Yep.  There's the problem.  Kids are assholes to pets, even if they're not trying to be mean.  Sometimes the animals get fed up with it.  When I was a kid, I yanked on my cat's tail, and she shredded my hand.  I learned my lesson, and my parents didn't tell the farking news about it.

There was another story not too long ago here that I thought this was a repeat of. Where the family was hiding in the bedroom away from the cat. Think it either was kicked or reacting to a new child. This case though maybe the cat broke free of it's deep cover conditioning and reverted to it's original extraterrestrial feline psychopathy.

I don't know how accurate the article was but it claimed it as a 1.5 year-old intact male.  There's your problem.

Could be misdirected aggression which can happen suddenly to a well taken care of cat.

Good news is when a cat flips out, nobody dies.

This. The cat was supposedly "owned" by a child, not the parents. This is a recipe for disaster, particularly with little boys, who are by nature hyperactive savages with a cruel streak a mile wide. I know cats can go nuts, just like people can, but my suspicions lean toward the cat coming to an end of its patience.

I've known a lot of cats in my life and I've never known one to suddenly go nut for no reason at all. I'm betting the animal was abused. But let this be a lesson to all would-be, but unknowledgeable cat owners. Fluffy is of a race of creatures that was the last to be domesticated and the first to return to the wild. They are very efficient and intelligent predators, designed to kill rapidly. Even a domestic house cat can fark you up bad. Usually they choose not to.

I agree. I have raised dozens of cats and not one has ever turned out mean. Then again, I never told them they were cats. They think they are small, furry people.

Exactly.  And it sucks to see parents immediately jump to the conclusion that the animal "went nuts" and is dangerous when that kind of thing happens.  It's much more productive to patch the kid up and say, "That's what happens when you're mean.  So be nice."

Exactly. I've had cats all my life and I have never been savaged by any of them. I respect them, I don't let people tease them and we get along just fine. As for the 10-year-old boy "owner", well, that's just asking for trouble. I bet you anything the brat was constantly bugging the shiate out of the cat and he decided to teach the kid a lesson. I know my own son learned a lesson when he was young. He bugged my cat one time too many and she took a swipe at him, nearly missed his eye and left a little scar as a reminder. Yeah, I told him he was a dumbass and to stop bugging the cat.

ATFA, it was a tom (not neutered).
They're not known for putting up with a lot of shenanigans; they can't afford to do so.
Hormones tell them they must protect themselves, their territory, and protect/fark the hell out of any female cat in heat that wanders into it.

Spay and neuter, people.
It prevents so many problems...as well as unwanted critters.
