Considering it's in Venice, Italy, it's probably insanely expensive and that's why it is abandoned, not because it is haunted. It costs too much to demolish and rebuild or renovate the buildings.

Also, it's not like the rest of whatever land exists in Venice isn't as full of plague graves as that island. The city was plague central.

Books on the NYT bestsellers list are rarely obscure.

Besides, this place sounds like it would make demonreach seem like Disney land.

Amazing that so many ghost hunters have been there but were unable to bring back any kind of documentation of supernatural activity on the island.  One guy was possessed briefly?  What, did the ghost possess him then think, fark this, this guy's breath is terrible?

There's no evidence this place ever was anything that is being told about it.  There's another island nearby that WAS absolutely used for plague victims and I think this is a case of fiction and mis-represented history becoming urban-fact.

I did some minor research into this awhile back when it was featured on TV as being haunted.  Mostly came up with info indicating this is the wrong island.

This is some brilliant history writing: "The trouble started back in the late 19th century when Poveglia served as a checkpoint for ships going to Venice. After a pair of ships carrying plague victims arrived in 1793, the island was sealed off..."

As many as 100,000 people are believed to have died there. The island's soil is said to be heavily mixed with human ash and bone - so much so that it's five feet higher than it was.

My wife used to think our house was haunted by a guy named Walter S., who had lived there thirty years ago.  Any time something weird happened, she'd blame it on "old Walter" and sometimes ask him to stop.

After a few years I'd fixed all the old creaky stuff and broken appliances, and now the house is running smoothly.  No weird noises.  No doors that shut on their own. Lights in every corner of the basement.

Oh, and I found out that Walter S. was still alive and had a place two towns over from us.  He's in his eighties and on his fourth wife.  Was totally a smug SOB when I pointed that out to Mrs. R.

As I said, I don't believe in ghosts, but that show as a guilty pleasure of mine for a while.  I guess I looked at it the same way as when I watched the first Paranormal Activity movie.  Just creepy stuff captured on a camera that you know isn't real, but it's still fun to watch.

I was there last year and the flooding was pretty insane. Lots of "streets" had sand bags and temporary elevated walkways. One morning we went to St. Marks and all of the shop keepers around the edge of the square were squee-geeing the water out of their shops. Pretty crazy!

Same.  Atheist from early on, never really believed in the supernatural once I got past the "had a bad dream and want to sleep with mommy and daddy" phase.  But there is one weird thing:

Three separate "psychics," over the course of five years, and three separate occasions, were reading auras as a sort of party trick.  Each one looked at me, would ask me to move to a different light, and would confusedly proclaim that I had no visible aura.  Just, you know, nothing.

Happen once, I'd say the person was trying to be mysterious.  Second time is a cool coincidence.  Three times, even my skeptical mind started to wonder what the hell that meant.  I assume there is some sort of web group out there on  Google+ that shares pictures of a random ten people that says "Tell this person he has no aura.  Will creep him the f**k out."

It means you're hard to read (can't quote on mobile). I'm a tarot card reader, aura, what have you. It's extreme empathy, intuition, and observation. Some people just are really closed off and it's hard to get an impression. You probably also have an awesome poker face. You more or less have to make out with someone like that to get a feeling, and it'll just be how he feels about you.

FunkOut: Shadowknight: Slaves2Darkness: Beats me, but my friends call me a null void. I kill Ouija boards, end hauntings, and stop supernatural crap. Course I'm an atheist and don't believe in any of that shiat, but hey keep farking those ghost chickens.

/make of that what you will
//I think it means I'm the Devil

I think that means you're an NPC.

That would explain this exclamation point that's always hovered over my head, and my obsession with always killing exactly ten of a thing.

Slaves2Darkness: Shadowknight: Repo Man: Why do only humans have ghosts? I'd find a ghost shark much more frightening than a human ghost. Imagine, waking up to find a ghost of a Carcharodon Megalodon swimming around your house.

For what it's worth, there are legends of ghost dogs and horses and such.  Strangely, it always seems like these ghost animals have close connections to humans for some reason.  Wonder why that is...

Beats me, but my friends call me a null void. I kill Ouija boards, end hauntings, and stop supernatural crap. Course I'm an atheist and don't believe in any of that shiat, but hey keep farking those ghost chickens.

Actually, if you "break" Ouija boards, it means you have little Ideomotor response. What that means is you have no response to mild stimuli. Here's a way to have fun, and test it... ask the questions. Then after one session let another. If it moves for one and not the other... it's you not being responsive. Nothing "spiritual" about it, it works on the minds of those holding the pointer.

I looked at it from many angles on Google earth, and found that there really isn't a suitable spot for both a Super Walmart and a drive thru Chik-fil-a so I'm gonna have to pass.
