With how expensive rent is around here in California, I've thought about it.  If I wasn't married, I'd probably give it a go.  Although probably with a small RV instead of a van so I could stand up.  Although the van would probably be easier to find parking for without tipping people off that you were living in it.  A lot of the cities have "no overnight street parking" laws specifically to make it hard for people to live in their cars.

Doesn't WalMart allow overnight parking?  I always see semis and quite often RVs parked there.  They might object if you made it semi-permanent though.  I guess you could rotate among several and maybe a rest stop or 2.

Many do, but not any of the ones around here.  There's actually a website to check:

Roadtrek Class B Mercedes type.  Looks like one of those big Merc van.  Downside is they are not exactly cheap.  The Etrek can even run on batteries for a while, or draw power from the main engine.  No noisy generators to tip off people.  Just an idling engine.

I don't get it. Is it legal to be in the cabin while it's moving?

If it is attached to the cab, then it is fine, that is an RV... if it was towed behind, then that is a trailer and can not be occupied while being towed.

I had a full size dodge conversion van with all the creature comforts. I parked it any damn place I felt like and never had a problem. I never really lived out of it but it gave me a place to sleep off more than one bender.

It's a parade vehicle. We have one of those at the Cactus Festival every year.
It helps keep the stereotype healthy, and dumb people like this guy think its real, and then reinforce the stereotype of stupid people. Vicious circle.

Remind me to never go to Franklin TN or Franklin NC. I've been to Franklin OH and it's a redneck shiathole as well.

Update: Remind me to never go to any town/village/city named Franklin.

If you hate traffic, you don't want to be in Pigeon For that weekend or the two weekends after labor day.  Great if you love hot rods.

Franklin, NC is just up the road from me a ways. It's not a bad little place. And most everyone around here sounds like that guy to some extent, smart, stupid, whatever. It's what you grew up with and are around all the time. Jarring out of it's regular social context though.

I'm in Blairsville, GA. Work is even scarcer here :) Mainly because we're smaller than you.

Your buddy has more tolerance for Pigeon Forge than I do. The contrast between the Smokey Mountains and that pestiferous hell-hole is so very stark...

I was the one driving. Other than the Rod Run I see no reason whatsoever to go to Pigeon Forge.
