Passengers should have been wary when they first identified the pilot.

BEE-ach? Really?

The highest I've seen a bug go splat on the windscreen is around 27,000 ft. But I suspect to hit a swarm of bees the aircraft wasn't too high after take-off.

According to the article, the plane was flying from Las Vegas to Duluth. I bet the bees had nothing to do with the plane being turned around. Everyone probably decided they didn't want to go to Duluth.

For something as small as a bee, even with a swarm, wouldn't the engines chew them up pretty easily?

It all depends on the size and age of the aircraft, if it's an older, smaller aircraft, bees might well play havoc with even a jet engine.

The engines have probes for measuring inlet pressure and temperature which I could see getting clogged, but I'd be more worried about them clogging up pitot tubes and the rosemont probe. Not to mention having a hard time seeing out the front windscreen.

The pilot probably just wanted to be able to say to the tower "We have to turn around. WE ARE COVERED IN BEEEEEEESSSS!!!!!!"
