nekom: There was a cracked article not too long ago about that.  Basically said if you aren't on the top tier, you make jack shiat nothing.

In America, if you're not in WWE, or a TNA wrestler who once worked for WWE, you make shiat.

Indy wrestlers basically do it because they love wrestling.

TNA wrestlers that weren't once in WWE seem to make slightly more than indy wrestlers, but as you can see, this guy has to work at Wal-Mart, and the Knockouts didn't quit their day jobs at Hooters.

Vince owns wrestling. You don't work for him, you don't really work in wrestling... it's just a sideline gig done for the love of it.

/and TNA could have paid way more with the Panda money behind them, before Mama Carter closed the purse.

We're talking about how guys at the top get paid stacks and anyone under that gets nothing.

Though I suppose you're thinking of each major league in and of itself; I'm thinking of each top league as being the stars; anything just short of that league and you make more at WalMart.

I don't recall what the triple A minimum is ( 70k?) but I was surprised to see MLS players making as little as 30k.

And anything short of the NFL (in the U.S.) is about $17K/year. Basketball? D-League players make either $13K, $17K, or $25K.

/which is part of why people continue to go to the NCAA instead - even WITH amateurism, they STILL pay more than those leagues.

MFAWG: You guys realize all pro sports used to be like this, right?

yup there is a reason the 8 men out  were tempted into throwing the world series.

Charles Comiskey  was a notorious cheapskate and the white sox on average were the worst paid team in the league and this was long before the reserve clause was killed.

The douchebag even tried to charge the players to wash their uniforms.

Not surprised for the Jobber wrestlers getting paid jack shiat.

2014-04-17 09:03:22 PM
This is the end result of McMahon (and to a lesser degree, WCW) taking a lot of the top tier talent in the old territory system. It used to be that you could jump between territories (like from World Class in Texas to Mid-South in Memphis, etc) and still make pretty good money. There were alternatives to WWE, not the least of which was WCW. Once WCW folded, Vince ruled (and rules). Wrestlers went from multiple options to pretty much the WWE or a few of the territories left (which pay jacksquat). TNA is apparently never going to make a decent challenge and has seen the marquee talents leave (old, but still drawing). Chris Jericho is one of the few topliners to actually say that he thought WWE taking everything over would be bad for pro wrestling.

However, jobbers have never made nor never will anything approaching a decent living. That's never changed.

This shouldn't shock anyone... If you are working the indies (or whatever is left of the territories, with the new NWA), you get paid very little (0-$100 a match, and most towards the $0) unless you are a former WWE wrestler (they can make $500-$1500 a match). The reason is that the indies and NWA territories (that exist now) don't draw much at all. If they get 100 people, it's usually a good night.

TNA pay varies, but it's generally not much if you aren't a top guy. I have no idea what ROH pays, but I am guessing less than TNA.

Japan supposedly has some high paying promotions, too.

It's kind of like MMA -- if you aren't top tier UFC (or Bellator and WSOF, to an extent), you don't get paid jack shiat because the draw just isn't there.

Not really.  Probably the last match I can think of was the Terry Funk/Tommy Dreamer vs. Mick Foley/Edge match from the second ECW One Night Stand.

You know, the one that they used to relaunch ECW as the glorified developmental territory that Vince always thought it was.

Minor League players, Minor League is a team affiliated with a Major league team, are paid on a scale where the minimum for A is $1100 a month, AA is $1500 a month and the minimum for AAA is $2100 a month. If they play for an independent league or semi pro team they get paid much less.

There is a reason the higher level indie guys push their merch as much as they do.  They probably take home more in shirt sales than they do in pay.

I am a big fan of indie wrestling and go to a ton of shows.  I honestly dont know how some of those guys do it other than LOVING wrestling.  They are traveling 8-10 hours to go on second in front of a bunch of people who dont know who they are.

A big point of contention with the talent is guys who pay for their flights and hotels for Euro/Japanese or tours of an opposite coast.  This reduces the pay day and the exposure for the guys who are better performers and gives it to guys who are willing to pay to build their resumes.  Takes the meritocracy out of prestigious things like doing Europe and Japan.

machoprogrammer: This shouldn't shock anyone...

Karl Anderson of New Japan recently said he earned $600k last year. So yeah, there aren't many options outside of WWE, but they are out there.

If there's one person I trust with finances, it's Ric Flair.

For an extra fee, Willie Nelson will come out and do your taxes.

unyon: MFAWG: You guys realize all pro sports used to be like this, right?

You realize that pro wrestling isn't a sport, right?

If boxing is a sport than so is pro wrestling.
