Where have we heard this before...

Pointless story: one side of the family, long ago, was some form of Prussian royalty I'm told. But the source for that was trying to sell my great aunt some book, I think. So probably not.

You didn't see the movie "The Patriot", I assume?

It's becoming almost embarrassing at this point. I'd have more respect for him at this point if he just came out and said "Ukraine needs to bite the pillow, and the EU and USA just need to look away for a few weeks.". I'd Stoll hate what they're doing , but I dont think anyone believes the lies at this point.

/Give lip service to the lies due to fear or profit perhaps, but not believe.

Can't we just appease Putin?  If we give him eastern Ukraine won't we get some peace in our time?

1. Illegally annex Crimea.
2. Stir up the same kind of crap in Eastern Ukraine.
3. Agree to stop stirring up crap in exchange for acceptance of Crimean annexation.
4. Profit.

I was watching this Q&A because I figured it would bore me to sleep.

There was a part where a villager in far east Russia said he made his living as a truck driver, but the nearest road to his home was 50 km away.  You could see Putin start cracking up.  After the villager finished his question, Putin said "What's the point of driving for a living if you don't have a road?"

Then both Putin and I got distracted because he started talking about gas pipelines or something.

Nor so very well trained- they know precisely which buildings are of strategic importance, there have been no cases of rampages, and everyone follows the script. Not to show my age, but those guys look a lot like spetznaz types to me.

Also, in a completely unscripted and totally believable interview with American Hero and Champion of Civil Liberties Edward Snowden, Putin explained Russia did no form of mass surveillance and that it would be 'against the law' to do so in Russia.

Putin missed his calling. He ought to have been an actor. That he manages not to roar with laughter when playing the innocence abuse role is a testament to his dramatic skills.

Yes, we have self-organizing groups in Russia that show up with armour piercing ammunition, weapons for them, and communications gear to co-ordinate their actions.

groppet: "I dont think I've ever seen a finer armed and dressed "rebels" in my life"

I dunno. A lot of the pictures have some odd discontinuities for professional military units.
(e.g. nice new BDUs, plenty of ammo and nice clean rifles -- but most of the guys are wearing low-rent civilian outdoors-y type shoes or outright athletic shoes. Not even hiking boots. And 'tough guy' gear -- absurd gloves, throwing knives stowed like an 80s action movie, etc -- is amusingly-well represented.

It could actually be locals with surplus Russian gear, seized Ukrainian military/police gear, and a few Russian intelligence agents running the show.

I wonder when Putin is just going to declare himself the Nome King and start calling his troops his Winkie Army.

Felgraf: "Putin explained Russia did no form of mass surveillance and that it would be 'against the law' to do so in Russia."

It would be true performance art if he denied it using the same exact words that Obama used.

My one wish for this whole ugly mess is that BUDK starts using it as a sponsorship opportunity.  Tactical spears, Glaives, ninja stars of all descriptions, even some tactical sledge hammers and various zombie widgits.

Isn't it a violation of the Geneva Conventions to field national troops without insignia or other identifiers?

I hear the Turks have a prior claim on Crimea and southern Ukraine... I guess we're lucky they haven't recovered from having their empire taken apart yet. Guess we should tell Putin there is a prior claim? I think the Mongols have a claim on Russia, too.

Russia sure is hoping to try another go at empire. History says there isn't a spot of land in that area that hasn't been overrun 4 or 5 times.

Seriously, is there any possibility this will end well at all?

2014-04-17 11:46:15 AM
This is just spontaneous patriotic action by locals.

Throw in a few Russian intelligence types and a few Ukrainian army defectors for fun and lulz.

There has been some speculation that this is why the "armed protesters" are wearing the ribbons seen in the picture below.

We're playing the same game, only with different rules. Read up on the rich non-renewable resources in Kosovo. America and its corporations received a handsome share of that mother load -- you're right, without annexing territory.

Do you really think Putin wants Ukraine so his state's landmass can increase on a globe? It's about resources and, specifically, pipelines in the case of Ukraine.

fireclown: so, putting bullets in their heads wouldn't be an act of war then?

Putin would consider it an act of war because he will say that he has to protect the well-being of "ethnic Russians" outside his borders.  I personally hate the "ethnic Russians" line of reasoning because the media has been acting like it has a kernel of rationality.  We don't let Italy annex New Jersey to protect the ethnic Italians.  We don't like Mexico send troops into Arizona to protect the ethnic Mexicans.
