Bud light is like 40% more expensive and contains less alcohol.  No thx.

For cheap beer, I prefer Natural Light or Michelob Ultra. Mind you, I've had neither of those in probably over a decade, so I can't even confirm if I can handle them anymore. Next step up for me is Newcastle. I still, from time to time, partake.  Otherwise, I'm actually quite happy with the local and semi-local beer selections.

My taste(s) in beer, and alcohol in general, go through phases. Currently I'm in my "light as in taste and color" beer phase. I've been hitting up the Natty Green's Wildflower and Carolina Blonde Strawberry Cream very heavily. Both are wonderful, flavorful, light beers. Wildflower's got a nice chamomile tone, the Carolina Blonde has nice acidic, and not sweet at all, natural strawberry flavor.

robodog: Cheeseface: FriarReb98: who despite having multiple sources of good beer will still stock his cooler in the summer with Coors Light.

^What this guy said. Only beer snobs who are so snobby they have no friends have issues knocking back some pisswasser from time to time with their buddies. ESPECIALLY if it's 1000 degrees outside.

However there's tons of drinkable craft/"craft" beer out there. New Belgium Shift lager immediately comes to mind, and Terrapin Recreation Ale if you're in Georgia.

I'd rather have a Leinenkugel Summer Shandy or a Bell's Oberon if it's hot out, though I do admit that when I was in Austin and it was 104 with 80% humidity (winds off the gulf) a cold Bud or a Corona wasn't bad.

When it gets hot out I go for the lighter beer, a Grain Belt Premium around here.

I don't care for beer, either. Too bitter. But other people like it, and more power to them. Me, I'll stick to cider. Or wine. (Riesling, Gewurz, Moscato... Nothing expensive, but no Barefoot.)

/Someday, I'll treat myself to ice wine

In my area, it's actually cheaper per volume of alcohol than Steel Reserve. Yes, I did the math :). I actually used to buy Steel Reserve from a particular gas station, because it was the most cost efficient, but they raised their prices and Milwaukees became cheaper.

I don't understand why this surprises anybody. Craft beers are expensive, and very few make light bodied beers, and by the time they make it to the local grocery store they aren't really craft brews anymore.

Jeezus, just buy a bottle of cheap vodak and be done with it if you want a buzz.

TuteTibiImperes: I've seen more and more 750ml bottles going for close to $20/per lately.

where the hell are you shopping where a) beer is sold in 750 ml bottles, and b) at a cost of 20 bucks?

I ask because in my experience over the last decade of drinking craft beers, they are overwhelmingly sold either in four/six packs from $6-$12 or 650ml bomber bottles between $2 and $12, with the high end being reserved for trippels, barleywines, and imperial stouts. The Trader Joes near me sells bombers of their own label craft IPA, double IPA, and chocolate stout for $1.99.

2014-04-16 11:10:00 PM
I am not reading all the comments to this, but someone must have mentioned by now, that almost by definition any mainstream (non-craft?) beer would outsell a craft beer, if not, then the craft beer probably wouldn't be craft anymore than say Blue Moon.

2014-04-16 11:14:58 PM
Who cares what the bestselling beers are? The side effect of having hundreds or thousands of different craft brews to try is that none of them are going to have massive sales, so comparing them to mass-produced light beers is beyond pointless.

Many beers are available in 750ml bottles (Sam Adams barrel room collection, many of the ommegang limited editions including their Game of Thrones line, Brooklyn Brewery's big bottle line, etc), but generally those are only $8-12 at retail, I would assume $20 is at a bar or it's a specialty shop bringing in things from out of market.

Here's an idea. Go visit a local craft brewer and find out how much (little) he makes a year. Probably around $50K. Then ask him how much capital investment it took to start his brewery. Probably close to a million.

Then come to Fark and post your expertise about beer pricing, Sparky.

I dont drink bud light (or much beer at all really), but cheap watery beers can be good to cook with. They are also good at killing insects and slugs and stuff like that. I would rather drink a light beer on a super hot day than a dark one, but would rather drink water than beer anyways.

Some may be 650ml, I assumed they were 750ml due to being similar in size to liquor bottles of that capacity.

I just bought a 1 pt 9.4 ounce (which does apparently equal to 750ml thereabouts) of Sierra Nevada/Russian River Brux last week for $16.  I was thinking about picking up a LambickX, but the same size was $22-$25 depending on the year.  There were a lot of beers in the seasonal/special-release section of Total Wine that were between $15-$20 for similar sized bottles.  Some were imported Belgians, but others were by US breweries like DFH, Goose Island, Rogue, Cigar City, etc.

There were a lot more in the $10-$15 category as well.

I get releasing larger bottles of special brews to share, but I'd appreciate it if more breweries would release them in the standard 12 ounce bottles for a lower price so that I could sample more of them for a lower cost.

Here's my experience: 50% of employees don't make $50,000 a year. Those that make more tend not to drink more beer than those that make less. If you're doing it for the money, do like my local microbrew and sell it for LESS than the mass produced stuff out of a tap in your own basement. That strategy has let them frachise locally without going a million into the red to flog bottles of IPA.

At least America has the most craft breweries in the world.  Dunno why its always the target for bad beer when top selling beers around the world:

Canada - Labatt Blue (piss), Coors Light (piss)
Mexico - Corona (even more piss-like)
Netherlands - Heineken  (skunk flavored piss)
England - Carling (piss), Fosters (Australian for piss)
Belgium - Jupiler (piss), Stella (piss)
Czech - Gambrinus (piss), Urquell  (piss)
Australia - VB (piss)
Denmark - Carlsberg (piss)
and so on..

piss flavored lightweight lagers are 90% of sales for every country in the world.

CSB (it's really lame):

A friend of mine went to the USA and was drinking some beer with friends. He drank Bud Light because he had to stay relatively sober.

His friend remarks: "Watching your figure mate?"
He replied: "No, just watching how much I drink."
Friend replies: "They're the same strength!"

Now he has the impression that Americans think the "light" part of light beer refers to the carbs, not the alcohol concentration.

I told him that the guy he was talking to was just an imbecile - but has anyone else run into this misconception? That "light beer" is like "light sour cream" sort of thing?
