it's a terrible graph, but I'm not seeing racism in it.

TheOther: Dammit, I thought that said 70% 'Back Pain' rather than Huckabee or Romney...that would have been funnier than Palin.

That was my first thought too...

Speaking of bad graphs though I remember the graph that at first glance seems to show a 14 foot tall house cat "for scale."  It actually doesn't, but if you have to study the graph that hard, it could stand some improvement.
