They were going to work out a longer term deal if everything with Smith was hunky-dory anyway. That option would hit the cap more than necessary if your plan is to keep him around. Sign him to a 5-6 year deal and make that first year cap hit more in the $4-6 million range instead of taking nearly $10 million on.

I'm too lazy to Wiki the exact population & demographic figures, but I'm pretty sure that when combining the metro pop totals of SEA & SF, you end up with at least 5 gazillion over-caffeinated tech employees on their computers all day just waiting to snark and b*tch.

yeah it's besides the point, they weren't going to pay $10 million to Smith next year anyways - if they were going to keep him around they would've already worked on a deal that didn't affect the cap as much

I don't know if they will or won't pick up the option, but Tim Kawakami is well known in the Bay Area as being a huge troll.  He just puts out one piece of tabloid fodder after another. Nobody around here takes him seriously.

Why Would I Read the Article: I don't know if they will or won't pick up the option, but Tim Kawakami is well known in the Bay Area as being a huge troll.  He just puts out one piece of tabloid fodder after another. Nobody around here takes him seriously.

As a Seahawks fan, I hope they do pick it up. Screwing your cap up for a headcase who'll likely end up suspended is a horrible way to run your team. There is no reason in the world why the 49ers should ever consider eating a $10mill cap number on Aldon Smith in 2015. Either sign him to a longterm deal witha low 2015 cap number, or cut your losses. Of course, he could end up suspended for a good long time and he'd be cheap on a "prove it" deal for 2015. Even then you decline the option.

If Aldon Smith had never done all of the really stupid Aldon Smith stuff that he did...they still would not pick up the 2015 option. It makes no sense financially.

Probably the Jets, as they're the team dumb enough to cough up the most base salary money.

I'm not gonna lie: as I stood in the stands at MetLife Stadium watching Percy "so much for your halftime speech" Harvin essentially put the game away 12 seconds into the second half, my thoughts turned to the handful of Farkers who troll every Seahawks thread (some of whom have made appearances in this thread) and how delicious their tears must have been. I pictured them all throwing Harbaugh-style tantrums simultaneously.

Gloating? Hell yes. But we don't whine. We simply don't take sports that serious in the Pac NW.

Seriously, all you got is we once complained about bad refs from almost 10 years ago??? That's it???

Because the Niners never did anything to earn the ire of Hawks fans? It's probably the most significant rivalry in moden football. Not by history of course, but simply because it's two of the best teams in the same conference being perrenial championship contenders.

And really, can you point to a significant amount of lack of graciousness of Seattle towards Denver? I like Manning, he's a great QB, and, while I didn't so much like the two weeks of people making the Hawks seem like underdogs, I would've, and most fans I knew, been alright relatively speaking if the Broncos won.

I can't really say the same about San Fran.

Um,isn't perennial generally longer than "for about the last three years? "

San Fran has the Montana/Young years to hang their hats on as well as their recent return to form under Harbaugh. Seattle has this Wilson/Carroll era and not much else. Sure, they're both way more relevant than my beloved Redskins have been in forever, but I think "perennial" is overstating it, I'd have gone with "recent,"myself.

And really, can you point to a significant amount of lack of graciousness of Seattle towards Denver? I honestly don't think anyone was making the Seahawks under dogs (in fact weren't they favored by about 3 points in the game?), and no I don't recall any specific enmity towards the Broncos and their fans from the Seahawk fan contingent, but both fanbases are significantly west of me, so I may have just missed it. I also get shiat talking a  division rival and all that. I also know that if the Redskins has just won a Super Bowl I'd be an insufferable douchebag about it, but I don't think i'd be whining about every little thing that happens to the Eagles, Giants or Cowboys. And fairly or not, that does seem like what is happening with you guys and your complex about the 49ers.

That's as a relatively neutral outsider to the rivalry. I was pulling for the Seahawks in the Super Bowl for two reasons

1. My default option is "NFC, unless it's one of the other three East teams"
2. Watching Peyton Manning fail after a media tongue bathing will never not be funny.

I was mostly just hoping for a close, fun game and it really wasn't that.

LucklessWonder:I honestly don't think anyone was making the Seahawks under dogs (in fact weren't they favored by about 3 points in the game?)

Broncos were favored and most pundits picked the Broncos (hence Seahawks were underdogs).

\Just pointing that out
\\I'll be on my way now

2014-04-17 07:27:28 PM

LucklessWonder: Um,isn't perennial generally longer than "for about the last three years? "

It's longer than two to my knowledge.  It might be stretching it, but since both teams have been successful the past two years and they're expected to be successful next year, I thought it was a safe call.  Then again, they said the same about Atlanta and Houston last year, so who knows.

My argument was that the enmity mostly seen from Seahawks fans is against the Niners.  I'm not saying there isn't any left against the Steelers, but most fans have let that die and moved on with really only other fan bases bringing that particular instance up.

And the Broncos were favored over the Hawks.  Not by a wide margin, but again enough to not really be indicative of what actually happened.  That said, I'm totally willing to accept that the Broncos just had a bad day though which is bad when the top defense is having a good one.

2014-04-17 07:42:51 PM
Can't we at least talk about the niners were never going to sign Aldon Smith to this option anyway instead of the usual whining about Seattle Fans who entered the conversation to actually talk about the topic on hand? Jesus.

2014-04-17 07:46:10 PM

The rivalry between the fanbases is ridiculous and annoying, no doubt. I don't see anyone "whining about every little thing that happens" to the Niners, nor do I see it coming the other way. There is some gloating over the Smith/Culliver/Kaep situations, but that goes both ways (look at the react to the Seahawk's various marijuana suspensions for proof of that).

Complexes in this rivalry go both ways. The 49ers fans spent the majority of the last decade getting stomped by the big-fish-in-a-small-pond Seahawks teams after having been dominant in the 80s and 90s. At the same time, Niners fans were always able to point to their trophies and the 2 recent playoff runs in 2011-12. Now that a shift has occured and both teams are good, maybe great, at the same time, the bickering a bullsh*t has reached epic and annoying levels both ways. Especially with the teams meeting in a close contest for the NFC Championship and the Niners losing it in just about the most painful way possible (Sherman thwarting Kaep & Crabtree).

2014-04-17 07:59:49 PM
If you ever want to really wade into all the crazy bullsh*t between 49ers and Seahawks fans, check out the threads that NinersNation & Fieldgulls set up specifically for fans to troll each other during the rivalry game weeks. It's ridiculous. Post counts in the thousands, etc. The fact that the trolling was so pervasive in the blogs that they had to create threads specifically for trolls says enough.
