She shouldn't really have anything to worry about with the size difference, Akita's are very smart dogs and can be quite gentle.  <CSB> I worked in a mall pet store when I was in high school.  One day the assistant manager's akita walked up to him and dropped a hamster out of its mouth at his feet. The thing had managed to get out of its cage and the akita found it, gently scooped it up and brought it to him.</CSB>

FTFA: 'Much to my surprise, Lily has adopted the kitten!' Lorrie said of the dog that never had puppies of her own. 'She comes and gets me when she needs to be fed and watches to make sure I do it right.

She just wants to fatten her up.  Too small to make much of a meal now.

I used to foster kittens for a local cat shelter and my 100 lbs. Shep/Rot mix was as gentle as can be to them.  I've got a ton of great pictures of inter-species snuggling.

No, quite the opposite actually, they were bred to hunt bear.

timujin: No, quite the opposite actually, they were bred to hunt bear.

Still, they weren't bred to attack small things, and they'd kill their own pups if they couldn't be gentle enough to an animal the size of the kitten.

There's some additional risk due to inexperience, but as an older settled dog, I'd say they're minimal.

Akitas are classified as vicious dogs by many insurance companies and can result in denial of coverage for their owners. Bet you didn't know that.

I did.  I know a guy whose Mom had one for years and it was always well-cared for and one day it just went off and tore her up.  She was in the hospital for 6 weeks.  Chow-Chows are the same.

That's the thing, even though they were bred as hunting dogs, they are extremely intelligent and have a gentle nature, at least in my experience.  They could be made to be mean, and would be quite dangerous if so, but I don't think that's their nature.

wow. this brought back a flood of memories.  and tears.

in 1991 we had this great rottweiler, Cody.  She was an awesome dog.  My wife found a calico kitten, same size and colors as the one in this article.  Cody adopted that kitten from day one.  They were inseparable.

Fast forward ten years......Cody was blind, and very feeble.  Pumpkin (the calico kitten) became her caretaker.  Pumpkin would go out in the yard and meow, and Cody would hear her, and go outside to do her business.  They were lifelong buds.

Both gone now...damn, they were great pets.

I always liked how he was less enamored as the lady of the house went thru the things he'd have to do for the kitten.

2014-04-17 07:30:35 PM
My cat once had a single-kitten litter; a huge brute of a male cat that we decided to keep too.

One day, after he was grown and she'd had another litter of kittens, I walked in to find him sitting in the box with the kittens, diligently cleaning each one and stubbornly keeping them from staggering around loose until mommy got back.Yes, he even grabbed one by the scruff of the neck.

That was adorable. What was hilarious is when he would try to play with his "littermates."  They'd run and jump at him and he'd bat them out of midair like King Kong with a biplane ... or that baskeball player in the "Big Buddy" commercial.

They've actually found that female cats will watch each other's litters while the other hunts.  Dogs will do the same, even the males for fellow 'pack'.
