I thought we agreed most of those beers should be avoided because they're crap?

2014-04-16 07:22:52 PM
Goddammit, Corona, Miller Lite and PBR are my brews when I'm slumming it.  Guess it's all Paulaner Hefeweizen from now on.

fusillade762: I thought we agreed most of those beers should be avoided because they're crap?

The only good beer is this obscure IPA that's brewed on the top of the Mt Everest by monks and brought down once every 36 years

Too long, didn't read, etc.  Was hoping for an easy list.  :(

tl;dr

Oh FFS. Fish bladder-isenglass- has been used for more than a century. Harmless unless you're vegan. Corn sugar is not HFCS. Carmel colour? Burnt sugars. Idiots.

I'll make you guys a deal.  I get all your coffee, you get all my beer.

mainsail: Harmless unless you're vegan

Harmless even if you're a vegan, too.

2014-04-16 07:34:51 PM
Looking at t he original list:

...Class 3 and 4 caramel coloring is made from ammonia, which is classified as a carcinogen.

Made from ammonia is not ammonia. And the whole farking beer is a carcinogen.

...This beer has been found to contain a genetically modified sweetener (GMO dextrose).

Dextrose is glucose and it's going to be glucose whether it was synthesized inside a GMO or a non-GMO.

And there are way more than 8 shiat beers that are made with GMO corn syrup.

Well, yes, except potential emotional damage.

3.       Calcium DiSodium EDTA: Not sure what this is or why anyone would add it to beer

It's a chelating agent to remove certain minerals. It basically removes that metallic flavor that you sometimes get.

I am currently drinking a small-batch craft seasonal. Your argument is invalid.

Pfffffftttt.....maybe it was good back in 2013 before it sold out. There's only one good beer left, but you probably haven't heard of it.

Summer Shandy is not small batch.

2014-04-16 07:41:24 PM
Yes, the retarded article TFA was debunking is retarded. Some of the best double IPA's on earth (e.g., Pliny the Elder) unabashedly use dextrose for a dryer finish, instead of a malt bomb that gets in the way of hop goodness

And gelatin works awesomely to clear up beer.

And this "OMG GMO" nonsense is so anti-science it is ridiculous. Never in the history of the world has anyone ever produced a peer-reviewed study that GMO foods are harmful. It is an article of faith that Eco-wakcos, who love to claim the high road on science, chant as they worship Gaea.

2014-04-16 07:42:30 PM
I don't have any reason to buy into the original article on its own, but I found the rebuttals lacking a good rebuttal component.

2014-04-16 07:42:42 PM
That was possibly the most thorough article I've ever seen, and used brewers from conglomerates, craft breweries and home brewers.  Impressive.

It is too bad nonsense spreads like wildfire, and debunkings of it don't.

The one that got me was MSG. If you understand how it used in cooking (it's what gives Doritos such a dense flavor) you really can't see how it could ever be used in beer.

2014-04-16 07:52:55 PM
FTFA:   At first glance it appears to be a Buzzfeed-style "listicle" complete with easy-to-read short paragraphs and big, colorful pictures. However, upon closer inspection it's quite clear that this article is pure hokum.

What?  "I thought it was bullshiat, but it turned out to be bullshiat"?

It's really just the monks' piss. The urea taste is how you know it's a good beer.

Does "listicle" make anyone else think of a gonad that's off plumb?

Nope, that one was picked up by InBev, your safest best is that one your friend made that you swear by but he only brewed it once and forgot the recipe.

Is no one concerned about beer's high oxidane content?

Here in Panama, a lot of people drink isenglass for, shall we say, "energy".  It's quite good if you get a Jamaican to make the drink.

In regards to the original article that got debunked, it came from Food Babe.  Does anyone take her crap seriously?

2014-04-16 08:13:20 PM
That was some thorough debunking. I had to crack another PBR half way through.

I do love that the initial comment of the article was an anti-GMO anti-beer rebuttal that gave as a resource the very list that the article rebutted.  Apparently Fark isn't the only place where no one bothers to RTFA.

So fish bladder, that's the air bladder? Do they even have a pee bladder?

It's the swim bladder. And yes, fish have urinary bladders.

I must stand corrected before I even had a chance to post.  I thought that fish "urinated" through through their skin or their gills.  Though it appears from my quick research that the urinary bladder excretes excess electrolytes rather than nitrogen waste.

Apparently no more so than the large amounts of DHMO found in all beers and ales.

I bought a bunch of individual beers the other day, including a can of this. I have to run back out this weekend and buy as much as I can find. It might be the perfect beer for a hot Florida day.

So the guy in the article raves about a conspiracy website (Genetic Literacy Project) created/staffed by non-scientists, after admitting he isn't a scientist, and another website which is dubiously (read: TOTALLY NOT AT ALL, NUH UH, NOT US. REALLY. HONEST) staffed by actual scientists all with a financial interest in GMO corn.

...

Um. Yeah.

But hey, the picture of the guy who can't grow a beard/stuck in the 90's holding his cute little snifter of beer was funny.

In short: we have one guy shouting about some "Food Babe" being ignorant of science, while he himself admits he is, while tossing around totally legit websites with absolutely no financial interest in GMO's.
