Glenn Beck worked the crowd like a preacher at a rally this month in Louisville, Ky., declaring that God had responded to conservatives' prayers by sending a slate of tea party candidates to wrest control of the Republican Party from Mitch McConnell.

So what happens if they lose?  Do they blame God?

The average age for AM talk radio listeners is 65 and over. They don't have to run it and any moron can pre-set a station.

Isn't it funny how every conservative radio host acts like he/she could solve all the problems with national politics, but none of them have the backbone and/or clean record to actually do something about it? You'd think with all those listeners each of them claims to have, any election they'd enter would be an easy win. In fact, now there are conservative politicians who, rather than do nothing and biatch about it in Washington, are going to the AM airwaves to do nothing and biatch about the problems they did nothing and biatched about. I guess biatching about a problem without having to do anything about it is considered conservative exceptionalism.

I don't see a liberal talk radio service along the lines of the conservative version ever being able to work. Conservative radio is all about reinforcing the existing world-views of frightened ignorant hicks. There is certainly a market for something to reinforce the granola-eating tree-hugging PETA members, but probably not enough density in many areas to support a radio station. That is what the Internet is for.

FreedomWorks happily takes its money to the bank, Beck does the same with his cut, and they cook up the next scheme to part the audience and their money.

Maybe blaming God is part of the next scheme. They'll do whatever looks like it'll give the best return. The sure thing is there's going to be another moneymaking scheme, and another one after that, and another after that, etc.

Freedom isn't free. Freedom costs $6,000,001.05. Inflation, apparently.

So an unholy alliance exists between FreedomWorks and RW media people like Beck, Hannity, Rush, Levin et al?

They are all raking in millions for extolling the virtues of the Tea Party?

My surprised face... -__-

That noted, the headline made me laugh. So there's that.

Yeah, because they don't tend to gather in geographically small areas where a single station could reach them, like in a city...

And, liberals actually work during the day. Conservatives, usually old, sit in the afternoon, gripe about stuff they don't understand, and wait for the world to burn, while their grandchildren work to keep them fat and bedded, the moochers.

I think most of us are aware that left-of-center political talk radio isn't a commercial success and probably won't be anytime soon.

But liberal talk wasn't the topic of tfa, yet you keep bringing it up in this thread, so I'll ask -- is there some point you're trying to make? Is there something you'd have us libs conclude from the fact that there's almost infinitely more right-wingers than left-wingers on AM radio?

It really has more to do with whether there was an un(der)served customer base. If there's market saturation of liberal opinion, another liberal source will fail. If there's insufficient supply of conservative opinion, conservative media will thrive.

2014-04-17 11:08:52 AM
why does liberal talk radio not appeal to liberals?

because liberals don't need to have a false reality bubble built around them
they don't need constant reinforcement that they're "right" and "just" despite the facts around them.
that kind of brainwashing takes a steady stream of disinformation.

As a representative of Liberal McLibbyville, I honestly don't want liberal-oriented talk radio.  I mean, I'd be happy to see it exist (beyond liberalish NPR) but radio for me only exists when I am driving and when I am driving I'm cranking up and rock and roll not listening to something that will make me angry as I try to operate a very dangerous piece of machinery thank you very much.

As others have said above, I get my news from reading - literacy means I don't need someone to read to me.

No, it's just that it's easier to find large groups of people with closed minds.

Modern Bircherism  "conservatism" is characterized by an inability to see/address/perceive issues from more than single, contradictory (and usually terrified) perspective. This is so ingrained that reality, history, and empirical facts are routinely and pointedly ignored. (See "libertarian" politics/economics, birfers, Tea Party, Fox News...)

It's amazing how many people can take a topic-related joke so seriously.

I grabbed perhaps the single most famous quote from the show, and adapted it to the topic (talk radio).  Obviously, due to the continued popularity of conservative talk radio, I couldn't really apply it to that, so I was basically left with a single choice that was funny, and every one got their hackles up.

As long as we're all straying from the topic....

I actually liked liberal talk radio. The shows I got to listen to were generally pretty good. I liked that Lizz Winstead/Chuck D/Marc Maron show in the morning. It was actually really funny. I liked the Al Franken show when I could listen to it. Most of the hosts and guests they had were smart and insightful. Stephanie Miller is hilarious. (She still has a show.) While the Air America network appeared to be mismanaged, obviously there's still a market for liberal talk radio. There is still a liberal station in Chicago and I know there are liberal stations in other major markets, as well as the Pacifica radio network.

And yeah, listening to it made me angry sometimes but it was oddly comforting hearing things you always thought out loud. It made me feel a little less like I was all alone and crazy. Kinda like the radio version of the Fark politics tab in the sense that we like to make fun of the stupid things that happen in politics. For full disclosure, I don't have an aux input in my car and I didn't like most of the music stations in Chicago.

/no liberal talk radio in Dallas as far as I know

BTW, to get the full conspiratorial flavor of Alex Jones, you *HAVE* to listen to him on shortwave.  It just adds a certain je ne sais quoiwhen you know that you're listening in a manner that can't be tracked back to you.

Until after you've listened a while, constantly being reminded that the guy is a buffoon, and go back to listening to the English broadcasts of Radio China International or Radio Romania.
