Urk.

Looks fine to me.

NBC News, you're no Fox News.

2014-04-17 07:32:55 PM
There's still some 8 and a half months left in 2014. I'm sure USA Today will top that at some point.

For starters, there appears to be a wormhole stretching across the country that allows residents of California in 1960 to visit New York City in the year 2060.

What, the blue band? It doesn't even touch California. I guess it's not surprising someone who doesn't know the difference between California and Oregon/Washington would be confused by that graph.

What part of that graph is not confusing?

See, the concept of an infographic is to helpfully spell out statistics in a visual format, which of course is easily abused (Y-coordinate skewing, etc.)

This is the opposite of that. You actually have to stare at it for a few minutes to even begin to convey what it's trying to explain.

2014-04-17 07:53:31 PM
It needs Wolf Blitzer standing in front of a 3D version of it

And what happened to all the Asians in 1970?

Not confusing at all. Wtf?

I'll admit if they hadn't explained it I probably would have given up without understanding the US map.  The original graph made perfect sense, though.

It's pretty obvious (at least to me) what they're trying to convey; it just looks like shiat.  It really has no business being labeled "the worst infographic of the year,"  in fact, I'm more offended by that title than the actual infographic.

We're not allowed to talk about that.  Let's just say that the soup was delicious.

You clearly spent more time on that than the NBC intern that made up that real graph.

2014-04-17 08:34:06 PM
Eh.  It makes sense without the overlay of the US maing it look geographical.  Just making the map overlay mostly transparent would help.

Third gen and 4 gen Hispanics are not having babies like many might think. I can bet their growth rate will slow down in 2025

Maybe I've had too many beers tonight, but if people can't figure out this graphic, then the country may as well commit suicide because the apes have already overtaken us in average intelligence.

If you think that's a decent graph, you need to lay off the beer and head onto vodka, cause there's no hope for you.

This graph wouldn't bother me so much if Alaska wasn't on it.  It really stands out, being only red and far to the left (in the past?).

It's not a decent graph, but it's understandable.  And for the audience its intended, it gets the point across: Since 1960, the percentage of white Americans has decreased and the decline will only continue over the next 50 years, with most of that increase coming from Hispanic-Americans.

2014-04-17 08:57:58 PM
Oh, I wouldn't call it the worst. The Washington Post one from the other day was worse because it was outright deceptive. This one simply looks inept. It's also worth pointing out that the graph distributed by Pew is also not well designed and therefore doesn't provide a good basis for this chart.

I don't know what everyone's problem is, it's very informative with a lot of takeaways. By 2060 Florida will be 100% crazy, Asians will once again be close to the coast (and you know how good their sushi is), Manhattan will be renamed La Isla De Pendejos, and Delaware will be like that music video California Love.

2014-04-17 08:59:32 PM
Looked clear enough to me. Replace the U.S. background with standard figure format and it looks just like any other graph showing changes in percentages over time.

In the maker's defense, he/she said that the intent was to evoke the following graphic which, as a histogram, makes the point much more clearly than a line graph.

This is entrapment.  Like part of a sobriety test you must explain the graph.

Three generic pie charts would have made the point even better, I would think, to anyone with a functioning brain. "zomg the 'white' slice is getting smaller!!!one"

I get annoyed with the attempt to integrate maps/images of the United States when otherwise very broad demographic data (with no geographic specificity) is presented. This is one of the uglier ones, but I see similar crap to this all the time.

I see nothing wrong with it but then I'm not looking to be offended.  It must suck always looking for something to offend you.  It's like being a religious fundie finding sinners everywhere and screaming about it.  No, at least the fundies can claim mental illness.

2014-04-17 09:07:17 PM
It's somewhat poor of a graph. But I'm sorry if I disappoint the majority, I figured out the graph pretty quick. The entirety of the article submitted is content filler (page clicks), and this thread is finger pointing because why not?

I'm only in here to complain about the meh material provided. I'd rather comment on one of those Buzzfeed featured partner pages to discuss how terrible they are, but Drew shrewdly disabled featured partner commenting.

2014-04-17 09:08:06 PM
Oh noez! It r a chart the underlying shape chosen for which diminishes its clarity infinitesimally for the sake of a hint of connotative artistry.

and not one of them can drive or park like a normal human being

*sigh*

I never understood why people thought out of all the MS Office programs, PowerPoint is the hardest to learn. It's all charts and graphics (but don't use sound or animations if you know better). I could never understand how someone can master Excel but fail at PowerPoint.

I'm not convinced you know what the word "offended" means.
