They are deriving their revenue from investors? That doesn't sound like a good plan.

I thought IBM was all contractors?  DO they actually have any workers to fire?

As I understand, they're buying back stock so aggressively that the number of outstanding shares decreases by around 5% per year.  This allows their earnings-per-share to approach their 2015 target of $20/share even though revenue continues to plummet.

Looking far into the future, assuming the trend of stock buybacks continues, there'll come a day when they have only one public share outstanding.  A publicly-traded company worth hundreds of billions of dollars and almost no shareholder equity.  In some sense, it's the epitome of efficiency.

/actually they take the company private long before that happens

Typically yes. You need at least one IBMer to keep the lowly contractors in line. Oh, everyone does the same work, but the IBMaster gets paid about twice as much.
