I really do hope that it does happen

Ukraine and Russia have such a shared history that I dont think Putin would believe its right to give up on claims of Ukrainian submission

However, Russia really wants to have a modern nation and they cant do that without the west. Putin does LOVE capitalism and I think he does want to keep it going full speed.

If I were a betting man Russia was doing all this dick waving and supporting of pro-Russian groups to force Ukraine to agree to the annexation of Crimea. Putin played an incredible political game and he won.

Lost Ukraine by offering a $15B trade deal when it should have been $50B
Lost respect of nations who now question Russia's commitment to treaties and agreements
Cost the Russian economy maybe $100B in trade and development deals
Turkey on notice, if Russia mistreats the Cossacks in Crimea, Turkey locks their fleet in the Black Sea
Seized a tiny peninsula, where they already had bases, and have no land bridge to it.
Putin looks like a fool and a dictator

Plus, the loss of the Crimean vote during the national election (they all vote pro Russia candidates) means he may have lost influence over mainland Ukraine.
And Crimea is a huge economic drain on Ukraine and now, Russia.

Those of us who are old enough to have rented movies when you also rented the VCR to play them all have that movie that got lost and it cost them dearly. For me it was La Bamba. I didn't lose it though. The day after we watched it, my 18 month old son wanted to watch it on the "TV" in the kitchen, but abandoned the idea when he couldn't get the movie to play. Hours later the wife turned the oven on to preheat it. I came home to thick, black smoke rolling out of the apartment. I paid $76 for that one. I still can't see that title without cringing.
