Is Georgia really an applicable example? IIRC the Russians did little to nothing to intervene in the fighting between the Georgians and Ossetians until the Georgians started killing Russian peacekeepers.

cman: Also, the Russian people love him for what he did.

Maybe, but his ratings had been falling for a few years.

And there have been protests against what's going on in Moscow.  They're not getting much press.  It's hard to say if this will help his approval ratings in the long run, especially if it ends up hurting their economy.

cman: Be that as it may he successfully took land that had an important role in the Region. Also, the Russian people love him for what he did. He did win a little bit at the cost of significant degradation of their international reputation.

So would it be fair to say he "won" in a similar way Bush "won" in Iraq?

Because I'm liking that metaphor.

How's Gary Kasparov polling today compared to 2012?

tinyarena: cman: Putin played an incredible political game and he won.

Lost Ukraine by offering a $15B trade deal when it should have been $50B
Lost respect of nations who now question Russia's commitment to treaties and agreements
Cost the Russian economy maybe $100B in trade and development deals
Turkey on notice, if Russia mistreats the Cossacks in Crimea, Turkey locks their fleet in the Black Sea
Seized a tiny peninsula, where they already had bases, and have no land bridge to it.
Putin looks like a fool and a dictator

WINNING

Plus, the loss of the Crimean vote during the national election (they all vote pro Russia candidates) means he may have lost influence over mainland Ukraine.
And Crimea is a huge economic drain on Ukraine and now, Russia.
I don't think he "won" shiat, other than he gets to beat his chest.

I loved the Abyss but it seems like the last 10 minutes were completed at the last minute in a completely different style.

Leviathan had Amanda Pays in it, which was nice...

Headso: For it's day The Abyss was a pretty cool movie, subs. Haven't seen it in a while though might not hold up...

Holds up quite well - watch the Director's cut, though. It's much better.

Actually after a quick Google it appears both variations are acceptable.

Beat me to it.

No idea Putin was a TNA fan.  Would have thought he was so nationalistic that he would only watch Fedor Emelianenko fights.

Danger Avoid Death: Those of us old enough to have rented videotapes all have that one movie that you somehow forgot to return and ended up costing you more in late fees than the movie was worth. For me, that movie was "The Abyss".

/damned thing fell under my car seat and didn't get dropped in the night drop slot with the others.
//went out of town and didn't know it was a problem for a couple of weeks.
///cost me about $60
////and a lot of slashies.
//somebody please stop me ...

Those of us who are old enough to have rented movies when you also rented the VCR to play them all have that movie that got lost and it cost them dearly. For me it was La Bamba. I didn't lose it though. The day after we watched it, my 18 month old son wanted to watch it on the "TV" in the kitchen, but abandoned the idea when he couldn't get the movie to play. Hours later the wife turned the oven on to preheat it. I came home to thick, black smoke rolling out of the apartment. I paid $76 for that one. I still can't see that title without cringing.

otaku69: Mugato: vernonFL: I liked 'The Abyss'.

The Abyss was a good film. A ripoff homage of The Day the Earth Stood Still and it was a revolutionary use of CGI. And boobies.

The Abyss was good but the Directors edition blew my mind.

Yeah, the original was great, the Directors cut is ridiculously good and surprisingly absent from so many best sci-fi movie lists, seriously underrated flick.

HenryFnord: dittybopper: *NICE*.

Made even more nicer by the fact that the ship in Leviathan was Russian.

Thanks. I only used Leviathan because I couldn't remember 'Deepstar Six' at the time.
