That's because the 99% can't afford a jet pack.

THANKS, OBAMA!

People clearly haven't thought through that brain improvement one.  The moment I can google right from my wetware, I'm on it.

I am glad that we are taking 3D printing seriously. Our earnest entrance to the beginnings of replication technology has been quite uplifting. I am optimistic about future technology and really want to see it deployed as much as possible.

If everyone had a rocketpack we would need a full time staff of people to clean bloody smears off the sides of large buildings and clean up debris from mid-air collisions.

A mere 20% said they'd try eating meat made in a lab.

Clearly 20% have never eaten at Taco Bell.

I want a jet pack, a house-cleaning robot and a flying and/or driverless car. I also want a replicator, a tricorder and a holodeck. I'll pass on teleportation and pod racers though.

I guess in a world full of people, only some want to flyIsn't that crazy?

I have it on good authority that hoverboards are coming out next year. I've known this since I learned it from an undisclosed source when I was a kid. Sometime around 1985.

If we can develop true AI before we turn this planet into a scoured hellscape, then the robots can take over and we might have a chance.  So yeah, cautiously excited.

Part of the problem is that, thanks to the internet and Hollywood, we've all seen how quickly some of the possible tech can go so badly...

Almost all of the higher levels of tech try to kill us or alternatively help us kill ourselves even faster...

Taco Bell meat is made someone's basement, not anything worthy being called a lab.

Yep, I want a jetpack, for quick trips when I don't feel like taking the flying car.

It's 2014 already.  I want my flying car.

I also can't comprehend why people would be more comfortable with a computer jacked into their brain than with eating lab grown meat.  I'd have no problem at all with lab grown meat, if it's as good as animal grown meat.  Hell, I'd try it now if somebody wanted to give me a sample.

A better bet would be a scaled up quad copter instead of a jet pack. You can do it today with three of those thrust units for sport boarders, at 100 lbs thrust each.
A couple improvements in battery tech should really make it practical.

A sidebar on drgloryboy's link showed motorized skateboards. If'n y'all combine these two (the quad with the skateboard), we'd have the true future...

A Hoverboard!

All the naysayers saying 'nobody can fly a jetpack safely'... the driving fatality rate is something like one for every 200 million hours of driving. Most people can handle a car 99% of the time.

The when a jetpack breaks down you can't just coast to a nice slow stop. No thanks.

You know how you get a face full of bugs on a bike or scooter. Jet packs are like that only the bugs are pigeons, sea gulls and owls.

Speaking of sea gulls, you don't want to get one of those in the eye and the goggles do nothing.

Personal flying machines are one of the dumbest ideas ever. It's dumber than crossing the Atlantic on a pedal-Swan.

I'm an old man at heart, but only actually 28. Even some of the stuff we have today has me puzzled and some things even seem like too much. I find myself seeing an invention that makes something i used to do easier and am like "well wtf we need one of these for? I used to do this without that new fangled crap." Of course, my grand parents probably said the same shiat about some of the stuff i use, like a new fangled "cellular telephone" and "cruise control" lol.

We already do. They're called paramedics.

Well, the bloody smear guys are generally lumped under the "industrial and/or medical cleaning services" category. But the paramedics have to bag most of the big chunks.

Pictures withheld for your protection. I probably just woke up half the NSA.

Phil: This jet pack project is going to be so exciting. Jet packs are the ultimate dream of every scientist. Skies teeming with ordinary citizens strapped to rockets.
Lem: Flying through the air at 60 miles an hour in any direction... A lot of people are going to die.
