It makes sense to me. If you're a employee of a tech start up sold for a billion dollars to Facebook you're bigger than God. So you take what you want. Simple as that.

You get what you pay for. If Drew wanted to assign my username to someone willing to pay $5/month, what recourse would I have?

Yeah Drew did this with my Fark account years ago. Not for the name, which is nothing anyone else would want, but for the low account #. I was one of the first to make an account on here.

/he didn't steal it
//he sold it off for tits or squirrel piss or whatever he got paid in
///Also who gives a shiat?
////I was (like the article) not using it for a year or two by that point

Even from the date they first suspected there was an issue she still didn't even attempt to log in for several more months.

If you can go that long without noticing your password doesn't work anymore then why do you need a recognizable username.

So now Instagram has returned the username, to someone who doesn't even attempt to access their account more than a couple of times a year. Seems like a waste.

I think Instagram is something that teenage girls use to make poor decisions.

I'm sure that's something you could plan for.

I'd demand a refund.

I wish there was a service you could sign up for that would auto register your username for you on like, everything.

Really? People are pretending to not know what Instagram is now? In case you're serious: Let me Google that for you.

~200 million active users around the world, sharing ~60 million photos a day. Some accounts have large followings, and a short/simple username is very valuable in building and maintaining those followings. The ways in which these social media companies manage ownership of these usernames is important in ensuring legitimacy. It's not that hard to understand.

Remember, if the service is free, you're not the customer, you're the product they're selling.

In other news, marketing website gets trolled by AWs for an account that will now sell for thousands of dollars. Marketing is one thing, bombing every avenue online with ads is getting really old. But people like parakeets like shiny things and simply can't turn away.

This is a free service she want not even using. The customer is always right crap has gone way to far. She could have gotten @namelastname, or something similar, instead they upped the AWing to an extremely high level. Pure BS on a mostly BS website.

/60 million pictures?
//mosty of food I bet.
///mmmmm..second dunch.

Any company aiming to get popular should require usernames to be at least log(number of people and companies in the universe) characters long, where the base of the log is related to the amount of information in the typical username character. Non-computery English is around 1 bit per character. I'm sure wikipedia will explain ad nauseum some debate over whether it's 1.3900013 or 1.3900761.
