Something tells me he might not be altogether "George Washington/Cherry Tree" truthful

You've got to nip these things it the bud.  It could end up costing the hospital pennies in soda every day if people just refilled without paying.

If you put the soda machine where I fill the cup, I am going to assume refills are free.  You save money by not tying up your staff.

The soda purveyor likely supplies the cups also, and cup inventory is how this place is charged.  Refills are probably not in the contact.  It's posted, they say.

(We have a deli near us that charges less for coffee if you bring your own cup.  Same deal: theft from the purveyor of said commodity.)

We have draconian laws for a reason, subby.

2014-04-17 01:56:35 PM
And I'll add this: a long time ago, when I worked in a movie theater, we kept an eye on people that ordered popcorn with no butter (flavoring).  We could resell their empty buckets.

You'd assume that even if, per the article, there's a sign that says "Refills are not free"?

Man also said he was busted while standing at the soda fountain before he would have even had a chance to pay.  How the fark did security know whether he was going to pay for it or not?  You'd think security would wait until after he walks off without paying.  Unless of course this was a common occurrence for the guy and they decided to catch him in the act.

Good thing we have those highly trained federal police officers to ensure that no one is stealing fountain drinks.

Maybe the VA should start issuing citations whenever they accidentally infect veterans with AIDS because they're improperly handling needles.

"A hospital spokesperson called it a "theft of government property."

"A hospital spokesperson" needs to have their face punched in hard for being so full of sh*t and hysterical.

I wonder what sort of meltdown " A hospital spokesperson" would have if he used some ice as well?

Lewis is now out of a job. According to a hospital spokesperson, signs are posted in the cafeteria informing patrons that refills aren't free. Lewis says he never noticed the signs and admits he had refilled his drink without paying on other occasions.
"As I was filling my cup up, I turned to walk off and a fella grabbed me by the arm and asked me was I going to pay for that, and I told him I wasn't aware that I had to pay for that."
Lewis says he tried to pay the $0.89 right there, but wasn't allowed to. He says he wasn't given the chance to pay the cashier either.
"I never had an option to make right what I had done wrong."

I'm calling bullshiat. So, you go to this cafateria frequently but you've never noticed the sign that everyone else seems to be aware of? He's a thief who got caught.

No one mentioned yet that all refills in the South are free? South Carolina, how disappointing.  Aside from that this is ridiculous as soda is typically the highest margin items sold by food purveyors.

I have only seen armed VA police in the hospitals, things get a little testy when Joe veteran cracks and holds syringes up to people's necks

We're talking about $0.89 for a soda..not $1.50 to $2 which is normal

apparently people were irritated enough to catch him in the act because it's probably not even easy to get in an out of the drink area without being noticed several times

/$525 is excessive and I would think community service would be in order

There was a Vice-President of a company I worked for that got canned for stealing cigarettes from the company store.

Evidently he would buy something that would cause the clerk to turn around and reach up and grab them.  The cigarettes are counted at the end of every shift so they sort of knew when it was happening.  Eventually they installed a camera.  By that time too many proles knew about it so they couldn't just sweep it under the rug.

This. Don't offer free refills? Fill the cup behind the counter, otherwise let people refill. That shiat is pennies per cup. In fact, I think it would be cheaper to offer refills for free because if I see "no free refills" then I don't get ice and my cup is all soda. With free refills I fill it with ice and the actual soda content is much less, so even if I do refill I use less total soda.

Old person checking in here. While you're getting off my lawn, let me tell you that there never used to be free refills, and we'd order "no ice" in order to get our money's worth. If we still had to get a refill (usually for 25 cents, but other places charged you full price all over again) we'd order "no ice" again.

Nowadays, I can buy a refill anywhere with my big ol' QuikTrip cup. Some charge me nothing, others a buck or so.

/Okay, gotta go check my belts for onions now.

On reddit there is someone claiming that they work there and the soda machines are behind the counter and you have to ask.  There are apparently signs on the counter, fountain, and hanging from above about no refills.  They also state that the only way out is the entrance and going through the cashier by fence/rails.  So if this guy was doing it multiple times he was asking for a refill and then sneaking out the entrance.

Sure it's petty but I suspect he was caught doing it a lot and the cafeteria got tired of it and had the guard make an appearance when he showed up to catch him in the act.  He threw a hissy and the guard took it to the next level.

Why the fark should I as a store owner have to rearrange my store in your image because of your inability to read? Allowing you to fill your cup frees my staff t odo other things like get your order to you timely. Be a good member of society and stop always trying to take advantage of shiat. My guess is

1) The guy was an asshole
2) He did this regularly
3) He told the cop to shove it
4) After he was arrested he said 'I'll pay the f'ing 89 cents' ok?

By that time it was too late.

Unless you set the prices you have no idea what you're paying for. For all you know 80 cents goes to overhead and the other 9 cents goes towards funding the construction of a shrine to Buddah. But whta you do know is that a soda that YOU fill up currently costs $0.89 cents. That means you don't pay for "me" to get your soda. You're paying and getting it yourself. Read the sign. Follow the instructions. Or, do what you want too, but don't biatch about the consequenses.

You're reading through your anti-authority glasses. There is no "mechanism" in place to fine people for stealing soda. The cafateria has nothing to do with the punishment. They simply called security to report the theft. His ticket is what it is because of where he was when he decided to steal.
